Surah An-Nisa (The Women) — سورة النساء - **Verse:** 37 / 176 · **Juz:** 5 · **Mushaf page:** 83 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nisa/verse-37 ## Arabic اَلَّذ۪ينَ يَبْخَلُونَ وَيَأْمُرُونَ النَّاسَ بِالْبُخْلِ وَيَكْتُمُونَ مَٓا اٰتٰيهُمُ اللّٰهُ مِنْ فَضْلِه۪ۜ وَاَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِر۪ينَ عَذَاباً مُه۪يناًۚ ## Transcription Allatheena yabkhaloona waya/muroona annasabilbukhli wayaktumoona ma atahumuAllahu min fadlihi waaAAtadna lilkafireenaAAathaban muheena ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley As for those who are tight-fisted and direct others to be tight-fisted, and hide the bounty Allah has given them, We have prepared a humiliating punishment for those who are kafir, ### Progressive Muslims Those who are stingy and order the people to stinginess, and they conceal what God has given them from His bounty. We have prepared for these disbelievers a painful retribution. ### Shabbir Ahmed Those who are stingy and advise others to be stingy, and hide what Allah has given them of His Bounty, for such ungrateful disbelievers We have prepared a humiliating punishment. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Those who are miserly and enjoin miserliness upon men, and conceal what God has bestowed upon them of His bounty; and We have prepared for the false claimers of guidance a humiliating punishment; ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Those who are stingy and order the people to stinginess, and they conceal what God has given them from His bounty. And We have prepared for the rejecters a humiliating retribution. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament The ones who are stingy, exhort the people to be stingy, and conceal what GOD has bestowed upon them from His bounties. We have prepared for the disbelievers a shameful retribution. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Who are miserly and bid others to be so, and hide what God has given them in His largesse. We have prepared for unbelievers a shameful punishment. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Who are stingy and enjoin upon [other] people stinginess and conceal what Allah has given them of His bounty - and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment - ### Muhammad Asad [nor] those who are niggardly, and bid others to be niggardly, and conceal whatever God has bestowed upon them out of His bounty; and so We have readied shameful suffering for all who thus deny the truth. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Who hoard their wealth and enjoin avarice on others, and hide that which Allah hath bestowed upon them of His bounty. For disbelievers We prepare a shameful doom; ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary who are niggardly and bid others to be niggardly and conceal the bounty which Allah has bestowed upon them.[1] We have kept in readiness a humiliating chastisement for such deniers (of Allah's bounty). _Footnotes_ - [1] Concealing God's bounty is to live, as if God had not bestowed that bounty. If anyone has considerable wealth and yet lives at a standard strikingly lower than that warranted by his income, if he shuns spending on himself and his family, and also on helping other creatures of God, and avoids providing financial support to any philanthropic cause, then he creates the false impression of being in a state of financial stringency. This is sheer ingratitude to God. The Prophet (peace be on him) is reported, according to a tradition, as saying: 'If God confers a bounty on somebody, He would like to see that benefaction displayed.' (Ibn Kathir, vol. 4, p. 486 - Ed.) This means that a person's day-to-day life, his eating and drinking, his dress and his abode and his spending on others, all these should reflect God's bounty. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Those who are miserly, unwilling to give in benevolence or spend in divine service and induce others to be mean and parsimonious, and hide Allah's grace in whom it abounds, have in effect permitted the forbidden and commended it to others. We have prepared for those who bid defiance to Allah and rise defiant against His ordinances a condign and humiliating punishment. ### Bijan Moeinian Indeed God has an awful punishment for such people who try to cover the truth. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Those who are miserly and enjoin miserliness on other men and hide what Allâh has bestowed upon them of His Bounties. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a disgraceful torment.[1] ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali (Nor) those who are niggardly or enjoin niggardliness on others, or hide the bounties which Allah hath bestowed on them; for We have prepared, for those who resist Faith, a punishment that steeps them in contempt;- ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran those who are stingy, promote stinginess among people, and withhold Allah’s bounties. We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment. ### Taqi Usmani -those who are miserly and bid people to be miserly, and conceal what Allah has given them of His grace - and We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment, ### Abdul Haleem who are miserly and order other people to be the same, hiding the bounty God has given them. We have prepared a humiliating torment for such ungrateful people. ### Arthur John Arberry such as are niggardly, and bid other men to be niggardly, and themselves conceal the bounty that God has given them. We have prepared for the unbelievers a humbling chastisement, ### E. Henry Palmer who are miserly and bid men be miserly too, and who hide what God has given them of His grace;- but we have prepared for the misbelievers shameful woe. ### Hamid S. Aziz Who hoard their wealth and bid men to (or promote) avarice, and who hide what Allah has given them of His Bounty. We have prepared for the disbelievers a shameful woe. ### Mahmoud Ghali The ones who are miserly and bid (other) men (Literally: command mankind) to be miserly, and (who) keep back whatever Allah has brought them of His Grace.
