Surah Ali 'Imran (The Family of Imraan) — سورة آل عمران - **Verse:** 78 / 200 · **Juz:** 3 · **Mushaf page:** 59 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ali-imran/verse-78 ## Arabic وَاِنَّ مِنْهُمْ لَفَر۪يقاً يَلْوُ۫نَ اَلْسِنَتَهُمْ بِالْكِتَابِ لِتَحْسَبُوهُ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَمَا هُوَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِۚ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللّٰهِ وَمَا هُوَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللّٰهِۚ وَيَقُولُونَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ الْكَذِبَ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ ## Transcription Wa-inna minhum lafareeqan yalwoonaalsinatahum bilkitabi litahsaboohu minaalkitabi wama huwa mina alkitabiwayaqooloona huwa min AAindi Allahi wama huwa minAAindi Allahi wayaqooloona AAala Allahi alkathibawahum yaAAlamoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Among them is a group who distort the Book with their tongues so that you think it is from the Book when it is not from the Book. They say, ‘It is from Allah,’ but it is not from Allah. They tell a lie against Allah and they know it. ### Progressive Muslims And from amongst them is a group that twist their tongues with the Scripture so that you may think it is from the Scripture, while it is not from the Scripture, and they say it is from God while it is not from God, and they say about God lies while they know. ### Shabbir Ahmed Among them are those who distort the Scripture with their tongues, that you may think that what they say is from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "It is from Allah", when it is not from Allah. They speak a lie concerning Allah, and they know it. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And among them a faction distorts the Writ with their tongues, that you might think it from the Writ, but it is not from the Writ. And they say: “It is from God,” but it is not from God. And they ascribe the lie to God, when they know. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And from among them is a group who twist their tongues with the Book so that you may think it is from the Book, while it is not from the Book, and they say it is from God while it is not from God, and they say about God lies while they know. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Among them are those who twist their tongues to imitate the scripture, that you may think it is from the scripture, when it is not from the scripture, and they claim that it is from GOD, when it is not from GOD. Thus, they utter lies and attribute them to GOD, knowingly. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Among them is a section which distorts in reading the Scripture in a way that though it sounds like the Scripture, in fact it is not; yet they say it is from God, when they know it is not; and they lie about God, and knowingly. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from Allah," but it is not from Allah. And they speak untruth about Allah while they know. ### Muhammad Asad And, behold, there are indeed some among them who distort the Bible with their tongues, so as to make you think that [what they say] is from the Bible, the while it is not from the Bible; and who say, "This is from God," the while it is not from God: and thus do they tell a lie about God, being well aware [that it is a lie]. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And lo! there is a party of them who distort the Scripture with their tongues, that ye may think that what they say is from the Scripture, when it is not from the Scripture. And they say: It is from Allah, when it is not from Allah; and they speak a lie concerning Allah knowingly. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And there is a party among them who twist their tongues while reciting the Book to make you think that it is part of the Book when in fact it is not.[1] They say: 'It is from Allah', when in fact it is not from Allah. They falsely fix a lie upon Allah, and do so wittingly. _Footnotes_ - [1] This could mean that they either distort the meaning of the Scriptures or twist the words of the text in order to misinterpret it. Its real meaning, however, seems to be that when, during their reading of the Scriptures, they encounter any word or sentence which goes against their interests, and the beliefs and notions which they cherish, they distort the meaning of it by deliberately twisting their tongues. Instances of such tongue-twisting are not altogether wanting among those who, despite their belief in the Qur'an, share some of these people's characteristics. For instance, some people who stress the superhuman character of the Prophet (peace be on him) misread the following verse: innama ana basharun mithlukum (Qur'an 18: 110) (I am nothing but a human being like you), replacing innama by inna ma ana and translate it: '(O Prophet), say to them: "I am not a human being like you." ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Among Ahl al-Kitab are some who seem to recite divine revelations documented in the Quran in jest to distort the words from common use. They expect to imprint on your minds that these are verses of the Quran, while in fact they are not. They relate them to Allah when in fact they are not Allah’s words and they relate to Allah falsehood and they admit it into their minds. ### Bijan Moeinian Among the followers of the Scripture you will find some who twist the words out of context. They also pretend that the falsified verses of the Scripture is the word of God while it is not true. They lie and they know it very well. