Surah Al-Qasas (The Stories) — سورة القصص - **Verse:** 58 / 88 · **Juz:** 20 · **Mushaf page:** 391 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-qasas/verse-58 ## Arabic وَكَمْ اَهْلَكْنَا مِنْ قَرْيَةٍ بَطِرَتْ مَع۪يشَتَهَاۚ فَتِلْكَ مَسَاكِنُهُمْ لَمْ تُسْكَنْ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ اِلَّا قَل۪يلاًۜ وَكُنَّا نَحْنُ الْوَارِث۪ينَ ## Transcription Wakam ahlakna min qaryatin batiratmaAAeeshataha fatilka masakinuhum lam tuskan minbaAAdihim illa qaleelan wakunna nahnu alwaritheen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley How many cities We have destroyed which lived in insolent ingratitude! There are their houses, never again inhabited after them, except a little. It was We who were their Heir. ### Progressive Muslims And how many a town have We destroyed for turning unappreciative of their lives. So here are their homes, nothing but uninhabited ruins after them, except a few. We were the inheritors. ### Shabbir Ahmed And how many a town We annihilated, which exulted in their life of ease and plenty! Such that most of their dwelling places have remain deserted after them. And it is We who were the inheritors. ### Muhammad Asad And how many a community that [once] exult­ed in its wanton wealth and ease of life have We destroyed, so that those dwelling-places of theirs – all but a few - have never been dwelt-in after them: for it is indeed We alone who shall remain when all else will have passed away! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And how many a community have We destroyed that was thankless for its means of livelihood! And yonder are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them save a little. And We, even We, were the inheritors. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary And how many a town did We destroy whose inhabitants exulted on account of their affluence. These are their dwellings in which very few dwelt after them. Eventually it is We Who inherited them.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This is the second answer to their excuse. It means to imply this: The worldly wealth and prosperity of which you are so proud and whose probable danger of loss makes you stick to falsehood and turn away from the truth. This was also possessed once by Aad and Thamud and Saba and the people of Lot. Then, did it save them from destruction? After all, a high standard of living is not the only aim in life that man should endeavor to pursue it regardless of every consideration for truth and falsehood, and refuse to accept the right way only because there was a risk of losing it if one did so. Do you have any guarantee that if you persisted in the errors and evils that ruined the prosperous peoples of the past, you would remain safe and never meet the doom that they met? ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab How many towns did We reduce to a useless form after Our grace was made to abound in them and they met it with dissatisfaction and ingratitude! There you can see how their dwellings were left desolate thereafter and destitute of inhabitants but of a few and We were the inheritors! ### Bijan Moeinian So many "safe" places I have destroyed in account of their inhabitants’ attitude when they became proud of their flourishing economy and turned into wicked. Visit their ruins; only a few of them are still inhabited. At last it is God who inherited the land [that He had given out of mercy to those ungrateful people.] ### Al-Hilali & Khan And how many a town (population) have We destroyed, which was thankless for its means of livelihood (disobeyed Allâh, and His Messengers, by doing evil deeds and crimes)! And those are their dwellings, which have not been inhabited after them except a little. And verily!
