Surah An-Nahl (The Bee) — سورة النحل - **Verse:** 118 / 128 · **Juz:** 14 · **Mushaf page:** 279 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-an-nahl/verse-118 ## Arabic وَعَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ هَادُوا حَرَّمْنَا مَا قَصَصْنَا عَلَيْكَ مِنْ قَبْلُۚ وَمَا ظَلَمْنَاهُمْ وَلٰكِنْ كَانُٓوا اَنْفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ ## Transcription WaAAala allatheena hadooharramna ma qasasnaAAalayka min qablu wama thalamnahumwalakin kanoo anfusahum yathlimoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We forbade the Jews those things We told you about before. We did not wrong them; rather they wronged themselves. ### Progressive Muslims And for those who are Jews, We forbade what We narrated to you before. We did not wrong them, but it was themselves they used to wrong. ### Shabbir Ahmed To the Jews We had prohibited such things as We have mentioned to you before (6:147). We did them no wrong, but they were used to doing wrong to themselves (following their religious leadership instead of the Revelation). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And to those who hold to Judaism We made unlawful what We related to thee before; and We wronged them not, but they wronged their souls. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And for those who are Jewish, We forbade what We told to you before. And We wronged them not, but they were wont to wrong themselves. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary We have already recounted to you[1] what We prohibited[2] to the Jews. In so doing We did not wrong them; it is they who wronged themselves. _Footnotes_ - [1] This refers to: "And We prohibited all animals with claws to those people who had adopted Judaism." (Surah Al-Anaam, Ayat 146). In this(verse 118) Allah has stated that certain things were made unlawful because of the disobedience of the Jews. - [2] Here a question arises. Which of the two Surahs, Al-Anaam or An-Nahl, was first revealed? This is because in (verse 118), a reference has been made to (verse 146 of Al-Anaam). Also in (verse 119 of Al-Anaam): "And why should you not eat that thing over which Allah’s name has been mentioned, when He has already given you a detail of those things that have been declared to be unlawful for you except in case of extremity?" a reference has been made to (verse 115 of An- Nahl). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab As to the Jews, We forbade them -for their iniquities- the things We have already mentioned to you O Muhammad earlier* We never wronged them but it was they who always wronged themselves. ### Bijan Moeinian For the Jews, I prohibited what I told you before (VI:It was not the Lord Who imposed hardship (such as the sanctity of the Sabbath) upon them. They are the ones who asked for it. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And unto those who are Jews, We have forbidden such things as We have mentioned to you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم) before [see Verse 6:146].
