Surah An-Nisa (The Women) — سورة النساء - **Verse:** 153 / 176 · **Juz:** 6 · **Mushaf page:** 101 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nisa/verse-153 ## Arabic يَسْـَٔلُكَ اَهْلُ الْكِتَابِ اَنْ تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ كِتَاباً مِنَ السَّمَٓاءِ فَقَدْ سَاَلُوا مُوسٰٓى اَكْبَرَ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ فَقَالُٓوا اَرِنَا اللّٰهَ جَهْرَةً فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الصَّاعِقَةُ بِظُلْمِهِمْۚ ثُمَّ اتَّخَذُوا الْعِجْلَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَٓاءَتْهُمُ الْبَيِّنَاتُ فَعَفَوْنَا عَنْ ذٰلِكَۚ وَاٰتَيْنَا مُوسٰى سُلْطَاناً مُب۪يناً ## Transcription Yas-aluka ahlu alkitabi an tunazzilaAAalayhim kitaban mina assama-i faqadsaaloo moosa akbara min thalika faqaloo arinaAllaha jahratan faakhathat-humu assaAAiqatubithulmihim thumma ittakhathoo alAAijla minbaAAdi ma jaat-humu albayyinatu faAAafawnaAAan thalika waatayna moosa sultananmubeena ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley The People of the Book will ask you to bring down a Book from heaven to them. They asked Musa for even more than that. They said, ‘Let us see Allah with our own eyes.’ So the lightning-bolt struck them down for their wrongdoing. Then they adopted the Calf after the Clear Signs had come to them, but We pardoned them for that and gave Musa clear authority. ### Progressive Muslims The people of the Scripture ask you to bring down to them a scripture from the heavens. They had asked Moses for even more than that, for they said: "Let us see God plainly!", so the lightning bolt took them for their wickedness. Then they took the calf after the clarity had come to them, and We pardoned them for this; We gave Moses a clear authority. ### Shabbir Ahmed (O Prophet) People of the Scripture ask you to bring a published book from the sky. They made a greater demand to Moses when they said, "Show us Allah face to face". And their psyche was such that when a bolt of lightning struck around them, they fell in fear (2:55). They had displaced the true belief with falsehood. After that, they chose the calf for worship although they had seen the Manifest Truth. Yet, We pardoned them and gave Moses evident authority (as a blessing for their guidance). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation The doctors of the Law ask thee to bring down upon them a Writ from the sky; and they asked of Moses greater than that; they said: “Show thou us God openly”; so the thunderbolt seized them for their injustice. But of Moses they had asked a bigger thing, and demanded: "Show us God face to face." They were struck by lightning then as punishment for their wickedness. Even then they made the calf, when clear signs had reached them. And an even greater thing than this did they demand of Moses when they said, "Make us see God face to face" - whereupon the thunderbolt of punishment overtook them for this their wickedness. After that, they took to worshipping the [golden] calf - and this after all evidence of the truth had come unto them! None the less, We effaced this [sin of theirs], and vouchsafed unto Moses a clear proof [of the truth], ### Marmaduke Pickthall The people of the Scripture ask of thee that thou shouldst cause an (actual) Book to descend upon them from heaven. They asked a greater thing of Moses aforetime, for they said: Show us Allah plainly. The storm of lightning seized them for their wickedness. Then (even) after that) they chose the calf (for worship) after clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) had come unto them. And We forgave them that! And We bestowed on Moses evident authority. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The People of the Book now ask of you to have a Book come down on them from heaven;[1] indeed they asked of Moses even greater things than this, for they said: 'Make us see Allah with our own eyes' - whereupon the thunderbolt suddenly smote them for their wickedness.[2] Then they took to worshipping the calf after clear signs had come to them.