Surah Ali 'Imran (The Family of Imraan) — سورة آل عمران - **Verse:** 187 / 200 · **Juz:** 4 · **Mushaf page:** 74 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-ali-imran/verse-187 ## Arabic وَاِذْ اَخَذَ اللّٰهُ م۪يثَاقَ الَّذ۪ينَ اُو۫تُوا الْكِتَابَ لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُ لِلنَّاسِ وَلَا تَكْتُمُونَهُۘ فَنَبَذُوهُ وَرَٓاءَ ظُهُورِهِمْ وَاشْتَرَوْا بِه۪ ثَمَناً قَل۪يلاًۜ فَبِئْسَ مَا يَشْتَرُونَ ## Transcription Wa-ith akhatha Allahumeethaqa allatheena ootoo alkitabalatubayyinunnahu linnasi wala taktumoonahufanabathoohu waraa thuhoorihim washtarawbihi thamanan qaleelan fabi/sa ma yashtaroon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Allah made a covenant with those given the Book: ‘You must make it clear to people and not conceal it. ’ But they toss it in disdain behind their backs and sell it for a paltry price. What an evil sale they make! ### Progressive Muslims And God took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture: "You will make it clear to the people and not conceal it. " But they threw it behind their backs and purchased with it a cheap price. Miserable indeed is what they have purchased. ### Shabbir Ahmed Allah took a Covenant from those who received the Scripture, "You shall convey the Message to people and never conceal it. " But they flung it behind their backs, and traded it away for a little gain. What a miserable bargain! ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And when God took an agreement of those given the Writ: “You are to make it plain to mankind, and not to conceal it,” then they cast it behind their backs, and sold it at a cheap price; and evil is what they bought. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And God took the covenant of those who were given the Book: "You will make it clear to the people and not conceal it." What a miserable trade. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira And remember when God took a promise from the people of the Book to make its (truth) known to mankind, and not keep back any part of it, they set aside (the pledge), and sold it away for a little gain but how wretched the bargain that they made! ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And [mention, O Muúammad], when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear to the people and not conceal it. But they cast this [pledge] behind their backs, and bartered it away for a trifling gain: and how evil was their bargain! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And (remember) when Allah laid a charge on those who had received the Scripture (He said): Ye are to expound it to mankind and not to hide it. But they flung it behind their backs and bought thereby a little gain. Verily evil is that which they have gained thereby. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And recall when Allah took a covenant from those who were given the Book: 'You shall explain it to men and not hide it.[1] Then they cast the Book behind their backs, and sold it away for a trivial gain. Evil indeed is their bargain. _Footnotes_ - [1] Although the Jews remembered that some Prophets had been endowed with the miracle of consuming fire, they conveniently forgot their covenant with God at the time they were entrusted with the Scripture, and their mission as the bearers of the Scripture. The 'covenant' to which this verse alludes is mentioned at several places in the Bible. In the last sermon of Moses, cited in Deuteronomy, he again and again calls the attention of Israel to the covenant in the following words: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your might. And these words which I command shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. And you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.' (Deuteronomy 6: 4-9.)Then, in his last testament Moses said: 'And on the day you pass over the Jordan to the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall set up large stones, and plaster them with plaster and you shall write upon them all the words of this law, when you pass over to enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the Lord, the God of your fathers, has promised you. And when you have passed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, concerning which I command you this day, on Mount Ebal, and you shall plaster them with plaster.' (Deuteronomy 27: 2-4.) When the Levites were handed a copy of the Torah, they were instructed to gather men, women and children every seventh year on the occasion of the Feast of Tabernacles and to recite the entire text to them. But their indifference to the Book of God grew to such a point that seven hundred years later even the priests of the Temple of Solomon and the Jewish ruler of Jerusalem did not know that they had the Book of God with them. (See 2 Kings 22: 8-13.) ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab For once did Allah make a covenant with Ahl AL-Kitab. They should make the Book genuinely known to everyone and not hide the least part of its text and its precepts. However they cast it behind their backs and exchanged the truth for the worthless vanity of the fleeting and ephemeral world. How evil and how ill indeed is the advantage they gained. ### Bijan Moeinian Recall that God took a covenant from the followers of the Scripture that they should not hide the truth and that they should spread it [Deuteronomy (4:2), (6:7-9). Unfortunately they broke their promise [up to the point that years after Moses they did not know that there was such book known as Torah (see II Kings, 22:8-13)] and traded their faith for a hand full of money. What a loss their deal was. ### Al-Hilali & Khan (And remember) when Allâh took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) to make it (the news of the coming of Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم and the religious knowledge) known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it, but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And indeed worst is that which they bought. