Surah Al-Qasas (The Stories) — سورة القصص - **Verse:** 47 / 88 · **Juz:** 20 · **Mushaf page:** 390 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-qasas/verse-47 ## Arabic وَلَوْلَٓا اَنْ تُص۪يبَهُمْ مُص۪يبَةٌ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ اَيْد۪يهِمْ فَيَقُولُوا رَبَّـنَا لَوْلَٓا اَرْسَلْتَ اِلَيْنَا رَسُولاً فَنَتَّبِعَ اٰيَاتِكَ وَنَكُونَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِن۪ينَ ## Transcription Walawla an tuseebahum museebatunbima qaddamat aydeehim fayaqooloo rabbana lawlaarsalta ilayna rasoolan fanattabiAAa ayatikawanakoona mina almu/mineen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley If a disaster had struck them because of what they had already done, they would have said, ‘Our Lord, why did You not send us a Messenger so that we could have followed Your Signs and been muminun?’ ### Progressive Muslims Thus, if any disaster strikes them as a consequence of their own deeds they cannot Say: "Our Lord, if only You sent a messenger to us, so that we would follow Your revelations, and we would be of the believers. " ### Shabbir Ahmed Otherwise, if disaster struck them as a result of their own actions, they might say, "Our Lord! Why did You not send a Messenger to us, that we might have followed Your Revelations and been of the believers?" ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And were it not that calamity should befall them because of what their hands sent ahead[...]. Then will they say: “Our Lord: oh, that Thou hadst but sent for us a messenger, then would we have followed Thy proofs and been among the believers!” ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Thus, if any disaster strikes them as a consequence of their own deeds they cannot Say: "Our Lord, if only You sent a messenger to us, so that we would follow Your revelations, and we would be of the believers." ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Thus, they cannot say, when a disaster strikes them as a consequence of their own deeds, "Our Lord, had You sent a messenger to us, we would have followed Your revelations, and would have been believers." ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira And in case disaster comes upon them for what they have done themselves, they should say: "O Lord, why did You not send an apostle to us that we should have followed Your commands, and been with those who are believers;" ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands put forth [of sins] and they would say, "Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses and been among the believers?". .. ### Muhammad Asad and [We have sent thee] lest they say [on Judg­ment Day], when disaster befalls them as an outcome of what their own hands have wrought, "O our Sus­tainer, if only Thou had sent an apostle unto us, we would have followed Thy messages, and would have been among those who believe!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall Otherwise, if disaster should afflict them because of that which their own hands have sent before (them), they might say: Our Lord! Why sentest Thou no messenger unto us, that we might have followed Thy revelations and been of the believers? ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary (We did so) lest a calamity might seize them because of the misdeeds they committed whereafter they would say: "Our Lord, why did you not send a Messenger to us that we follow Your revelation and become among those who believe?"[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This very thing has been presented at several places in the Quran as the reason for sending the messengers, but it will not be correct to conclude from this that a messenger should be sent on every occasion at every place for this purpose. As long as the message of a prophet remains intact in the world and the means of conveying it to others exist, there is no need for a new prophet, unless need arises to supplement the previous message, or to supplant it by a new message, Nevertheless, when the teachings of the prophets are forgotten, or become mixed up with errors and deviations and can no longer be relied upon as means of guidance, then the people do get a chance to make the excuse that there existed no arrangement whatsoever to make them aware of the distinction between the truth and the untruth and guide them to the right way: so they could not be guided aright. To meet such an excuse, Allah sends the prophets in such conditions so that any one who follows a wrong way after that may himself be held responsible for his going astray. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Had We not sent you O Muhammad to the people in general and to the Pagans in particular to serve as a spectacle and a warning they would have said when befallen with a misfortune as a reaction to what their wrongful and unclean hands have committed: "O Allah, our Creator, if only You had sent to us a Messenger to guide us to Your path in which Your divine signs shine like beacons inciting us to lift to You our inward sight" ### Bijan Moeinian Now if, in account of their own deeds, a misfortune strikes the people, they will not have an excuse to say: "Our Lord, If you had sent a Prophet to us, we would have certainly had followed Your Revelations and would have been among the believers. " ### Al-Hilali & Khan And if (We had) not (sent you to the people of Makkah) - in case a calamity should seize them for (the deeds) that their hands have sent forth, they would have said: "Our Lord! Why did You not send us a Messenger? We would then have followed Your Ayât (Verses of the Qur’ân) and would have been among the believers." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali If (We had) not (sent thee to the Quraish),- in case a calamity should seize them for (the deeds) that their hands have sent forth, they might say: "Our Lord! why didst Thou not sent us a messenger? We should then have followed Thy Signs and been amongst those who believe!" ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Also so they would not say, if struck by an affliction for what their hands have done: "Our Lord! Aziz Nor were you by the side of the mountain when We called; yet are you sent as a mercy from your Lord, that you may warn a people to whom no Warner has come before you that per chance (or possibly) they may be give heed. ### Mahmoud Ghali And had it not been (that you are sent to them), an affliction would afflict them for what their hands have forwarded, then they might say, "Our Lord, had You sent a Messenger to us, then we should have closely followed Your signs and been among the believers.
