Surah Ar-Ra'd (The Thunder) — سورة الرعد - **Verse:** 3 / 43 · **Juz:** 13 · **Mushaf page:** 248 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ar-rad/verse-3 ## Arabic وَهُوَ الَّذ۪ي مَدَّ الْاَرْضَ وَجَعَلَ ف۪يهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَاَنْهَاراًۜ وَمِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ جَعَلَ ف۪يهَا زَوْجَيْنِ اثْنَيْنِ يُغْشِي الَّيْلَ النَّهَارَۜ اِنَّ ف۪ي ذٰلِكَ لَاٰيَاتٍ لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ ## Transcription Wahuwa allathee madda al-ardawajaAAala feeha rawasiya waanharan waminkulli aththamarati jaAAala feeha zawjayniithnayni yughshee allayla annahara inna fee thalikalaayatin liqawmin yatafakkaroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley It is He who stretched out the earth and placed firmly embedded mountains and rivers in it and made two types of every kind of fruit. He covers over day with night. There are Signs in that for people who reflect. ### Progressive Muslims And He is the One who stretched-out the land, and made in it stabilizers and rivers, and from every fruit He made a pair of two; the night covers the day. In that are signs for a people who will think. ### Shabbir Ahmed And He it is Who has spread the earth wide and placed therein firm mountains, and flowing streams. And (He) created thereon couples of every kind of plants (and their fruit). (Plants have male and female flowers, and some trees like the date-palm are unisexual, male and female). He causes the night to cover the day. And from the different kinds of fruits, He made them into pairs - males and females. The night overtakes the day. These are solid proofs for people who think. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira It is He who stretched the earth and placed upon it stabilisers and rivers; and made two of a pair of every fruit; (and) He covers up the day with the night. In these are signs for those who reflect. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And it is He who spread the earth and placed therein firmly set mountains and rivers; and from all of the fruits He made therein two mates; He causes the night to cover the day. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. ### Muhammad Asad And it is He who has spread the earth wide and placed on it firm mountains and running waters, and created thereon two sexes of every [kind of] plant; [and it is He who] causes the night to cover the day. Verily, in all this there are messages indeed for people who think! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And He it is Who spread out the earth and placed therein firm hills and flowing streams, and of all fruits He placed therein two spouses (male and female). He covereth the night with the day. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary He it is Who has stretched out the earth and has placed in it firm mountains and has caused the rivers to flow. He has made every fruit in pairs, two and two, and He it is Who causes the night to cover the day.[1] Surely there are signs in these for those who reflect. _Footnotes_ - [1] After citing some heavenly signs in support of the doctrines of Tauhid and the Hereafter, a few signs are being cited from the earth for the same purpose. Briefly the following are the arguments for Tauhid, Resurrection and Accountability. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab He is it Who extended the earth spreading it out and therein He placed mountains in a certain setting, fixed as with an anchor, and rivers with copious streams of fresh water flowing in channels, and of all and each fruit did He produce a pair, male and female -with stamens and pistils, uni and bisexual. He enshrouded the day with the veil of the night. Indeed here, there and everywhere are signs with prodigies emblematic of Omnipotence and Authority sensed by those who consider matters and ponder their cause. ### Bijan Moeinian God is the One Who spread out the earth and placed on it mountains and rivers. Then He introduced male and female species. He is the One Who rolls the nights over the days and all these phenomena are subject of contemplation for those who bother to think. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And it is He Who spread out the earth, and placed therein firm mountains and rivers and of every kind of fruits He made Zawjain Ithnaîn (two in pairs - may mean two kinds or it may mean: of two varieties, e.g. black and white, sweet and sour, small and big). He brings the night as a cover over the day. Verily, in these things, there are Ayât (proofs, evidence, lessons, signs, etc.) for people who reflect. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And it is He who spread out the earth, and set thereon mountains standing firm and (flowing) rivers: and fruit of every kind He made in pairs, two and two: He draweth the night as a veil o'er the Day. Behold, verily in these things there are signs for those who consider! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran And He is the One Who spread out the earth and placed firm mountains and rivers upon it, and created fruits of every kind in pairs.[1] He covers the day with night. Aziz Allah it is who has raised the heavens without supporting columns that you can see; then He established Himself firmly on the throne (of authority and control), and subjected the sun and the moon (to His Law or service). Each one runs on its course for an appointed time. He regulates affairs, (or details the signs or revelations), that per chance (or possibly) you may believe with certainty in the meeting with your Lord. ### Mahmoud Ghali And He is (The One) Who extended the earth and made therein anchorages and rivers; and of all products He made therein two pairs, enveloping the daytime with the night. Muhakkak ki bunlarda; düşünen bir kavim için ayetler vardır. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Yeryüzünü yayıp genişleten ve onun üzerine yerinden oynatılmaz dağlar yerleştirip vadilerinden nehirler akıtan ve orada her tür bitkiden iki cins yaratan ve gündüzü geceyle örtüp bürüyen O'dur. Kur'an'da dağ anlamında başka kelimeler de vardır: İnsanların çevrelerinde gördükleri ağaç, nehir gibi coğrafi unsurlardan biri anlamında "cebel (جبل)", yüceliğine vurguyla "tavd (طود)", sağlamlığı ve şekline vurguyla "veted (وتد)", sabitliğine vurguyla "rasiye (راسية)" kelimeleri kullanılmaktadır. "Revasi (رواسي)" kelimesi 9 kez geçmektedir. Kelime [Nahl 16/15,](https://quran.so/16/15) [Enbiya 21/31,](https://quran.so/21/31) [Lokman 31/10.](https://quran.so/31/10) ayetlerinde "gidip gelme, sallanma, sarsılma" anlamlarına gelen "meyd (ميد)" kökünden bir fiille birlikte kullanılmıştır. Bu ayetlerde insanları sarsacak olan, yeryüzüdür. Dağların varlığı insanları bu sarsıntı esnasında korumak, daha güvenli bir yerleşim yeri oluşturmak içindir. Ayetlerde dağların yeri sabitlemesinden bahsedilmemekte, dağların kendilerinin yeryüzündeki sabitliğine vurgu yapılmaktadır. Nitekim toprak, kum ve alüvyonlu kıyı kesimlerin depremlerde en uzun süreli sarsıntı yaratan, sarsıntının şiddetinin en büyük, hızının en fazla hissedildiği bölgeler olduğu, dağlık ve kayalık alanlarda ise bu sarsıntıların çok daha kısa ve yavaş gerçekleştiği yerbilimleri tarafından da tespit edilmiş gerçeklerdir.
