Surah An-Nahl (The Bee) — سورة النحل - **Verse:** 92 / 128 · **Juz:** 14 · **Mushaf page:** 276 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nahl/verse-92 ## Arabic وَلَا تَكُونُوا كَالَّت۪ي نَقَضَتْ غَزْلَهَا مِنْ بَعْدِ قُوَّةٍ اَنْكَاثاًۜ تَتَّخِذُونَ اَيْمَانَكُمْ دَخَلاً بَيْنَكُمْ اَنْ تَكُونَ اُمَّةٌ هِيَ اَرْبٰى مِنْ اُمَّةٍۜ اِنَّمَا يَبْلُوكُمُ اللّٰهُ بِه۪ۜ وَلَيُبَيِّنَنَّ لَكُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ مَا كُنْتُمْ ف۪يهِ تَخْتَلِفُونَ ## Transcription Wala takoonoo kallatee naqadatghazlaha min baAAdi quwwatin ankathan tattakhithoonaaymanakum dakhalan baynakum an takoona ommatun hiya arbamin ommatin innama yablookumu Allahu bihiwalayubayyinanna lakum yawma alqiyamati ma kuntumfeehi takhtalifoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Do not be like a woman who spoils the thread she has spun by unravelling it after it is strong, by making your oaths a means of deceiving one another, merely because one community is bigger than another. Allah is only testing you by this. He will make clear to you on the Day of Rising the things about which you differed. ### Progressive Muslims And do not be like she who unravelled her knitting after it had become strong, by breaking your oaths as a means of deception between you. That a nation shall be more numerous than another nation, for God puts you to the test by it. And He will show you on the Day of Resurrection that which you were disputing in. ### Shabbir Ahmed And be not like the knitting woman who spins yarn with tremendous hard work, and then breaks it apart. She wastes with her own hands a whole day's labor at the spinning wheel. (Breaking solemn pledges could nullify your good deeds). This is an example for you, if you abuse your promises to take advantage of others. People usually do that to advance from others wrongfully, or help their own groups (57:20). Allah has devised this as a test of your character. (Human beings are the only creatures who can make a pledge. Breaking promises violates human rights and hurts your own "Self"). On The Day of Resurrection you will appear before your Lord with the imprints of your doings on your "Self". He will then make you understand the dispute between your word and your action and between your reason and emotions. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And be not like her who breaks her thread after it was strong into fibres, taking your oaths as a deception between you because one community is more numerous than another community. And He will show you on the Day of Resurrection that which you were disputing in. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Do not be like the knitter who unravels her strong knitting into piles of flimsy yarn. This is your example if you abuse the oaths to take advantage of one another. Whether one group is larger than the other, GOD thus puts you to the test. He will surely show you on the Day of Resurrection everything you had disputed. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira And do not be like her who untwists her yarn having spun it into durable thread. Do not use your oaths deceitfully because one party has ascendency over you. God surely tries you in this way: He will make it clear to you on the Day of Resurrection what you were differing about. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And do not be like she who untwisted her spun thread after it was strong [by] taking your oaths as [means of] deceit between you because one community is more plentiful [in number or wealth] than another community. Allah only tries you thereby. And He will surely make clear to you on the Day of Resurrection that over which you used to differ. ### Muhammad Asad Hence, be not like her who breaks and completely untwists the yarn which she [herself] has spun and made strong-[be not like this by] using your oaths as a means of deceiving one another, simply because some of you may be more powerful than others. " By all this, God but puts you to a test-and [He does it] so that on Resurrection Day He might make clear unto you all that on which you were wont to differ. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And be not like unto her who unravelleth the thread, after she hath made it strong, to thin filaments, making your oaths a deceit between you because of a nation being more numerous than (another) nation. Allah only trieth you thereby, and He verily will explain to you on the Day of Resurrection that wherein ye differed. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And do not become like the woman who, after having painstakingly spun her yarn, caused it to disintegrate into pieces.[1] You resort to oaths as instruments of mutual deceit so that one people might take greater advantage than another although Allah puts you to the test through this.