[3] Still, We forgave them, and conferred a manifest commandment upon Moses, _Footnotes_ - [1] One of the odd demands which the Jews of Madina made to the Prophet (peace be on him) was that if he wanted them to accept his claim to prophethood he should have them either witness a book descending from the heavens or that each one of them should receive a writ from on high, confirming Muhammad's prophethood and the absolute necessity of believing in him. - [2] The purpose here is not to describe the details of any particular event, but merely to mention, in brief, the crimes of the Jews. Hence passing references are made to the main incidents in the national history of the Jews. The particular event referred to has been mentioned earlier in Surah al-Baqarah. (See Towards Understanding the Qur'an, vol. I, (Surah 2: 55; also n. 71.) - [3] 'Clear signs' refer here to the signs which people had constantly witnessed from the time of Moses' appointment to his prophetic office, to the drowning of Pharaoh and the deliverance of the Israelites out of Egypt. It is clear that He Who had secured the deliverance of the Israelites from the clutches of the powerful Egyptian empire was not the calf, but God, the Lord of the Universe. One is simply staggered at the overpowering predisposition of the Jews to error, as evidenced by the fact that at that very juncture in their history when they had experienced the most illustrious signs of God's power and grace they bowed down before the image of the calf, rather than before God, their Benefactor. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And insolently do Ahl al-Kitab (the Jews) ask you O Muhammad for a Book that you would cause to descend upon them from heaven! But greater was their irreverence to Mussa (Moses) whom they asked to show them Allah personally so that they perceive Him by sight. There and then did heaven thunder against them and the fearful echoes thundered in their ears in consequence of their blasphemy against Allah. And worse was the reverence and veneration they paid to the calf which they worshipped and adored besides Allah. And this odd disposition, strangely ran in their heads after they had received enough signs to guide them out of want of spiritual and intellectual sight into illumination and enlightenment Yet We pardoned them and remitted the penalty of their serious offence and We conferred on Mussa delegated power and made him stand manifest of authority. ### Bijan Moeinian The people of the scripture will ask you to perform a miracle and ask God to send down a divine book from the heaven [as a proof to your claim for prophet hood. ] Never mind them as these are the same people who asked Moses for even greater miracle. They said: "Show us God in person." They [naturally could not stand the presence of the Lord and] were caught by thunder and lightening for their audacity. In spite of all that, they turned into cow worshipping! [This proves that no miracle can change their behavior/ attitude.] Even so I forgave them and blessed Moses with the most amazing miracles. ### Al-Hilali & Khan The people of the Scripture (Jews) ask you to cause a book to descend upon them from heaven. Indeed they asked Mûsâ (Moses) for even greater than that, when they said: "Show us Allâh in public," but they were struck with thunderclap and lightning for their wickedness. Then they worshipped the calf even after clear proofs, evidence, and signs had come to them. (Even) so We forgave them. And We gave Mûsâ (Moses) a clear proof of authority. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The people of the Book ask thee to cause a book to descend to them from heaven: Indeed they asked Moses for an even greater (miracle), for they said: "Show us Allah in public," but they were dazed for their presumption, with thunder and lightning. Yet they worshipped the calf even after clear signs had come to them; even so we forgave them; and gave Moses manifest proofs of authority. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The People of the Book demand that you ˹O Prophet˺ bring down for them a revelation in writing from heaven.