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And verily, among them is a party who distort the Book with their tongues (as they read), so that you may think it is from the Book, but it is not from the Book, and they say: "This is from Allâh," but it is not from Allâh; and they speak a lie against Allâh while they know it. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali There is among them a section who distort the Book with their tongues: (As they read) you would think it is a part of the Book, but it is no part of the Book; and they say, "That is from Allah," but it is not from Allah: It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and (well) they know it! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran There are some among them who distort the Book with their tongues to make you think this ˹distortion˺ is from the Book—but it is not what the Book says. They say, "It is from Allah"—but it is not from Allah. And ˹so˺ they attribute lies to Allah knowingly. ### Taqi Usmani Among them there is indeed a group who twist their tongues while (reading) the Book, so that you may deem it to be from the Book, while it is not from the Book. They say, "It is from Allah", while it is not from Allah; and they tell lies about Allah knowingly. ### Abdul Haleem There are some who twist the Scripture with their tongues to make you [people] think that what they say is part of the Scripture when it is not; they say it is from God when it is not; they attribute lies to God and they know it. ### Arthur John Arberry And there is a sect of them twist their tongues with the Book, that you may suppose it part of the Book, yet it is not part of the Book; and they say, 'It is from God,' yet it is not from God, and they speak falsehood against God, and that wittingly. ### E. Henry Palmer And, verily, amongst them is a sect who twist their tongues concerning the Book, that ye may reckon it to be from the Book, but it is not from the Book. They say, 'It is from God,' but it is not from God, and they tell a lie against God, the while they know. ### Hamid S. Aziz And, verily, amongst them is a sect who twist the Scriptures with their tongues, that you may suppose it to be from the Book, but it is not from the Book. They say, "It is from Allah," but it is not from Allah, and they tell a lie against Allah knowingly. ### Mahmoud Ghali And surely (there is) indeed a group of them who twist their tongues with the Book that you may reckon it a (part) of the Book, and in no way is it a (part) of the Book, And they say, "It is from the Providence of Allah, " and in no way is it from the Providence of Allah; and they say lies against Allah, and they know (that). ### George Sale And there are certainly some of them, who read the scriptures perversely, that ye may think what they read to be really in the scriptures, yet it is not in the scripture; and they say, this is from God; but it is not from God: And they speak that which is false concerning God, against their own knowledge. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And surely, there is among them a section who change the Book with their tongues (as they read): You would think it is a part of the Book, but it is not a part of the Book; And they say: "That is from Allah", but it is not from Allah: It is they who tell a lie against Allah, and they know it well! ### Amatul Rahman Omar There are some among them who twist their tongues while reciting their Scripture that you may think that (what they recite) is a part of the Scripture, whilst it is no part of the Scripture and they say, `This is from Allâh,' whereas it is not from Allâh. They tell a lie in the name of Allâh deliberately. ### Ali Quli Qarai There is indeed a group of them who twist their tongues to mimic the Book, that you may suppose that it is from the Book, though it is not from the Book, and they say, ‘It is from Allah,’ though it is not from Allah, and they attribute lies to Allah, and they know [it]. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Onlardan bir kısmı da vardır ki, vahiy olan bilgiden diye düşünmeniz için, hakikat bilgisinden olanları, anlamından kaydırarak (farklı bir anlam yükleyerek) konuşurlar. Oysa o kitaptan değildir. "Bu Tanrı katındandır" derler. Oysa o, Tanrı katından değildir. Kendileri de bildikleri halde Tanrı'ya karşı (böyle) yalan söylerler. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Ehl-i Kitabdan öyle bir güruh da vardır ki (bir şey okuyorlarmış gibi) dillerini Kitaba doğru eğib bükerler, siz onu Kitabdan sanasınız diye. Halbuki o, Kitabdan değildir. "Bu, Allah katındandır" derler, o ise, Allah katından değildir. Allaha karşı, kendileri bilib dururken, yalan söylerler. ### İbni Kesir Onlardan bir güruh vardır ki; kitabda olmadığı halde kitabdan zannedesiniz diye, dillerini eğip, bükerler. (Nisa 4/46) تفسير الطبري - (6 / 535) قال أبو جعفر: يعني بذلك جل ثناؤه: وإنّ من أهل الكتاب = وهم اليهود الذين كانوا حَوالي مدينة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم على عهده، من بني إسرائيل. وقوله ="لفريقًا"، يعني: جماعة (1) ="يلوون"، يعني: يحرِّفون ="ألسنتهم بالكتاب لتحسبوه من الكتاب"، يعني: لتظنوا أن الذي يحرّفونه بكلامهم من كتاب الله وتنزيله. (2) يقول الله عز وجل: وما ذلك الذي لوَوْا به ألسنتهم فحرّفوه وأحدثوه من كتاب الله، (3) ويزعمون أن ما لووا به ألسنتهم من التحريف والكذب والباطل فألحقوه في كتاب الله ="من عند الله"، يقول: مما أنزله الله على أنبيائه ="وما هو من عند الله"، يقول: وما ذلك الذي لووا به ألسنتهم فأحدثوه، مما أنزله الله إلى أحد من أنبيائه، ولكنه مما أحدثوه من قِبَل أنفسهم افتراء على الله. ### Mehmet Okuyan — Kur’an Meal-Tefsir Şüphesiz ki onlardan (kitap ehlinden) bir grup, (okuduklarını) kitaptan sanasınız diye Kitab'ı (Tevrat'ı okurken) dillerini eğip bükerler.