[2] Surely on the Day of Resurrection[3] He will make clear the Truth concerning the matters over which you differed. _Footnotes_ - [1] In this verse, Allah has enjoined three kinds of covenants which have been mentioned in the order of their importance. The first of these covenants is the one between man and his Allah which is the most important of all. The second in importance is the covenant between one man or one group of men and another man or another group of men, which is taken with Allah as a witness or in which the name of God has been used. The third covenant is that which has been made without using Allah’s name. Though this is third in importance, its fulfillment is as important as that of the first two and the violation of any of these has been prohibited. - [2] In this connection it should be noted that Allah has rebuked the people for the worst form of violation of treaties which has been creating the greatest disorder in the world. It is a pity that even big people consider it to be a virtue to violate treaties in order to gain advantages for their people in political, economic and religious conflicts. At one time the leader of one nation enters into a treaty with another nation for the interest of his own people but at another time the same leader publicly breaks the very same treaty for the interest of his people, or secretly violates it. It is an irony that such violations are made even by those people who are honest in their private lives. Moreover, it is regrettable that their own people do not protest against them; nay, they eulogize them for such shameful feats of diplomacy. Therefore, Allah warns that every such treaty is a test of the character of those who enter into it, and of their nations. They might gain some apparent advantage for their people in this way, but they will not escape their consequences on the Day of Judgment. - [3] This is to warn that decision about differences and disputes that lead to conflict will be made on the Day of Judgment. Therefore, these should not be made an excuse to break agreements and treaties. Even if one is wholly in the right and the opponent is wholly in the wrong. It is not right for the former to break treaties or make false propaganda or employ other deceitful methods to defeat the other. If one does so, it will go against him on that Day because righteousness demands that one should not only be right in his theories and aims but should also use right methods and employ right means. This warning has especially been given to those religious groups and sects who always suffer from this misunderstanding that they have a right to defeat their opponents because they are on the side of God and their opponents are rebels against Allah. Therefore, there is no obligation on them to stick to their treaties with their opponents. This was what the Arab Jews practiced, declaring: There is no moral obligation on us in regard to the pagan Arabs, and we are rightly entitled to practice dishonesty and deceit that might be of advantage to us and harmful to the disbelievers. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Do not be like the unstable workwoman who unravels and breaks the strands of her woven fabric after she has manufactured it in a loom by crossing the warp and the weft and interlaced them very strongly. What a tangled web you weave when first you practice to deceive. You use your oaths among yourselves with the guilt of deception residing in the intention; you break and dishonour your vows with the weak when you find them more advantageous with the strong. This is unexcusable nor is it in conformity with Islamic principles. Allah tests your prudence and in Day of Judgment shall He clear up matters with which you were at variance ### Bijan Moeinian Do not behave like that (foolish) person who, after having worked so hard to knit something, pulls the thread and breaks it into pieces! Remember this example when you want to break your promises (even the ones which are not made by taking God as a witness for its fulfillment) no matter how powerful you (or your group) are. This is one way that God puts you to the test. Remember, on the Day of Resurrection, He will play back for you whatever you were disputing among yourselves. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And be not like her who undoes the thread which she has spun, after it has become strong, by taking your oaths as a means of deception among yourselves, lest a nation should be more numerous than another nation. Allâh only tests you by this [i.e who obeys Allâh and fulfils Allâh’s Covenant and who disobeys Allâh and breaks Allâh’s Covenant]. And on the Day of Resurrection, He will certainly make clear to you that wherein you used to differ [i.e. a believer confesses and believes in the Oneness of Allâh and in the Prophethood of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم which the disbeliever denies and that is their difference amongst them in the life of this world][1]. