Surah An-Nisa (The Women) — سورة النساء - **Verse:** 2 / 176 · **Juz:** 4 · **Mushaf page:** 76 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nisa/verse-2 ## Arabic وَاٰتُوا الْيَتَامٰٓى اَمْوَالَهُمْ وَلَا تَتَبَدَّلُوا الْخَب۪يثَ بِالطَّيِّبِۖ وَلَا تَأْكُلُٓوا اَمْوَالَهُمْ اِلٰٓى اَمْوَالِكُمْۜ اِنَّهُ كَانَ حُوباً كَب۪يراً ## Transcription Waatoo alyatama amwalahumwala tatabaddaloo alkhabeetha bittayyibiwala ta/kuloo amwalahum ila amwalikuminnahu kana hooban kabeera ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Give orphans their property, and do not substitute bad things for good. Do not assimilate their property into your own. Doing that is a serious crime. ### Progressive Muslims And give the orphans their money, and do not replace the good with the bad, and do not consume their money to your money; for truly it is a great sin! ### Shabbir Ahmed Orphans in the community are like your family members (33:5). Be vigilant in guarding their rights (4:127). Protect their property honestly, and give it to them when they have come of age. This would be a gross injustice. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Give to the orphans their possessions, and do not replace things of your own which are bad with things which are good among theirs, and do not intermix their goods with your own and make use of them, for this is a grievous crime. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin. ### Muhammad Asad Hence, render unto the orphans their posses­sions, and do not substitute bad things [of your own] for the good things [that belong to them], and do not consume their possessions together with your own: this, verily, is a great crime. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Give unto orphans their wealth. Exchange not the good for the bad (in your management thereof) nor absorb their wealth into your own wealth. Lo! that would be a great sin. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Give orphans their property,[1] and do not exchange the bad for the good,[2] and do not eat up their property by mixing it with your own. This surely is a mighty sin. _Footnotes_ - [1] God directs the guardians of the orphans to spend out of the latter's property while they are still minors, and to restore it to them when they attain majority. - [2] The order not to exchange the bad for the good has several meanings. On the one hand, it means that one should not replace honest by dishonest living. At the same time, it also means that one should not exchange one's own property which is of little value for the more valuable property of the orphans. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And restore to the orphans their property and do not exchange the worthless which you might own for the good and valuable which they own, nor incorporate their property with your property; this has always been regarded by Allah as a great sin. ### Bijan Moeinian Hand over to the orphans their inheritance. Do not exchange your lower quality commodities with their belongings and do not devour their properties; this is certainly a great crime. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And give unto orphans their property and do not exchange (your) bad things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance (by adding it) to your substance. Surely, this is a great sin.[1] ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with your own.