[1] They demanded what is even greater than this from Moses, saying, "Make Allah visible to us!" So a thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf for worship after receiving clear signs. Still We forgave them for that ˹after their repentance˺ and gave Moses compelling proof. ### Taqi Usmani The People of the Book ask you to bring down upon them a Book from the heavens, (which is not strange,) as they had asked Mūsā something greater than that when they said, "Make us see Allah openly." So, the thunderbolt took them for the wrong they did. Later, they took to themselves the calf, even after the clear signs had come to them. Then, We forgave them, and gave Mūsā an open authority. ### Abdul Haleem The People of the Book demand that you [Prophet] make a book physically come down to them from heaven, but they demanded even more than that of Moses when they said, ‘Show us God face to face,’ and were struck by the thunderbolt for their presumption. Even after clear revelations had come down to them, they took the calf as an object of worship, yet We pardoned this, and gave Moses clear authority; ### Arthur John Arberry The People of the Book will ask thee to bring down upon them a Book from heaven; and they asked Moses for greater than that, for they said, 'Show us God openly. Thereafter they took to themselves the Calf, even after the supreme evidences came to them, yet We were clement (towards them) for that, and We brought M?s'a an evident all-binding authority. ### George Sale They who have received the scriptures will demand of thee, that thou cause a book to descend unto them from heaven: They formerly asked of Moses a greater thing than this; for they said, shew us God visibly. Wherefore a storm of fire from heaven destroyed them, because of their iniquity. They made a (more wicked and) greater demand than that from Moses, when they said, `Show us Allâh openly (face to face);' then a destructive punishment overtook them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf (for worship) after clear commandments had come to them, but We pardoned (them) even that. And We gave Moses an undisputed authority. ### Ali Quli Qarai The People of the Book ask you to bring down for them a Book from the sky. Certainly they asked Moses for [something] greater than that, for they said, ‘Show us Allah visibly,’ whereat a thunderbolt seized them for their wrongdoing. Then they took up the Calf [for worship], after all the manifest proofs that had come to them. Yet We excused that, and We gave Moses a manifest authority. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Ehl-i kitap (Yahudiler) senden, kendilerine "Gökten yazılı Kitap" indirmeni istiyorlar. . . Gerçekten (onlar) bundan daha büyüğünü Musa'dan istediler. . . "Allah'ı açıktan bize göster" demişlerdi de, zulümleri yüzünden onları yıldırım çarptı. . . Kendilerine apaçık deliller geldikten sonra tutup buzağıya tapınmaya başladılar. . . Onlar Musa'dan, bundan daha büyüğünü istemişler ve "Bize Allah'ı apaçık göster" demişlerdi. Zulümleri sebebiyle hemen onları yıldırım çarptı. Sonra kendilerine bunca açık mucizeler gelmişken buzağıya taptılar. Nihayet biz, tövbe ettiklerinden,onları bağışladık ve Musa'ya açık bir hakimiyet verdik. ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali Kitap ehli, senden kendilerine gökten bir kitap indirmeni istiyorlar. (Buna şaşma!) Musa'dan, bundan daha büyüğünü istemişler ve "Allah'ı bize açıkça göster" demişlerdi. Böylece zulümleri sebebiyle onları yıldırım çarptı. Sonra kendilerine apaçık deliller gelmesinin ardından (tuttular) buzağıyı tanrı edindiler. Biz bunu da affettik ve Musa'ya apaçık bir güç ve yetki verdik. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Ehli kitab senden üzerlerine Semadan bir kitab indirivermeni istiyorlar, çok görme Musaya bundan daha büyüğünü teklif ettiler, "Allahı bize açıktan göster" dediler de zulümlerile kendilerini yıldırım çarptı, sonra kendilerine o kadar açık mu'cizeler gelmişken tuttular danaya taptılar, derken biz bunlardan afvettik de Musaya kahir bir saltanat verdik ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Kitap ehli, senden kendilerine gökten bir kitap indirivermeni istiyorlar. Çok görme: Musa'dan daha da büyüğünü istediler ve: "Allah'ı bize açıkça göster." dediler de zulümleri yüzünden kendilerini yıldırım çarptı. Sonra kendilerine o kadar mucizeler gelmişken tuttular danaya taptılar. Biz bunları bağışladık ve Musa'ya güçlü bir saltanat verdik, ### Gültekin Onan Kitap ehli senden kendilerine gökten bir kitap indirmeni istiyor. Musa'dan bundan daha büyüğünü istemişlerdi. Demişlerdi ki: "Bize Tanrı'yı açıkça göster." Böylece zulümlerinden dolayı onlara yıldırım çarpmıştı. Ardından kendilerine apaçık belgeler geldikten sonra, buzağıyı (tanrı) edinmişlerdi. Yine bundan dolayı onları affettik ve Musa'ya apaçık olan ispatlayıcı bir delil verdik. