# 83. Surah Al-Mutaffifin

_In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful._

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

## Verse 1

وَيْلٌ لِلْمُطَفِّف۪ينَۙ

Waylun lilmutaffifeen

Woe to the unfair traders: —

## Verse 2

اَلَّذ۪ينَ اِذَا ا‌كْتَالُوا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَۘ

Allatheena itha iktalooAAala annasi yastawfoon

Those who, when they take measure from men, take in full,

## Verse 3

وَاِذَا كَالُوهُمْ اَوْ وَزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَۜ

Wa-itha kaloohum aw wazanoohumyukhsiroon

But when they give them by measure or give them by weight, cause loss.

## Verse 4

اَلَا يَظُنُّ اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ اَنَّهُمْ مَبْعُوثُونَۙ

Ala yathunnu ola-ikaannahum mabAAoothoon

Do those not think that they will be raised

## Verse 5

لِيَوْمٍ عَظ۪يمٍۙ

Liyawmin AAatheem

To a tremendous day: —

## Verse 6

يَوْمَ يَقُومُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعَالَم۪ينَۜ

Yawma yaqoomu annasu lirabbialAAalameen

A day men will stand before the Lord of All Creation?

## Verse 7

كَلَّٓا اِنَّ كِتَابَ الْفُجَّارِ لَف۪ي سِجّ۪ينٍۜ

Kalla inna kitaba alfujjarilafee sijjeen

No, indeed! The writ of the licentious is in Sijjīn.

## Verse 8

وَمَٓا اَدْرٰيكَ مَا سِجّ۪ينٌۜ

Wama adraka ma sijjeen

And what will convey to thee what Sijjīn is?

## Verse 9

كِتَابٌ مَرْقُومٌۜ

Kitabun marqoom

A writ inscribed!

## Verse 10

وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّب۪ينَۙ

Waylun yawma-ithin lilmukaththibeen

Woe, that day, to the deniers,

## Verse 11

اَلَّذ۪ينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدّ۪ينِۜ

Allatheena yukaththiboonabiyawmi addeen

Those who deny the Day of Judgment!

## Verse 12

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِه۪ٓ اِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ اَث۪يمٍۙ

Wama yukaththibu bihi illakullu muAAtadin atheem

And none denies it save every sinful transgressor.

## Verse 13

اِذَا تُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِ اٰيَاتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاط۪يرُ الْاَوَّل۪ينَۜ

Itha tutla AAalayhi ayatunaqala asateeru al-awwaleen

When Our proofs are recited to him, he says: “Legends of the former peoples.”

## Verse 14

كَلَّا بَلْ۔ رَانَ عَلٰى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

Kalla bal rana AAalaquloobihim ma kanoo yaksiboon

No, indeed! The truth is, what they earned conquered their hearts.

## Verse 15

كَلَّٓا اِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَمَحْجُوبُونَۜ

Kalla innahum AAan rabbihim yawma-ithinlamahjooboon

No, indeed! From their Lord, that day, will they be veiled;

## Verse 16

ثُمَّ اِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا الْجَح۪يمِۜ

Thumma innahum lasaloo aljaheem

Then will they burn in Hell;

## Verse 17

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هٰذَا الَّذ۪ي كُنْتُمْ بِه۪ تُكَذِّبُونَۜ

Thumma yuqalu hatha allatheekuntum bihi tukaththiboon

Then will it be said: “This is that which you denied.”

## Verse 18

كَلَّٓا اِنَّ كِتَابَ الْاَبْرَارِ لَف۪ي عِلِّيّ۪ينَۜ

Kalla inna kitaba al-abrarilafee AAilliyyeen

No, indeed! The writ of the virtuous is in ʿIlliyyūn.

## Verse 19

وَمَٓا اَدْرٰيكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَۜ

Wama adraka maAAilliyyoon

And what will convey to thee what ʿIlliyyūn is?

## Verse 20

كِتَابٌ مَرْقُومٌۙ

Kitabun marqoom

A writ inscribed

## Verse 21

يَشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُونَۜ

Yashhaduhu almuqarraboon

To which bear witness those brought near!

## Verse 22

اِنَّ الْاَبْرَارَ لَف۪ي نَع۪يمٍۙ

Inna al-abrara lafee naAAeem

The virtuous will be in bliss,

## Verse 23

عَلَى الْاَرَٓائِكِ يَنْظُرُونَۙ

AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroon

Upon couches looking on.

## Verse 24

تَعْرِفُ ف۪ي وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّع۪يمِۚ

TaAArifu fee wujoohihim nadrata annaAAeem

Thou wilt recognise in their faces the radiance of bliss.

## Verse 25

يُسْقَوْنَ مِنْ رَح۪يقٍ مَخْتُومٍۙ

Yusqawna min raheeqin makhtoom

They will be given to drink of a wine sealed,

## Verse 26

خِتَامُهُ مِسْكٌۜ وَف۪ي ذٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُونَۜ

Khitamuhu miskun wafee thalikafalyatanafasi almutanafisoon

Whose seal is musk — and for that let aspire those who aspire —

## Verse 27

وَمِزَاجُهُ مِنْ تَسْن۪يمٍۙ

Wamizajuhu min tasneem

And its mixture of Tasnīm:

## Verse 28

عَيْناً يَشْرَبُ بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُونَۜ

AAaynan yashrabu biha almuqarraboon

A spring whereat drink those brought near.

## Verse 29

اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ اَجْرَمُوا كَانُوا مِنَ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَۘ

Inna allatheena ajramoo kanoomina allatheena amanoo yadhakoon

Those who were lawbreakers laughed at those who heeded warning,

## Verse 30

وَاِذَا مَرُّوا بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَۘ

Wa-itha marroo bihim yataghamazoon

And when they passed by them, they winked at one another.

## Verse 31

وَاِذَا انْقَلَـبُٓوا اِلٰٓى اَهْلِهِمُ انْقَلَبُوا فَكِه۪ينَۘ

Wa-itha inqalaboo ila ahlihimuinqalaboo fakiheen

And when they returned to their people, they returned delighting.

## Verse 32

وَاِذَا رَاَوْهُمْ قَالُٓوا اِنَّ هٰٓؤُ۬لَٓاءِ لَضَٓالُّونَۙ

Wa-itha raawhum qaloo inna haola-iladalloon

And when they saw them, they said: “These have gone astray.”

## Verse 33

وَمَٓا اُرْسِلُوا عَلَيْهِمْ حَافِظ۪ينَۜ

Wama orsiloo AAalayhim hafitheen

But they were not sent as custodians over them.

## Verse 34

فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَۙ

Falyawma allatheena amanoomina alkuffari yadhakoon

And this day those who heed warning laugh at the atheists,

## Verse 35

عَلَى الْاَرَٓائِكِۙ يَنْظُرُونَۜ

AAala al-ara-iki yanthuroon

Upon couches looking on.

## Verse 36

هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا يَفْعَلُونَ

Hal thuwwiba alkuffaru ma kanooyafAAaloon

Are not the atheists requited for what they did?
