Surah Ali 'Imran (The Family of Imraan) — سورة آل عمران - **Verse:** 64 / 200 · **Juz:** 3 · **Mushaf page:** 57 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ali-imran/verse-64 ## Arabic قُلْ يَٓا اَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ تَعَالَوْا اِلٰى كَلِمَةٍ سَوَٓاءٍ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَكُمْ اَلَّا نَعْبُدَ اِلَّا اللّٰهَ وَلَا نُشْرِكَ بِه۪ شَيْـٔاً وَلَا يَتَّخِذَ بَعْضُنَا بَعْضاً اَرْبَاباً مِنْ دُونِ اللّٰهِۜ فَاِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَقُولُوا اشْهَدُوا بِاَنَّا مُسْلِمُونَ ## Transcription Qul ya ahla alkitabi taAAalawila kalimatin sawa-in baynana wabaynakum allanaAAbuda illa Allaha wala nushrika bihishay-an wala yattakhitha baAAdunabaAAdan arbaban min dooni Allahi fa-intawallaw faqooloo ishhadoo bi-anna muslimoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Say, ‘People of the Book! come to a proposition which is the same for us and you – that we should worship none but Allah and not associate any partners with Him and not take one another as lords besides Allah. ’ If they turn away, say, ‘Bear witness that we are Muslims.’ ### Progressive Muslims Say: "O people of the Scripture, let us come to a common understanding between us and between you; that we do not serve except God, and do not set up anything at all with Him, and that none of us takes each other as patrons beside God. " If they turn away, then Say: "Bear witness that we have surrendered." ### Shabbir Ahmed Say, "O People of the Book! Let us come to a mutual agreement, that we shall worship and obey none but God. That neither shall we ascribe divinity to anyone beside Him, nor shall we take human beings as our lords beside God." And if they turn away, then say: Bear witness that we are they who have surrendered (unto Him). ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Say:[1] 'People of the Book! Come to a word common between us and you:[2] that we shall serve none but Allah and shall associate none with Him in His divinity and that some of us will not take others as lords beside Allah.' And if they turn their backs (from accepting this call), tell them: 'Bear witness that we are the ones who have submitted ourselves exclusively to Allah.' _Footnotes_ - [1] This marks the beginning of the third discourse of this surah. Its contents invite the conclusion that the surah was revealed sometime between the battles of Badr and Uhud. The subjects of these three discourses are so closely interrelated that some commentators have wrongly understood the verses which follow to be part of the foregoing discourse. From the whole tenor of the discourse which now begins, however, it is evident that it is addressed to the Jews. - [2] The invitation here is for the two parties to agree on something believed in by one of them, the Muslims, and the soundness of which could hardly be denied by the other party, the Christians. For this was the belief of their own Prophets and had been taught in their own scriptures. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Say to them: "O you Ahl al-Kitab, let us come to terms to agree among ourselves that we venerate and worship no one but Allah and that we shall not incorporate with Him other deities. Nor shall any of us take another for a godhead or a tutelary guardian besides Allah." If they turn a deaf ear and insist upon hugging their irreverent conviction to their hearts, then say to them: "Do then bear witness that we conform our will to Allah’s blessed will, and this reflects conformity to Islam". ### Bijan Moeinian Say: "O the followers of the Scripture, let us establish a common ground: That we worship none but God; that we do not associate no partner with God, that we do not idolize any human being (whether such person is a Prophet, sport champion, actor, politician, etc. )" Now if they refuse this proposal, say: “Bear witness that we are Muslim (submitters to God.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "O people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians): Come to a word that is just between us and you, that we worship none but Allâh (Alone), and that we associate no partners with Him, and that none of us shall take others as lords besides Allâh[1]. Then, if they turn away, say: "Bear witness that we are Muslims." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Say: "O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you: That we worship none but Allah; that we associate no partners with him; that we erect not, from among ourselves, Lords and patrons other than Allah." So, in case they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims." (Literally: we have surrendered "to Allah"). ### George Sale Say, O ye who have received the scripture, come to a just determination between us and you; that we worship not any except God, and associate no creature with him; and that the one of us take not the other for lords, beside God.