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Ehl-i kitab, senin üzerlerine gökten bir kitab indirmeni isterler. Hakıykat, onlar Musadan daha büyüğünü istemişler de "Allahı açıkdan bize göster" demişlerdi. İşte zulümleri yüzünden onları yıldırım çarpmışdı. Bil'ahare kendilerine bunca açık ayetler ve deliller geldikden sonra da (Tanrı diye) buzağıya tutunmuşlardı. Nihayet biz (tevbe etdikleri için) bunları afvetmişdik. Biz Musaya apaçık (nice) hüccet (ler) verdik. ### İbni Kesir Kitab ehli senin kendilerine gökten bir kitab indirmeni isterler. Musa' dan da bundan daha büyüğünü istemişlerdi. Ve; bize Allah'ı apaçık göster, demişlerdi. Zulümlerinden dolayı onları yıldırım çarpmıştı. Kendilerine bunca açık ayetler ve deliller geldikten sonra da buzağıya taptılar. Nihayet Biz, bunu affettik ve Musa'ya apaçık bir hüccet verdik. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Tevratın izleyicileri, (ey Peygamber!) gökten kendilerine bir vahiy indirmeni isterler. Onlar Musadan bunun daha büyüğünü istemişler ve "Bizi Allah ile yüz yüze getir" demişlerdi de bu çarpıklıkları yüzünden onları bir ceza yıldırımı çarpmıştı. Daha sonra (altın) buzağıya tapmaya başlamışlardı ve hakikatin bütün kanıtları kendilerine geldikten sonra yapmışlardı bunu. Yine de bu (günahları)nı silmiş ve Musaya (hakikatin) açık kanıtını bahşetmiştik, ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Kitap ehli senin kendilerine gökten bir kitap indirmeni istiyorlar, Musa'dan bundan daha büyüğünü istemişlerdi: -Bize Allah'ı apaçık göster, demişlerdi. Zulümleri yüzünden onları yıldırım çarpmıştı. kendilerine belgeler geldikten sonra da buzağıyı ilah edinmişlerdi. Ardından onları bağışladık ve Musa'ya apaçık iktidar verdik. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Kitap ehli, senden, kendilerine gökten bir Kitap indirmeni istiyorlar. Musa'dan bundan daha büyüğünü istemişler: "Allah'ı bize açıkça göster!" demişlerdi. Haksızlıklarından dolayı derhal onları yıldırım gürültüsü yakalamıştı. Sonra kendilerine açık deliller gelmişken buzağıyı (tanrı) tutmuşlardı. Bundan da vazgeçtik ve Musa'ya açık bir yetki verdik. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Ehlikitap, senden kendilerine gökten bir kitap indirmeni istiyor. Zaten onlar Musa'dan da bundan daha büyüğünü istemişlerdi. Demişlerdi ki: "Allah'ı bize açıktan göster." Bunun üzerine zulümlerinden ötürü kendilerini yıldırım çarpmıştı. Sonra kendilerine açık-seçik kanıtların gelişi ardından buzağıya taptılar. Biz onların bu günahını da affettik. Biz Musa'ya apaçık bir kanıt/bir hükmetme gücü verdik. ### Mustafa İslamoğlu — Hayat Kitabı Kur’an Önceki vahyin takipçisi olan (Yahudiler), senden, gökten kendilerine özel bir kitap indirmeni istiyorlar. Onlar Musa'dan bundan daha büyüğünü istemişler ve "Bize Allah'ı doğrudan göster!" demişlerdi. Bu densizlikleri yüzünden yıldırım çarpmışa döndüler. Daha sonra kendilerine (tevhidin) apaçık belgeleri geldiği halde buzağı (heykeli)ne tapınmaya başladılar. Yine de onları bu günahlarından arındırmış, Musa'ya ise güçlü bir (nübüvvet) delili bahşetmiş ### Erhan Aktaş (Eski Baskı) — Kerim Kur'an Ehli Kitap, senden, kendilerine gökten bir kitap indirmeni istiyorlar. Daha önce Musa'dan bundan daha büyüğünü istemişlerdi: "Bize Allah'ı açıkça göster." demişlerdi. Bu haksızlıklarından dolayı, onları yıldırım çarpmıştı. Sonra, onlara açık kanıtlar gelmesine karşın buzağıyı onayladılar. Ardından, onları bağışladık ve Musa'ya apaçık bir yetki verdik. ### Süleymaniye Vakfı (Eski Baskı) — Süleymaniye Vakfı Meali Ehl-i Kitap[1] ister ki onlara gökten bir kitap indiresin. Musa'dan bunun daha büyüğünü istemişler ve "Bize Allah'ı apaçık göstersene." demişlerdi. Yanlış yapmalarından ötürü onları yıldırımlar çarpmıştı. Sonra onlara onca mucize gelmiş ama yine de o buzağıya sarılmışlardı. Onlar Musa'dan daha büyük bir istekte bulunmuş, "Bize Allah'ı apaçık göstersene!" demişlerdi. Yanlış yapmalarından ötürü onları yıldırım çarpmıştı[1]. Sonra onlara onca mucize gelmiş ama yine de o boğayı ilah edinmişlerdi[2].
