Surah Al-Qasas (The Stories) — سورة القصص - **Verse:** 28 / 88 · **Juz:** 20 · **Mushaf page:** 387 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-qasas/verse-28 ## Arabic قَالَ ذٰلِكَ بَيْن۪ي وَبَيْنَكَۜ اَيَّمَا الْاَجَلَيْنِ قَضَيْتُ فَلَا عُدْوَانَ عَلَيَّۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَلٰى مَا نَقُولُ وَك۪يلٌ۟ ## Transcription Qala thalika baynee wabaynakaayyama al-ajalayni qadaytu fala AAudwanaAAalayya wallahu AAala ma naqooluwakeel ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He said, ‘That is agreed between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there should be no bad feeling towards me. Allah is Guardian over what we say.’ ### Progressive Muslims He said: "It is then an agreement between me and you. Whichever period I fulfill, you will not be averse to either one. And God is entrusted over what we said." ### Shabbir Ahmed He (Moses) said, "Be that the agreement between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there will be no injustice to me. And Allah be Witness to all that we say." Whichever term I fulfil, no injustice will be done to me. God is witness to our agreement." ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) [Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allah, over what we say, is Witness." ### Muhammad Asad Answered [Moses]: "Thus shall it be between me and thee! Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, let there be no ill will against me. And God be witness to all that we say!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall He said: That (is settled) between thee and me. Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there will be no injustice to me, and Allah is Surety over what we say. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Moses replied: "So that is agreed between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfil, I trust that I shall not be wronged. Allah is a witness over the covenant we are committing ourselves to."[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] Some people have taken this conversation between the Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and the girl’s father for a contract of marriage, and have started the dispute whether service under the father can be looked upon as a dower of the daughters marriage, and whether such external conditions can be laid down for the marriage contract; whereas the words of the verses under discussion themselves indicate this was not the contract of marriage but the initial proposal that is generally made before the execution of the marriage contract itself. After all, how can this be taken for a contract of marriage when it had not yet been decided which of the girls was to be given away in marriage. The purport of the conversation was that the girl’s father said, "I am prepared to marry one of my daughters to you provided that you promise that you will stay in my house for eight to ten years and help me in performing household chores, for I am old and have no son either, who could manage my properties. I have only daughters whom I have to send to perform outdoor duties. I want you to strengthen me as my would be son in law. If you are willing to accept this responsibility, and do not intend to take away your wife soon after marriage, I will marry one of my daughters to you." The Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) was himself in search of a shelter at that time, so he accepted the proposal. Evidently, it was a sort of contract that had been agreed upon between the two parties before the marriage. After this the actual marriage must have taken place according to the law and the dower also settled. There could be no question of including the condition of service in the marriage bond itself. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "This", he added, "is an agreement between me and you, whichever of the two terms be fulfilled, there shall be no injustice or ill-will to me and Allah is a Witness to our binding agreement". ### Bijan Moeinian Moses replied: "Let us call it an agreement between you and me. When I finish eight or ten years of services to you, it will not be just from you to ask for more as God is witness for our agreement." ### Al-Hilali & Khan He [Mûsâ (Moses)] said: "That (is settled) between me and you: whichever of the two terms I fulfil, there will be no injustice to me, and Allâh is Surety over what we say." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali He said: "Be that (the agreement) between me and thee: whichever of the two terms I fulfil, let there be no ill-will to me. Be Allah a witness to what we say." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Moses responded, "˹Then˺ it is ˹settled˺ between you and I. Whichever term I fulfill, there will be no ˹further˺ obligation on me. And Allah is a Witness to what we say." ### Taqi Usmani He (Mūsā) said, "This is (done) between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there should be no excess against me, and Allah is witness to what we are saying." ### Abdul Haleem Moses said, ‘Let that be the agreement between us- whichever of the two terms I fulfil, let there be no injustice to me- God is witness to what we say.’ ### Arthur John Arberry Said he, 'So let it be between me and thee. Whichever of the two' terms I fulfil, it shall be no Injustice to me; and God is guardian of what we say. ### E. Aziz Said he, "Verily, I desire to marry you to one of these daughters of mine, on condition that you do serve me for hire eight years; and if you shall fulfil ten it is of your own accord; for I desire not to make it hard for you. Allah willing, you will find me of the righteous." ### Mahmoud Ghali He (Mûsa) (Moses) said, "That is between me and you. Whichever (one) of the two terms I accomplish, then there shall be no hostility against me; and Allah is Ever-Trusted Trustee over what we say." ### George Sale Moses answered, let this be the covenant between me and thee: Whichsoever of the two terms I shall fulfil, let it be no crime in me if I then quit thy service; and God is witness of that which we say. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed He (Musa) said: "Let that be (the agreement) between me and you: Whichever of the two duration's I fulfill, let there be no bad feelings for me. Let Allah be a witness to what we say." ### Amatul Rahman Omar (Moses) said, (accepting the proposal), `This is (a covenant) between us; whichever of the two terms I complete, I will be free from obligation and there shall be no injustice to me, and Allâh is witness over what we have agreed.
