Surah Al-Qalam (The Pen) — سورة القلم - **Verse:** 43 / 52 · **Juz:** 29 · **Mushaf page:** 565 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-qalam/verse-43 ## Arabic خَاشِعَةً اَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۜ وَقَدْ كَانُوا يُدْعَوْنَ اِلَى السُّجُودِ وَهُمْ سَالِمُونَ ## Transcription KhashiAAatan absaruhumtarhaquhum thillatun waqad kanoo yudAAawna ilaassujoodi wahum salimoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Their eyes will be downcast, darkened by debasement; for they were called on to prostrate when they were in full possession of their faculties. ### Progressive Muslims With their eyes subdued, humiliation will cover them. They were invited to prostrate when they were whole and able. ### Shabbir Ahmed Their eyes drooping, humiliation will overwhelm them! And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound. ### Muhammad Asad downcast will be their eyes, with ignominy overwhelming them - seeing that they had been called upon [in vain] to prostrate themselves [before Him] while they were yet sound [and alive]. ### Marmaduke Pickthall With eyes downcast, abasement stupefying them. And they had been summoned to prostrate themselves while they were yet unhurt. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Their eyes shall be downcast and ignominy shall overwhelm them. For when they were safe and sound, they were summoned to prostrate themselves, (and they refused).[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] It means: On the Resurrection Day it will be openly and publicly demonstrated as to who in the world had actually worshiped Allah and who was disinclined to do so. For this purpose the people will be called upon to prostrate themselves before Allah. Then, those who had been sincerely worshiping Allah in the world would prostrate themselves, and those who had declined to bow before Him in the world would be unable to do so. It will become impossible for them to put up a false show of being worshipers.
