Although Imam Malik himself used to perform a sajdah here (as cited by Qadi Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi in Ahkam al-Quran), yet he held the view that it was not obligatory to perform a sajdah here, the basis of his view being this tradition of Zaid bin Thabit: I recited Surah an-Najm before the Prophet (peace be upon him), and he did not perfom a sajdah. (Bukhari, Muslim, Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Daud, Nasai). But this Hadith does not negate the incumbency of the prostration here, for it is likely that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not perform the sajdah then due to some reason but might have performed it later. Other traditions on the subject are explicit that the prostration was always performed on this verse. Abdullah bin Masud, Ibn Abbas and Muttalib bin Abi Wadaah have unanimously stated that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this Surah for the first time in the Kabah, he had prostrated himself and along with him the whole assembly of the believers and the disbelievers had also fallen down prostrate. (Bukhari, Ahmad, Nasai). Ibn Umar has reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah an-Najm in the Prayer and prostrated himself and lay long in that state. (Baihaqi, Ibn Marduyah). Saburat al-Juhani states that Umar recited Surah an-Najm in the Fajr Prayer and performed a sajdah, then stood up, recited Surah al-Zilzal and performed the ruku. (Saed bin Mansur). Imam Malik himself has related this act of Umar in his Muwatta (Bab Maja fi Sajud al- Quren). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab You had better bow down in adoration to Allah your Creator, and prostrate your reason to His omnipotence, and pay to Him reverence and adoration ### Bijan Moeinian Fall prostrate before God in worship and start serving Him. ### Al-Hilali & Khan So fall you down in prostration to Allâh and worship Him (Alone). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali But fall ye down in prostration to Allah, and adore (Him)! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Instead, prostrate to Allah and worship ˹Him alone˺! ### Taqi Usmani Now, fall down in prostration and worship (Allah). ### Abdul Haleem Bow down before God and worship. ### Arthur John Arberry So bow yourselves before God, and serve Him! ### E.
