Surah An-Nur (The Light) — سورة النور - **Verse:** 22 / 64 · **Juz:** 18 · **Mushaf page:** 351 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nur/verse-22 ## Arabic وَلَا يَأْتَلِ اُو۬لُوا الْفَضْلِ مِنْكُمْ وَالسَّعَةِ اَنْ يُؤْتُٓوا اُو۬لِي الْقُرْبٰى وَالْمَسَاك۪ينَ وَالْمُهَاجِر۪ينَ ف۪ي سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۖ وَلْيَعْفُوا وَلْيَصْفَحُواۜ اَلَا تُحِبُّونَ اَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْۜ وَاللّٰهُ غَفُورٌ رَح۪يمٌ ## Transcription Wala ya/tali oloo alfadliminkum wassaAAati an yu/too olee alqurba walmasakeenawalmuhajireena fee sabeeli AllahiwalyaAAfoo walyasfahoo ala tuhibboonaan yaghfira Allahu lakum wallahu ghafoorunraheem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those of you possessing affluence and ample wealth should not make oaths that they will not give to their relatives and the very poor and those who have made hijra in the way of Allah. They should rather pardon and overlook. Would you not love Allah to forgive you? Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful. ### Progressive Muslims And let not those amongst you who have been blessed with abundance refuse to give to the relatives, and the needy, and those who have immigrated in the cause of God. Let them pardon and forgive. Would you not like God to forgive you And God is Forgiving, Merciful. ### Shabbir Ahmed (Development of the personality takes place by respecting the Divine Moral Values and helping people with your wealth and person (2:232), (4:49), (9:103), (24:21), (24:30), (53:32), (91:9-10), (92:18)). Let not those among you who have been blessed with resources and ease of life ever stay behind in spending on: Their families, Relatives, Those who have lost their jobs, Whose running businesses have stalled, Whose hard earned income is insufficient to meet their needs, and Those who have forsaken the domain of evil or persecution in the Cause of Allah. Let them pardon and overlook the imperfections of the needy. Listen! Do you not love that Allah should forgive you, absolving your imperfections? [For,] do you not desire that God should forgive you your sins, seeing that God is much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace? ### Marmaduke Pickthall And let not those who possess dignity and ease among you swear not to give to the near of kin and to the needy, and to fugitives for the cause of Allah. Let them forgive and show indulgence. Yearn ye not that Allah may forgive you? Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Let those among you who are bounteous and resourceful not swear to withhold giving to the kindred, to the needy, and to those who have forsaken their homes in the cause of Allah; rather, let them forgive and forbear. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Allah is Ever Forgiving, Most Merciful.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] Aishah has stated that after the revelation of(verses 11- 21 )absolving her from the accusation, Abu Bakr swore that he would no longer support Mistah bin Uthatha. This was because the man had shown absolutely no regard for the relationship, nor for the favors that Abu Bakr had all along been showing him and his family. At this (verse 22 )was revealed and Abu Bakr, on hearing it, immediately said: By God, we do want that Allah should forgive us. Consequently he again started to help Mistah and in a more liberal manner than before. According to Abdullah bin Abbas, some other companions, besides Abu Bakr, also had sworn that they would discontinue helping those who had taken an active part in the slander. After the revelation of this verse, all of them revoked their oaths and the ill-will that had been created by the mischief was gone. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And those of you in whom Allah's grace abounds must not resolve against helping the needy among their kindred and those in want as well as those who emigrated to where they could best serve Allah's cause. It is to their advantage to accord them forgiveness and not to entertain them with thoughts of ill-will. Would you not like that Allah forgives your iniquities, and Allah is Ghafurun and Rahimun. ### Bijan Moeinian Those among you whom God has blessed with wealth should not say that they will never again help their relatives, poor people, and those who have immigrated for the cause of the Lord (because of the disappointing experiences that they have had with them. ) They should forgive (if they have said or done something wrong) and treat them with tolerance. Do you not wish to be pardoned by God? Yes, indeed the Lord is Forgiving and Merciful. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And let not those among you who are blessed with graces and wealth swear not to give (any sort of help) to their kinsmen, Al-Masâkîn (the poor), and those who left their homes for Allâh’s Cause. Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allâh should forgive you? And Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah's cause: let them forgive and overlook, do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Follow not the footsteps of Satan, for he who follows the footsteps of Satan, verily, he bids you filth (the shameful) and wrong. Had it not been for the grace of Allah upon you and His mercy unto you, not one of you would have grown pure; but Allah causes whom He will to grow (or become purified), for Allah is Hearer, Knower. ### Mahmoud Ghali And let not the ones endowed with the Grace (of Allah) and affluence swear off bringing (charity) to near of kin (Literally: endowed with kinship) and the indigent and to the ones emigrating in the way of Allah; and let them be clement and let them pardon.
