Surah An-Nisa (The Women) — سورة النساء - **Verse:** 5 / 176 · **Juz:** 4 · **Mushaf page:** 76 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nisa/verse-5 ## Arabic وَلَا تُؤْتُوا السُّفَـهَٓاءَ اَمْوَالَكُمُ الَّت۪ي جَعَلَ اللّٰهُ لَكُمْ قِيَاماً وَارْزُقُوهُمْ ف۪يهَا وَاكْسُوهُمْ وَقُولُوا لَهُمْ قَوْلاً مَعْرُوفاً ## Transcription Wala tu/too assufahaaamwalakumu allatee jaAAala Allahu lakum qiyamanwarzuqoohum feeha waksoohum waqooloo lahumqawlan maAAroofa ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Do not hand over to the simple-minded any property of theirs for which Allah has made you responsible, but provide for them and clothe them out of it, and speak to them correctly and courteously. ### Progressive Muslims And do not give the immature ones their money that God has entrusted to you, and spend on them from it and clothe them, and speak to them in goodness. ### Shabbir Ahmed Do not let the immature orphans manage their property that Allah has entrusted with you as guardians, until they are able to make sound financial decisions. You shall provide for them therefrom, and clothe them, and treat them kindly. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Do not entrust (their) property God has given you to maintain (On trust), to those who are immature; but feed them and clothe them from it, and speak to them with kindness. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And do not give the weak-minded your property, which Allah has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness. ### Muhammad Asad And do not entrust to those who are weak of judgment the possessions which God has placed in your charge for [their] support; but let them have their sustenance therefrom, and clothe them, and speak unto them in a kindly way. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Give not unto the foolish (what is in) your (keeping of their) wealth, which Allah hath given you to maintain; but feed and clothe them from it, and speak kindly unto them. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Do not entrust your properties - which Allah hasmade a means of support for you - to the weak of understanding, but maintain and clothe them out of it, and say to them a kind word of admonition.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This verse covers a very wide spectrum of meaning. It emphasizes to the community of believers that wealth is one of the main supports of human life. It should not be left, therefore, at the mercy of those who are incompetent to handle it properly. By misusing wealth such people might destroy the bases of social and economic life and wreck the moral foundations of human society. The right to private property is not so absolute; if a person is incapable of exercising this right properly and if he might cause grave social harm by wanton expenditure then his right may be forfeited. The necessities of such a person's life should always be provided for. But so far as the exercise of his proprietary rights is concerned, due restrictions should be placed on it in order that the owner is restrained from spending his resources in brazen disregard of the dictates of morality, collective welfare and economic interests of the community. According to the directive embodied in the verse, anyone who entrusts his property to someone else's care should satisfy himself that the latter is capable of making good use of it. At a higher level, it is incumbent upon an Islamic state to take over the management of the properties of those who either lack totally the capacity for good management or cause social damage by misuse. In such cases the state is responsible for providing these people with their livelihood. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And when time is ripe to hand over the property, with which you are entrusted, to the orphans who now come of age, make sure they are not characterized by a disordered mind; this property is in fact the trust of the community but held in trust by a particular individual. If they are incapable, then exempt them from this responsibility but gently and with kindness. And the property shall serve as the source from which you sustain them and clothe them. And let your dissertation with them be a sweet discourse. ### Bijan Moeinian Do not give immature (and crazy) orphans their properties which God has entrusted with you as guardians; feed and cloth them from it and treat them kindly to please your Lord. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And give not unto the foolish your property which Allâh has made a means of support for you,[1] but feed and clothe them therewith, and speak to them words of kindness and justice. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali To those weak of understanding Make not over your property, which Allah hath made a means of support for you, but feed and clothe them therewith, and speak to them words of kindness and justice. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Do not entrust the incapable ˹among your dependants˺ with your wealth which Allah has made a means of support for you—but feed and clothe them from it, and speak to them kindly. ### Taqi Usmani Do not give the feeble-minded your property that Allah has made a means of support for you, and do feed them from it, and clothe them, and speak to them in fair words. ### Abdul Haleem Do not entrust your property to the feeble-minded.