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And be not like a woman who breaks into untwisted strands the yarn which she has spun, after it has become strong. Nor take your oaths to practise deception between yourselves, lest one party should be more numerous than another: for Allah will test you by this; and on the Day of Judgment He will certainly make clear to you (the truth of) that wherein ye disagree. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Do not be like the woman who ˹foolishly˺ unravels her yarn after it is firmly spun, by taking your oaths as a means of deceiving one another in favour of a stronger group. Surely Allah tests you through this. And on the Day of Judgment He will certainly make your differences clear to you. ### Taqi Usmani Do not be like the woman who had broken her yarn into pieces after spinning it firmly, by taking your oaths as means of mischief between yourselves, merely because a group gets greater benefit than the other. In fact, Allah puts you to a test thereby and, of course, on the Day of Resurrection He will explain to you all those matters in which you disagreed. ### Abdul Haleem Do not use your oaths to deceive each other- like a woman who unravels the thread she has firmly spun- just because one party may be more numerous than another. God tests you with this, and on the Day of the Resurrection He will make clear to you those things you differed about. ### Arthur John Arberry And be not as a woman who breaks her thread, after it is firmly spun, into fibres, by taking your oaths as mere mutual deceit, one nation being more numerous than another nation. God only tries you thereby; and certainly He will make clear to you upon the Day of Resurrection that whereon you were at variance. ### E. Surely, Allah only tries you thereby; and indeed He will definitely make evident to you upon the Day of the Resurrection that wherein you used to differ. ### George Sale And be not like unto her who undoeth that which she hath spun, untwisting it after she hath twisted it strongly; taking your oaths between you deceitfully, because one party is more numerous than another party. Verily God only tempteth you therein; and He will make that manifest unto you, on the day of resurrection, concerning which ye now disagree. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And do not be like a woman who breaks to untwisted fibers, the thread which she has spun, after it has become strong. And do not make promises to (hide the) acts of dishonesty (and deception) between yourselves, especially when there be more (people) in one party than in the other: Allah will test you by this; And on the Day of Judgment (Resurrection), He will surely make clear to you (the truth about) what you disagree. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And be not like the woman who breaks her yarn after spinning it strong with hard labour into thread. You use your oaths to deceive one another (for fear) lest one nation should become more powerful than the other nation. Surely, Allâh tries you thereby and on the Day of Resurrection will make clear to you all the things about which you had been differing (from one another). ### Ali Quli Qarai Do not be like her who would undo her yarn, breaking it up after [spinning it to] strength, by making your oaths a means of [mutual] deceit among yourselves, so that one community may become more affluent than another community. Allah only tests you thereby, and He will surely clarify for you on the Day of Resurrection what you used to differ about. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü İpliğini kuvvetle büktükten sonra söküp çözen (kadın) gibi olmayın. . . Bir toplum diğerinden daha kalabalık diye, yeminlerinizi aldatma vasıtası ediniyorsunuz. . . Kıyamet günü hakkında ihtilafa düştüğünüz şeyi size muhakkak açıklayacaktır. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim İpliğini sağlamca bükdükden sonra söküb bozan (kadın) gibi olmayın. "Bir ümmet diğer bir ümmetden (malca ve sayıca) daha çokdur" diye yeminlerinizi aranızda bir hıyle ve fesad (mevzuu) edinir misiniz? Her halde Allah sizi bununla imtihan eder. Hakkında ihtilafa düşmekde olduğunuz şey'i ise O, kıyamet gününde elbette size açıklayacakdır. ### İbni Kesir İpliğini iyice eğirip katladıktan sonra, söküp bozan kadın gibi olmayın. Kıyamet günü ihtilaf ettiğiniz şeyleri elbette size beyan edecektir. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Ve sakın yeminlerinizi, sırf içinizden bir grubun diğerinden daha güçlü olmasına dayanarak aranızda bir aldatma aracı olarak ele alıp da ipliğini iyice büküp berkittikten sonra onu çözüp koparan kadın gibi olmayın. Allah bütün bunlarla sizi sadece sınavdan geçiriyor ki, üzerinde çekişip durduğunuz her şeyi Kıyamet Günü'nde bütün açıklığıyla karşınıza koysun. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı İpliğini iyice eğirip sağlamlaştırdıktan sonra bozan kadın gibi olmayın.
