Surah Al-Mumtahanah (She that is to be examined) — سورة الممتحنة - **Verse:** 8 / 13 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 549 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-mumtahanah/verse-8 ## Arabic لَا يَنْهٰيكُمُ اللّٰهُ عَنِ الَّذ۪ينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدّ۪ينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ اَنْ تَـبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُٓوا اِلَيْهِمْۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُحِبُّ الْمُقْسِط۪ينَ ## Transcription La yanhakumu AllahuAAani allatheena lam yuqatilookum fee addeeniwalam yukhrijookum min diyarikum an tabarroohum watuqsitooilayhim inna Allaha yuhibbu almuqsiteen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Allah does not forbid you from being good to those who have not fought you in the deen or driven you from your homes, or from being just towards them. Allah loves those who are just. ### Progressive Muslims God does not forbid you from those who have not fought you because of your system, nor drove you out of your homes, that you deal kindly and equitably with them. For God loves the equitable. ### Shabbir Ahmed Allah does not forbid you from being kind, and fully equitable to those who do not fight you on account of Religion, and do not evict you from your homelands. Behold, Allah loves those who lead a just, balanced life. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation God forbids you not — with those who have neither fought you in doctrine, nor turned you out of your homes — that you should be virtuous with them and equitable towards them; God loves the equitable. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation God does not prohibit you from those who have not fought you because of your system, nor drove you out of your homes, that you deal kindly and equitably with them. You may befriend them and be equitable towards them. GOD loves the equitable. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira God does not forbid you from being kind and acting justly towards those who did not fight over faith with you, nor expelled you from your homes. God indeed loves those who are just. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. ### Muhammad Asad As for such [of the unbelievers] as do not fight against you on account of [your] faith, and neither drive you forth from your homelands, God does not forbid you to show them kindness and to behave towards them with full equity: for, verily, God loves those who act equitably. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Allah forbiddeth you not those who warred not against you on account of religion and drove you not out from your homes, that ye should show them kindness and deal justly with them. Lo! Allah loveth the just dealers. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Allah does not forbid that you be kind and just to those who did not fight against you on account of religion, nor drove you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are equitable.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] Here a doubt may arise in the minds. It is all right to treat the disbelievers, who are not hostile, kindly, but should only they be treated unjustly? And should the disbelievers, who arc hostile, be treated unjustly? The answer is that in this context, the word justice, in fact, has been used in a special sense. It means: Justice demands that you should not be hostile to those who are not hostile to you, for it is not justice to treat the enemy and the nonenemy alike. You have every right to adopt a stern attitude towards those who persecuted you for embracing Islam and compelled you to leave your homes and pursued you even after your expulsion. But as for those who were not partners in persecuting you, you should treat them well and should fulfill the right they have on you because of blood and other relationships. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Allah did not interdict your considerateness in intercourse with those who did not wage war against your religion nor did they drive you out and oust you of your homes. To the contrary, He expects you to be courteous to them and to treat them with tenderness and equity and to help the needy among them and those who are weak; Allah likes those who are courteous and crowned with equity. ### Bijan Moeinian As far as those disbelievers who have not fought with you in account of your religion neither have driven you out of your homes, God does not mind if you deal with them kindly and with justice. God loves just people. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Allâh does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion nor drove you out of your homes. Verily, Allâh loves those who deal with equity. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loveth those who are just. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Allah does not forbid you from dealing kindly and fairly with those who have neither fought nor driven you out of your homes. Surely Allah loves those who are fair. ### Taqi Usmani Allah does not forbid you as regards those who did not fight you on account of faith, and did not expel you from your homes, that you do good to them, and deal justly with them. Surely Allah loves those who maintain justice. ### Abdul Haleem and He does not forbid you to deal kindly and justly with anyone who has not fought you for your faith or driven you out of your homes: God loves the just. ### Arthur John Arberry God forbids you not, as regards those who have not fought you in religion's cause, nor expelled you from your habitations, that you should be kindly to them, and act justly towards them; surely God loves the just. ### E. Henry Palmer God forbids you not respecting those who have not fought against you for religion's sake, and who have not driven you forth from your homes, that ye should act righteously and justly towards them; verily, God loves the just! ### Hamid S. Aziz Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on account of your religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers of justice. ### Mahmoud Ghali Allah does not forbid you (as regards) the ones who have not fought you on account of the religion and have not driven you out of your residences that you should be benign to them and be equitable towards them; surely Allah loves the equitable. ### George Sale As to those who have not born arms against you on account of religion, nor turned you out of your dwellings, God forbideth you not to deal kindly with them, and to behave justly towards them; for God loveth those who act justly. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Allah does not forbid you to act justly and kindly with those (for friendship) who do not fight with you regarding (your) faith (of Islam), and do not drive you out of your homes.
