_In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful._

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

## Verse 1

اِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُۙ

Itha waqaAAati alwaqiAAat

When the Event befalls,

## Verse 2

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌۢ

Laysa liwaqAAatiha kathiba

— There is no denying its befalling —

## Verse 3

خَافِضَةٌ رَافِعَةٌۙ

Khafidatun rafiAAa

Abasing, exalting;

## Verse 4

اِذَا رُجَّتِ الْاَرْضُ رَجاًّۙ

Itha rujjati al-ardu rajja

When the earth is shaken with convulsion,

## Verse 5

وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَساًّۙ

Wabussati aljibalu bassa

And the mountains crumble away

## Verse 6

فَكَانَتْ هَبَٓاءً مُنْبَثاًّۙ

Fakanat habaan munbaththa

And are dust dispersing,

## Verse 7

وَكُنْتُمْ اَزْوَاجاً ثَلٰثَةًۜ

Wakuntum azwajan thalatha

And you will be three kinds:

## Verse 8

فَاَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَٓا اَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِۜ

Faas-habu almaymanati maas-habu almaymanat

The companions of the right! — what of the companions of the right? —

## Verse 9

وَاَصْحَابُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَٓا اَصْحَابُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِۜ

Waas-habu almash-amati maas-habu almash-amat

And the companions of the left! — what of the companions of the left? —

## Verse 10

وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَۙ

Wassabiqoona assabiqoon

And the foremost! The foremost:

اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَۚ

Ola-ika almuqarraboon

Those are they brought near,

## Verse 12

ف۪ي جَنَّاتِ النَّع۪يمِ

Fee jannati annaAAeem

In the Gardens of Bliss,

## Verse 13

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْاَوَّل۪ينَۙ

Thullatun mina al-awwaleen

(A multitude of the former peoples,

## Verse 14

وَقَل۪يلٌ مِنَ الْاٰخِر۪ينَۜ

Waqaleelun mina al-akhireena

And a few of the latter)

## Verse 15

عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مَوْضُونَةٍۙ

AAala sururin mawdoona

On jewel-woven couches,

## Verse 16

مُتَّكِـ۪ٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِل۪ينَ

Muttaki-eena AAalayha mutaqabileen

Reclining upon them, facing one another.

## Verse 17

يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُخَلَّدُونَۙ

Yatoofu AAalayhim wildanunmukhalladoon

Circulating among them are youths made eternal

## Verse 18

بِاَكْوَابٍ وَاَبَار۪يقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَع۪ينٍۙ

Bi-akwabin waabareeqa waka/sinmin maAAeen

With cups, and jugs, and a glass from a running spring,

## Verse 19

لَا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنْزِفُونَۙ

La yusaddaAAoona AAanhawala yunzifoon

Wherefrom they have no headache, nor are they intoxicated;

## Verse 20

وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَۙ

Wafakihatin mimmayatakhayyaroon

And such fruit as they choose,

## Verse 21

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَۜ

Walahmi tayrin mimmayashtahoon

And such flesh of fowl as they desire,

## Verse 22

وَحُورٌ ع۪ينٌۙ

Wahoorun AAeen

And pure, lustrous-eyed maidens,

## Verse 23

كَاَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ۬ الْمَكْنُونِۚ

Kaamthali allu/lui almaknoon

As the likeness of hidden pearls

## Verse 24

جَزَٓاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

Jazaan bima kanooyaAAmaloon

As reward for what they did.

## Verse 25

لَا يَسْمَعُونَ ف۪يهَا لَغْواً وَلَا تَأْث۪يماًۙ

La yasmaAAoona feeha laghwanwala ta/theema

They hear therein neither vain speech, nor cause of sin,

## Verse 26

اِلَّا ق۪يلاً سَلَاماً سَلَاماً

Illa qeelan salaman salama

Only the saying: “Peace! Peace!”

وَاَصْحَابُ الْيَم۪ينِ مَٓا اَصْحَابُ الْيَم۪ينِۜ

Waas-habu alyameeni maas-habu alyameen

And the companions of the right! — what of the companions on the right? —

## Verse 28

ف۪ي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍۙ

Fee sidrin makhdood

Among thornless lote trees,

## Verse 29

وَطَلْحٍ مَنْضُودٍۙ

Watalhin mandood

And acacias layered,

## Verse 30

وَظِلٍّ مَمْدُودٍۙ

Wathillin mamdood

And shade extended,

## Verse 31

وَمَٓاءٍ مَسْكُوبٍۙ

Wama-in maskoob

And water poured forth,

## Verse 32

وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَث۪يرَةٍۙ

Wafakihatin katheera

And fruit abounding,

## Verse 33

لَا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍۙ

La maqtooAAatin walamamnooAAa

Unfailing, unforbidden,

## Verse 34

وَفُرُشٍ مَرْفُوعَةٍۜ

Wafurushin marfooAAa

And couches raised high.

