Surah An-Naml (The Ant) — سورة النمل - **Verse:** 34 / 93 · **Juz:** 19 · **Mushaf page:** 378 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-naml/verse-34 ## Arabic قَالَتْ اِنَّ الْمُلُوكَ اِذَا دَخَلُوا قَرْيَةً اَفْسَدُوهَا وَجَعَلُٓوا اَعِزَّةَ اَهْلِهَٓا اَذِلَّةًۚ وَكَذٰلِكَ يَفْعَلُونَ ## Transcription Qalat inna almulooka ithadakhaloo qaryatan afsadooha wajaAAaloo aAAizzata ahlihaathillatan wakathalika yafAAaloon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley She said, ‘When kings enter a city, they lay waste to it and make its mightiest inhabitants the most abased. That is what they too will do. ### Progressive Muslims She said: "When the kings enter a town they destroy it and make its most noble people humiliated. It is such that they do." ### Shabbir Ahmed She said, "Behold, when kings invade a town, they ruin it and humiliate its dignitaries. And thus do they do. ### Muhammad Asad Said she: "Verily, whenever kings enter a country they corrupt it, and turn the noblest of its people into the most abject. And this is the way they [always] behave? ### Marmaduke Pickthall She said: Lo! kings, when they enter a township, ruin it and make the honour of its people shame. Thus will they do. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The Queen said: "When the kings enter a country they cause corruption in it and abase those of its people who are held in honour.[1] This is what they are wont to do.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] In this one sentence a thorough criticism has been made of imperialism. The kings’ invasion of the other countries and the victorious nations’ violence against the oppressed nations has never been for the sake of reform and goodwill. The object has been to control and exploit the means and resources of sustenance granted to the other nation by God, and make it so helpless that it should never be able to rise in resistance and demand its share. For this purpose they block up all its means of prosperity, power and honor, crush down all self respecting elements, instill in its members attitudes of slavery, flattery, treachery and spying against one another, imitation of the conqueror and respect for his civilization, contempt of their own civilization and other such mean qualities of character. Thus, gradually they bring them down to such a low level of character where they may not hesitate even to sell off any of their most sacred objects of heritage and be ready to perform any wretched service on payment. - [2] This sentence has two meanings and both are equally probable: (1) It may be a part of the queen of Sheba’s speech, which she might have added in order to emphasize her foregoing words; and (2) it may be Allah's words which have been added as a parenthesis in support of the queen's speech. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "The problem is" she said, "that when kings make –hostile- entry into a country to take possession of the land they plunder it and they humble its superiors and render them inferior, and this is what they usually do!" ### Bijan Moeinian She said: "When the kings invade a town, they usually destroy it and undignified their citizens.
