Surah Al-Munafiqun (The Hypocrites) — سورة المنافقون - **Verse:** 2 / 11 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 553 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-munafiqun/verse-2 ## Arabic اِتَّخَذُٓوا اَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِۜ اِنَّهُمْ سَٓاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ ## Transcription Ittakhathoo aymanahum junnatanfasaddoo AAan sabeeli Allahi innahum saa makanoo yaAAmaloon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They have made their oaths into a cloak and barred the Way of Allah. What they have done is truly evil. ### Progressive Muslims They have chosen their oath as a deceit, thus they repel from the path of God. Miserable indeed is what they do. ### Shabbir Ahmed They make their oaths and proclamation of Faith a cover so that they may bar others from the Path of Allah. Miserable indeed is what they do. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation They have taken their oaths as a cover, then they turned away from the path of God — evil is what they did — ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation They have chosen their oath as a deceit, thus they repel from the path of God. Miserable indeed is what they do. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Under the guise of their apparent faith, they repel the people from the path of GOD. Miserable indeed is what they do. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They have made their oaths a shield in order to obstruct others from the way of God. It is certainly evil what they do. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing. ### Muhammad Asad They have made their oaths a cover [for their falseness], and thus they turn others away from the Path of God. Evil indeed is all that they are wont to do: ### Marmaduke Pickthall They make their faith a pretext so that they may turn (men) from the way of Allah. Verily evil is that which they are wont to do, ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They shelter behind their oath,[1] and thus hinder their own selves and others from the Path of Allah.[2] Evil indeed is what they do. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, they use the oaths that they swear to convince others of their Islam and faith as a shield to save themselves from the wrath of the Muslims so that they do not treat them as they treat their open enemies. - [2] These oaths may imply the oaths which they usually swear to convince others of their faith as well as those which they swore when they were caught committing some hypocritical act, and also those oaths which Abdullah bin Ubayy had sworn to contradict the report given by Zaid bin Arqam. Besides these, there is another probability that Allah might have regarded this statement of theirs as an oath: We bear witness that you are Allah’s Messenger. This last probability has given rise to a dispute among the jurists, namely: If a person states something with the words: I bear witness, will it be regarded as an oath or not? Imam Abu Hanifah and his companions (except Imam Zufar), Imam Sufyan Thauri and Imam Auzai regard it as an oath (Yamin in the Shariah terminology). Imam Zufar says that it is not an oath. Two sayings from Imam Malik have been reported in this connection: First, that it is an oath absolutely, and second, that if while saying: I bear witness, his intention was to say: My God, I bear witness, or I bear witness before God, it would be a statement on oath, otherwise not. Imam Shafei says: Even if the person says the words: I bear witness before God. it would not be a statement made on oath, unless he uttered these words with the intention of swearing an oath, (AI-Jassas, Ahkam al- Quran; Ibn alArabi, Ahkam al-Quran). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They use their oaths to hide, under the garb of truth, their extreme vanity Many among the believers were deceived, and the hypocrite's policy achieved its necessary ends. In consequence they have blocked the path of Allah, the path of righteousness, and persistently opposed the progress in purpose and in action. Evil indeed is the way they have conducted themselves in life. ### Bijan Moeinian They hide their evil intentions under the disguise of Islam. How evil of them to try to turn people away from the path of their Lord. ### Al-Hilali & Khan They have made their oaths a screen (for their hypocrisy). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allâh. Verily, evil is what they used to do. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah: truly evil are their deeds. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They have made their ˹false˺ oaths as a shield, hindering ˹others˺ from the Way of Allah. Evil indeed is what they do! ### Taqi Usmani They have made their oaths a shield, and thus they have prevented (others) from the way of Allah. Surely evil is what they have been doing. ### Abdul Haleem they use their oaths as a cover and so bar others from God’s way: what they have been doing is truly evil–– ### Arthur John Arberry They have taken their oaths as a covering, then they have barred from the way of God. Surely they -- evil are the things they have been doing. ### E. Henry Palmer They take their faith for a cloak, and then they turn folks from God's way: - evil is that which they have done! ### Hamid S. Aziz They make their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds), and thus turn away from Allah's way; surely evil is that which they do. ### Mahmoud Ghali They have taken to themselves their oaths as a pretext: so they have barred from the way of Allah. Surely odious is whatever they were doing. ### George Sale They have taken their oaths for a protection, and they turn others aside from the way of God: It is surely evil which they do. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed They have made their oaths a way (to hide what they really are and) like this they stop (men) from the Path of Allah: Truly, their deeds are evil. ### Amatul Rahman Omar They take shelter behind their oaths (to hide their evil designs). Thus they keep people back from the way of Allâh. Surely, evil is the practice they follow. ### Ali Quli Qarai They make a shield of their oaths, and bar from the way of Allah. Allah da biliyor ki, sen şüphesiz O'nun Resulüsün! Bununla beraber Allah şahitlik ediyor ki, doğrusu münafıklar katiyyen yalancıdırlar.