## Verse 35

اِنَّٓا اَنْشَأْنَاهُنَّ اِنْشَٓاءًۙ

Inna ansha/nahunna inshaa

We have produced them in a new creation

## Verse 36

فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ اَبْكَاراًۙ

FajaAAalnahunna abkara

And made them virgins,

## Verse 37

عُـرُباً اَتْـرَاباًۙ

AAuruban atraba

Devoted, well-matched,

## Verse 38

لِاَصْحَـابِ الْيَم۪ينِۜ ۟

Li-as-habi alyameen

For the companions of the right:

## Verse 39

ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْاَوَّل۪ينَۙ

Thullatun mina al-awwaleen

A multitude of the former peoples,

## Verse 40

وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْاٰخِر۪ينَۜ

Wathullatun mina al-akhireen

And a multitude of the latter.

## Verse 41

وَاَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِۙ مَٓا اَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِۜ

Waas-habu ashshimalima as-habu ashshimal

And the companions of the left! What of the companions of the left?

## Verse 42

ف۪ي سَمُومٍ وَحَم۪يمٍۙ

Fee samoomin wahameem

In scorching wind and scalding water,

## Verse 43

وَظِلٍّ مِنْ يَحْمُومٍۙ

Wathillin min yahmoom

And a shadow of black smoke,

## Verse 44

لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَر۪يمٍ

La baridin wala kareem

Neither cool nor noble.

## Verse 45

اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذٰلِكَ مُتْرَف۪ينَۚ

Innahum kanoo qabla thalikamutrafeen

They were, before that, opulent,

## Verse 46

وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظ۪يمِۚ

Wakanoo yusirroona AAalaalhinthi alAAatheem

And persisted in the Great Perjury,

## Verse 47

وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ اَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَاباً وَعِظَاماً ءَاِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَۙ

Wakanoo yaqooloona a-itha mitnawakunna turaban waAAithamana-inna lamabAAoothoon

And said: “When we are dead and are dust and bones, will we be raised,

## Verse 48

اَوَاٰبَٓاؤُ۬نَا الْاَوَّلُونَ

Awa abaona al-awwaloon

“Or our fathers of former times?”

## Verse 49

قُلْ اِنَّ الْاَوَّل۪ينَ وَالْاٰخِر۪ينَۙ

Qul inna al-awwaleena wal-akhireen

Say thou: “The former peoples and the latter

## Verse 50

لَمَجْمُوعُونَ اِلٰى م۪يقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ

LamajmooAAoona ila meeqatiyawmin maAAloom

“Will be gathered together at the appointed time of a known day.”

## Verse 51

ثُمَّ اِنَّكُمْ اَيُّهَا الضَّٓالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَۙ

Thumma innakum ayyuha addalloonaalmukaththiboon

Then you, O you, the straying and the denying,

## Verse 52

لَاٰكِلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِنْ زَقُّومٍۙ

Laakiloona min shajarin min zaqqoom

You will eat of a tree of Zaqqūm,

## Verse 53

فَمَالِـؤُ۫نَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَۚ

Famali-oona minha albutoon

And fill your bellies therewith,

## Verse 54

فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَم۪يمِۚ

Fashariboona AAalayhi mina alhameem

And drink on top of that of the scalding water,

## Verse 55

فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْه۪يمِۜ

Fashariboona shurba alheem

And drink as the thirst-wracked camels drink.

## Verse 56

هٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدّ۪ينِۜ

Hatha nuzuluhum yawma addeen

This is their welcome on the Day of Judgment.

## Verse 57

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ۟

Nahnu khalaqnakum falawlatusaddiqoon

We created you. Oh, that you but gave credence!

## Verse 58

اَفَرَاَيْتُمْ مَا تُمْنُونَۜ

Afaraaytum ma tumnoon

Have you considered what you emit?

## Verse 59

ءَاَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُٓ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ

Aantum takhluqoonahu am nahnu alkhaliqoon

Did you create it or are We the creators?

## Verse 60

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوق۪ينَۙ

Nahnu qaddarna baynakumualmawta wama nahnu bimasbooqeen

We have decreed death among you; and We will not be outrun,

## Verse 61

عَلٰٓى اَنْ نُبَدِّلَ اَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ ف۪ي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ

AAala an nubaddila amthalakumwanunshi-akum fee ma la taAAlamoon

That We will change your likenesses, and produce you in what you know not.

## Verse 62

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْاَةَ الْاُو۫لٰى فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ

Walaqad AAalimtumu annash-ata al-oolafalawla tathakkaroon

And you have known the former creation. Oh, that you but took heed!

## Verse 63

اَفَرَاَيْتُمْ مَا تَحْرُثُونَۜ

Afaraaytum ma tahruthoon

Have you considered that which you sow?

ءَاَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُٓ  اَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ

Aantum tazraAAoonahu am nahnu azzariAAoon

Is it you who cause it to grow or are We the growers?

## Verse 65

لَوْ نَشَٓاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَاماً فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ

Law nashao lajaAAalnahu hutamanfathaltum tafakkahoon

If We willed, We could make it debris, and you would remain bitterly jesting:

## Verse 66

اِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَۙ

Inna lamughramoon

“We are debt-laden!

