### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary

All that is in the heavens and the earth prostrates itself, whether willingly or by force,[1] before Allah; and so do their shadows in the morning and in the evening.[2]

_Footnotes_
- [1] "And to Allah falls in prostration whoever is in the heavens and the earth" in the same sense that every creation of His has to obey and submit to His Physical law in every detail. The only difference between the submission of a believer and an unbeliever is that the former submits to it with a willing heart while the latter is forced to do so against his will, for it is absolutely beyond his power to oppose it.
- [2] "Their shadows" in the sense that they fall to the west in the morning and to the cast in the evening and so on. This shows that they, too, have to submit to some law.

### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab

To Allah Who controls the fate of all, do all beings, the material and the immaterial, in the heavens and on earth submit to His government and to His supreme controlling and influencing power willingly or unwillingly. So do the shadows they cast on the ground or on a surface by the intercepting sun rays fore and afternoon, and other luminary in the hull of the eve.

### Bijan Moeinian

To God submit whatever is in existence in the heavens and the earth. They do so willingly or unwillingly (A disbeliever’s heart, e.g., has to submit itself to what God has ordered it to do and its owner cannot change it to his will.) Have you not seen that the shadow of all things bow down (willingly or unwillingly) before the Lord in the morning and the evening?

### Al-Hilali & Khan

And unto Allâh (Alone) falls in prostration whoever is in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, and so do their shadows in the mornings and in the afternoons.

### E. Henry Palmer

### Hamid S. Aziz

True prayer is only a call to Allah; and those who call on others besides Him shall not be answered at all, except as one who stretches out his hand to the water that it may reach his mouth, but it reaches it not! The call of the disbelievers is futile.

### Mahmoud Ghali

### George Sale