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And remember Allah took a covenant from the People of the Book, to make it known and clear to mankind, and not to hide it; but they threw it away behind their backs, and purchased with it some miserable gain! And vile was the bargain they made! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran ˹Remember, O  Prophet,˺ when Allah took the covenant of those who were given the Scripture to make it known to people and not hide it, yet they cast it behind their backs and traded it for a fleeting gain. What a miserable profit! ### Taqi Usmani When Allah took a pledge from those who were given the Book: "You shall make it known to people, and you shall not conceal it," they threw it away behind their backs, and acquired a small price for it. So, evil is what they acquire. ### Abdul Haleem God took a pledge from those who were given the Scripture- ‘Make it known to people; do not conceal it’- but they tossed the pledge over their shoulders, they bartered it for a small price: what a bad bargain they made! ### Arthur John Arberry And when God took compact with those who had been given the Book: 'You shall make it clear unto the people, and not conceal it. ' But they rejected it behind their backs and sold it for a small price -- how evil was that their selling! ### E. Henry Palmer When God took the compact from those who have had the Book brought them that 'Ye shall of a surety manifest it unto men, and not hide it,' they cast it behind their backs, and bought therewith a little price,- but evil is what they buy. ### Hamid S. Aziz When Allah took the covenant from those who have received the Scripture, (and said), "You shall of a surety manifest it unto men, and not hide it", they cast it behind their backs, and bought therewith a little gain, but evil is what they buy therewith. ### Mahmoud Ghali And as Allah took Compact with the ones to whom the Book was brought: "Indeed you shall definitely make it evident to mankind and not keep it back. " Yet, they flung it off beyond their backs and traded it for a little price. Derken onlar sözlerini geride bırakıp, karşılığında az bir bedel aldılar. Ne kötü bir alışveriş! ### Ali Bulaç — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Türkçe Anlamı Hani kitap verilenlerden: "Onu mutlaka insanlara açıklayacaksınız, onu gizlemeyeceksiniz" diye kesin söz almıştı. Fakat onlar, bunu arkalarına attılar ve ona karşılık az bir değeri satın aldılar. O aldıkları şey ne kötüdür. ### Bayraktar Bayraklı — Yeni Bir Anlayışın Işığında Kur'an Meali Allah kendilerine kitap verilenlerden şöyle bir söz almıştı: "Onu insanlara açıklayınız ve hiçbir şey gizlemeyiniz." Onlar ise bunu kulak ardı ettiler, onu küçük bir kazançla değiştirdiler. Yaptıkları alışveriş ne kadar kötüdür! ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali Hani Allah, kendilerine kitap verilenlerden, "Onu (Kitabı) mutlaka insanlara açıklayacaksınız, onu gizlemeyeceksiniz" diye sağlam söz almıştı. Fakat onlar verdikleri sözü, arkalarına atıp onu az bir karşılığa değiştiler. Yaptıkları bu alışveriş ne kadar kötüdür! ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Vaktile Allah kendilerine kitab verilen okur yazarların şöyle misakını aldı: celalim hakkı için onu nasa anlatacaksınız, ketmetmeyeceksiniz, derken onlar onu omuzlarının arkasına attılar da mukabilinde biraz para aldılar, bakın ne kötü alış veriş ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Vaktiyle Allah, kitap verilen okur yazarlardan: "Andolsun ki, onu insanlara anlatacaksınız ve gizlemeyeceksiniz." diye söz almıştı. Derken onlar, onu arkalarına atıp az bir para karşılığında sattılar. Ne kötü bir alışverişti bu! ### Gültekin Onan Hani kitap verilenlerden: "Onu mutlaka insanlara açıklayacaksınız, onu gizlemeyeceksiniz" diye kesin söz almıştı. Fakat onlar, bunu arkalarına attılar ve ona karşılık az bir değeri satın aldılar. O aldıkları şey ne kötüdür. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Allah bir zaman kendilerine Kitab verilenlerden "Onu (Celalim hakkı için) behemehal insanlara açıklayıb anlatacaksınız, onu gizlemeyeceksiniz" diye te'minat almışdı. Onlar ise o sözü sırtlarının arkasına atdılar. Onun mukaabilinde az bir menfeati satın aldılar. Müşteri oldukları o şey ne kötüdür!.. ### İbni Kesir Hani Allah, kendilerine kitab verilenlerden; onu mutlaka insanlara açıklayacaksınız, gizlemeyeceksiniz, diye söz almıştı. Onlar ise bunu arkalarına attılar ve az bir değere değiştiler. Satın aldıkları şey ne kötüdür. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Allah, geçmişte kendilerine vahiy verilenlere, "Bunu insanlara açıklayın ve ondan hiçbir şeyi gizlemeyin!" (buyurduğunda, bunu yapacaklarına) dair onlardan güçlü bir taahhüt almıştı. Ama onlar bu taahhütlerini kulak arkasına attılar ve küçük bir kazançla değiştirdiler: Ne kötü bir alışverişti bu! ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Allah kitap verilenlerden, "kitabı insanlara muhakkak açıklayacaksınız, gizlemeyeceksiniz" diye söz almıştı da, onlar, kitabı arkalarına atıp umursamamışlar, az bir bedele karşılık değişmişlerdi, alış verişleri ne kötüdür. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Allah, kendilerine Kitap verilenlerden: "Onu mutlaka insanlara açıklayacaksınız, gizlemeyeceksiniz!" diye söz almıştı. Fakat onlar, verdikleri sözü sırtlarının ardına attılar ve karşılığında birkaç para aldılar. Ne kötü şey satın alıyorlar. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Allah, kendilerine kitap verilenlerden şu yolda misak almıştı: "Onu insanlara mutlaka açık-seçik bildireceksiniz, onu saklamayacaksınız." Ama onlar Kitap'ı sırtlarının gerisine attılar, basit bir ücret karşılığı onu sattılar. Ne kötü şey satın alıyorlar! ### Mustafa İslamoğlu — Hayat Kitabı Kur’an Allah, (daha önceden) vahye muhatap olanlardan "Onu insanlara açıklayacaksınız ve kesinlikle gizlemeyeceksiniz" diye söz almıştı. Fakat onlar bunu kulak ardı ettiler ve değersiz bir menfaat karşılığı pazarladılar: ne kötü bir alışverişti bu! ### Erhan Aktaş (Eski Baskı) — Kerim Kur'an Hani Allah, Kitap Ehli'nden, onu insanlara açıklayacaklarına ve asla gizlemeyeceklerine dair kesin bir söz almıştı.