## Verse 67

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ

Bal nahnu mahroomoon

“Nay, we have been deprived!”

## Verse 68

اَفَرَاَيْتُمُ الْمَٓاءَ الَّذ۪ي تَشْرَبُونَۜ

Afaraaytumu almaa allatheetashraboon

Have you considered the water which you drink?

## Verse 69

ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُونَ

Aantum anzaltumoohu mina almuzni am nahnualmunziloon

Is it you who sent it down from the rain clouds or are We the senders?

## Verse 70

لَوْ نَشَٓاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ اُجَاجاً فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ

Law nashao jaAAalnahu ojajanfalawla tashkuroon

If We willed, We could make it bitter. Oh, that you were but grateful!

## Verse 71

اَفَرَاَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّت۪ي تُورُونَۜ

Afaraaytumu annara allateetooroon

Have you considered the fire which you light?

## Verse 72

ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَـهَٓا اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِؤُ۫نَ

Aantum ansha/tum shajarataha am nahnualmunshi-oon

Did you produce the tree thereof or were We the producers?

## Verse 73

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعاً لِلْمُقْو۪ينَۚ

Nahnu jaAAalnaha tathkiratanwamataAAan lilmuqween

We made it a reminder, and a benefit for the desert-travellers.

## Verse 74

فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظ۪يمِ۟

Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem

So give thou glory with the name of thy Lord, the Great!

## Verse 75

فَلَٓا اُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِـعِ النُّجُومِۙ

Fala oqsimu bimawaqiAAi annujoom

Then I swear by the setting of the stars:

## Verse 76

وَاِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظ۪يمٌۙ

Wa-innahu laqasamun law taAAlamoona AAatheem

— And it is a tremendous oath, if you but knew —

## Verse 77

اِنَّهُ لَقُرْاٰنٌ كَر۪يمٌۙ

Innahu laqur-anun kareem

It is a noble recitation

## Verse 78

ف۪ي كِتَابٍ مَكْنُونٍۙ

Fee kitabin maknoon

In a hidden Writ,

## Verse 79

لَا يَمَسُّهُٓ اِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَۜ

La yamassuhu illa almutahharoon

— None will touch it save those purified—

## Verse 80

تَنْز۪يلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَم۪ينَ

Tanzeelun min rabbi alAAalameen

A revelation from the Lord of All Creation!

## Verse 81

اَفَبِهٰذَا الْحَد۪يثِ اَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَۙ

Afabihatha alhadeethi antummudhinoon

Is it then this narration you disdain

## Verse 82

وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَـكُمْ اَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ

WatajAAaloona rizqakum annakum tukaththiboon

And make denial thereof your livelihood?

## Verse 83

فَلَوْلَٓا اِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَۙ

Falawla itha balaghati alhulqoom

Oh, that when it reaches the throat[...]!

وَاَنْتُمْ ح۪ينَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُونَۙ

Waantum heena-ithin tanthuroona

But you at that time will look on.

## Verse 85

وَنَحْنُ اَقْرَبُ اِلَيْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلٰـكِنْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ

Wanahnu aqrabu ilayhi minkum walakinla tubsiroon

And We were nearer to it than you, but you saw not.

## Verse 86

فَلَوْلَٓا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَيْرَ مَد۪ين۪ينَۙ

Falawla in kuntum ghayra madeeneen

Oh, that — if you are to be without recompense —

## Verse 87

تَرْجِعُونَـهَٓا اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِق۪ينَ

TarjiAAoonaha in kuntum sadiqeen

You but sent it back, if you be truthful!

## Verse 88

فَاَمَّٓا اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّب۪ينَۙ

Faamma in kana minaalmuqarrabeen

Then if he be of those brought near:

## Verse 89

فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَع۪يمٍ

Farawhun warayhanun wajannatunaAAeem

Then rest, and plenty, and a garden of bliss.

## Verse 90

وَاَمَّٓا اِنْ كَانَ مِنْ اَصْحَابِ الْيَم۪ينِۙ

Waamma in kana min as-habialyameen

And if he be of the companions of the right:

## Verse 91

فَسَلَامٌ لَكَ مِنْ اَصْحَابِ الْيَم۪ينِ

Fasalamun laka min as-habialyameen

“Peace for thee, among the companions of the right!”

## Verse 92

وَاَمَّٓا اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّب۪ينَ الضَّٓالّ۪ينَۙ

Waamma in kana mina almukaththibeenaaddalleen

And if he be of the denying and the straying:

## Verse 93

فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَم۪يمٍۙ

Fanuzulun min hameem

A welcome of scalding water,

## Verse 94

وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَح۪يمٍۙ

Watasliyatu jaheem

And burning in Hell.

## Verse 95

اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَق۪ينِۚ

Inna hatha lahuwa haqqualyaqeen

This is the truth of certainty.

## Verse 96

فَسَبِّـحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظ۪يمِ

Fasabbih bismi rabbika alAAatheem

So give thou glory with the name of thy Lord, the Great!
