Surah An-Nur (The Light) — سورة النور - **Verse:** 43 / 64 · **Juz:** 18 · **Mushaf page:** 354 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nur/verse-43 ## Arabic اَلَمْ تَرَ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ يُزْج۪ي سَحَاباً ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيْنَهُ ثُمَّ يَجْعَلُهُ رُكَاماً فَتَرَى الْوَدْقَ يَخْرُجُ مِنْ خِلَالِه۪ۚ وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ مِنْ جِبَالٍ ف۪يهَا مِنْ بَرَدٍ فَيُص۪يبُ بِه۪ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُ وَيَصْرِفُهُ عَنْ مَنْ يَشَٓاءُۜ يَكَادُ سَنَا بَرْقِه۪ يَذْهَبُ بِالْاَبْصَارِۜ ## Transcription Alam tara anna Allaha yuzjee sahabanthumma yu-allifu baynahu thumma yajAAaluhu rukaman fataraalwadqa yakhruju min khilalihi wayunazzilu mina assama-imin jibalin feeha min baradin fayuseebu bihiman yashao wayasrifuhu AAan man yashao yakadusana barqihi yathhabu bil-absar ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Do you not see that Allah propels the clouds then makes them coalesce then heaps them up, and then you see the rain come pouring out of the middle of them? And He sends down mountains from the sky with hail inside them, striking with it anyone He wills and averting it from anyone He wills. The brightness of His lightning almost blinds the sight. ### Progressive Muslims Do you not see that God drives the clouds, then He gathers them together, then He piles them upon each other, then you see the soft rain coming out of them And He sends down hail from the sky from the mountains to afflict whomever He wills, and He diverts it from whomever He wills, the brightness of the snow almost blinds the eyes. ### Shabbir Ahmed Have you not seen how Allah drives the clouds, then gathers them, then makes them layers, and then you see the rain coming forth from them? He sends down, from the heights, hail and loads of snow to cover some ground and leave some uncovered, according to His Laws. The flashes of lightning and the brightness of the snow dazzle the sight, all but snatching it away. The flashing of His lightning all but snatcheth away the sight. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Do you not see[1] that it is Allah Who gently drives the clouds, then He joins them together and then turns them into a thick mass and thereafter you see rain-drops fall down from its midst? And then He sends down hail from the heaven - thanks to the mountains[2] - and causes it to smite whom He wills and averts it from whom He wills. The flash of His lightning almost takes away the sight. _Footnotes_ - [1] As has been explained above, Allah is the Light of the whole universe, but His Light can be perceived and comprehended by the righteous believers only. All other people grope about in the dark like the blind in spite of the all-pervading, all-embracing Light. Here a few of the countless signs which guide to the Light are being mentioned by way of example. If a person whose eyes of the heart are open, sees them, he can perceive Allah working everywhere around him at all times. But those who are blind of the heart, and can only see with the head’s eyes, can see Biology and Zoology and other sciences working in the world, but they fail to perceive and recognize Allah’s signs anywhere working in the world. - [2] This may mean frozen clouds which have been called mountains in the heavens metaphorically. It may also mean the mountains of the earth which stand high in the heavens and whose snow-capped peaks cause condensation in the clouds which results in hailstorms. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Do you not see that Allah directs the course of the clouds as they form and by the air in motion make them join together in one body, then He condenses them into a dense mass wherefore you see rain drops issue from their midst. And He causes the clouds to heap upon each other like towers of mountains* -as clearly seen from an airoplane- Charged with hail or frozen raindrops, He makes them fall in showers to assail whom He will and drives them away from whom He will. The brightness of lightning emitted between the groups of clouds or between the clouds and the ground almost snatches away or blinds the sight. ### Bijan Moeinian Do you not see that God raises the clouds, then unites them together, then concentrates them and let them shower their rain? He is the One Who sends the hail from the mountains of clouds, hurting whoever He wants and sparing whoever He wants. Look at the lightning sent from the same clouds which almost blinds the eyes. ### Al-Hilali & Khan See you not that Allâh drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, then makes them into a heap of layers, and you see the rain comes forth from between them; and He sends down from the sky hail (like) mountains, (or there are in the heaven mountains of hail from where He sends down hail), and strikes therewith whom He wills, and averts it from whom He wills.
