Surah Ali 'Imran (The Family of Imraan) — سورة آل عمران - **Verse:** 72 / 200 · **Juz:** 3 · **Mushaf page:** 58 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ali-imran/verse-72 ## Arabic وَقَالَتْ طَٓائِفَةٌ مِنْ اَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ اٰمِنُوا بِالَّـذ۪ٓي اُنْزِلَ عَلَى الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا وَجْهَ النَّهَارِ وَاكْفُرُٓوا اٰخِرَهُ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَۚ ## Transcription Waqalat ta-ifatun min ahlialkitabi aminoo billathee onzilaAAala allatheena amanoo wajha annahariwakfuroo akhirahu laAAallahum yarjiAAoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley A group of the People of the Book say, ‘At the beginning of the day, you should claim to have iman in what was sent down to those who have iman, and then at the end of the day, you should reject it, so that hopefully they will revert. ### Progressive Muslims And a group from among the people of the Scripture said: "Believe in what was revealed to those who believed during the beginning of the day, and reject it by the end of it, perhaps they will return. " ### Shabbir Ahmed Some People of the Book say to one another, "Declare belief in what has been revealed to the believers in the morning, and reject belief in the evening so that the believers might waver and revert. Or let us declare belief in some part of the Revelation and deny the other to sound fair and cause confusion." ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And a number of the doctors of the Law say: “Believe in what was sent down upon those who heed warning at the beginning of the day, and deny at the end thereof, that they might return. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And a group from among the people of the Book said: "Believe in what was sent down to those who believe during the beginning of the day, and reject it by the end of it, perhaps they will return." ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Some followers of the scripture say, "Believe in what was sent down to the believers in the morning, and reject it in the evening; maybe someday they will revert. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira A section of the people of the Book say: "Believe in the morning what has been revealed to the faithful, and deny in the evening; they might perhaps turn back; ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will abandon their religion, ### Muhammad Asad And some of the followers of earlier revelation say [to one another]: "Declare your belief in what has been revealed unto those who believe [in Muhammad] at the beginning of the day, and deny the truth of what came later, so that they might go back [on their faith]; ### Marmaduke Pickthall And a party of the People of the Scripture say: Believe in that which hath been revealed unto those who believe at the opening of the day, and disbelieve at the end thereof, in order that they may return; ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary A party of the People of the Book said: 'Believe in the morning what has been revealed to those who believe, and then deny it in the evening that they may thus retract (from their faith).'[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This was one of the devices adopted by the leaders and rabbis of the Jews who lived on the outskirts of Madina in order to damage the mission of Islam. To demoralize the Muslims and create misgivings about the Prophet (peace be on him), they sent their agents to embrace Islam publicly, then to renounce it, and subsequently to go about telling people they had done so because of the faults they had found in Islam, the Muslims and their Prophet. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab In their malice, did some among Ahl al-Kitab incite their fellow religionists to pretend at the beginning of the day that they give credence to what has been revealed to you Muslims. Then at the end of the day they repudiated it as if it were a second thought, expecting that those who are unsettled in allegiance or belief among you may hopefully reject it all. ### Bijan Moeinian Some of the followers of the Scripture [have recourse to a trick to dishearten the Muslims by] saying in the morning that they have believed and later in the day proclaiming that they are disgusted with Islam [for such and such reason. ] ### Al-Hilali & Khan And a party of the people of the Scripture say: "Believe in the morning in that which is revealed to the believers (Muslims), and reject it at the end of the day, so that they may turn back. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali A section of the People of the Book say: "Believe in the morning what is revealed to the believers, but reject it at the end of the day; perchance they may (themselves) Turn back; ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran A group among the People of the Book said ˹to one another˺, "Believe in what has been revealed to the believers in the morning and reject it in the evening, so they may abandon their faith. ### Taqi Usmani And a group from the people of the Book said (to their people), "Believe in what has been revealed to the believers in the early part of the day, and disbelieve at the end of it, so that they may turn back. ### Abdul Haleem Some of the People of the Book say, ‘At the beginning of the day, believe in what has been revealed to these believers [the Muslims], then at the end of the day reject it, so that they too may turn back, ### Arthur John Arberry There is a party of the People of the Book say, 'Believe in what has been sent down upon those who believe at the beginning of the day, and disbelieve at the end of it; haply they will then return; ### E.
