Surah Al-Mu'minun (The Believers) — سورة المؤمنون - **Verse:** 33 / 118 · **Juz:** 18 · **Mushaf page:** 343 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-muminun/verse-33 ## Arabic وَقَالَ الْمَلَأُ مِنْ قَوْمِهِ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِلِقَٓاءِ الْاٰخِرَةِ وَاَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ فِي الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَاۙ مَا هٰذَٓا اِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْۙ يَأْكُلُ مِمَّا تَأْكُلُونَ مِنْهُ وَيَشْرَبُ مِمَّا تَشْرَبُونَ ## Transcription Waqala almalao min qawmihi allatheenakafaroo wakaththaboo biliqa-i al-akhiratiwaatrafnahum fee alhayati addunyama hatha illa basharun mithlukum ya/kulumimma ta/kuloona minhu wayashrabu mimma tashraboon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley The ruling circle of his people – those who were kafir and denied the encounter of the Next World and whom We had given opulence in this world – said, ‘This is nothing but a human being like yourselves. who eats what you eat and drinks what you drink. ### Progressive Muslims And the leaders from amongst his people who rejected and denied the meeting of the Hereafter; and We indulged them in this worldly life; said: "What is this but a human like you He eats from what you eat and he drinks from what you drink. " ### Shabbir Ahmed (And invariably) it was their leaders who refused to acknowledge the Truth and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter. Simply because We had granted them ease and plenty in their worldly life. He eats of that from which you eat and drinks of what you drink. ### Muhammad Asad And [every time] the great ones among his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth and gave the lie to the announcement of a life to come - [simply] because We had granted them ease and plenty in [their] worldly life, and they had become corrupted by it [every time] they would say: "This [man] is nothing hut a mortal like yourselves, eating of what you eat, and drinking of what you drink: ### Marmaduke Pickthall And the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved and denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had made soft in the life of the world, said: This is only a mortal like you, who eateth of that whereof ye eat and drinketh of that ye drink. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The notables among his people who had refused to believe and who denied the meeting of the Hereafter, and those whom We had endowed with ease and comfort in this life,[1] cried out: "This is no other than a mortal like yourselves who eats what you eat and drinks what you drink. _Footnotes_ - [1] It should be noted that all those people who opposed the Messengers had three common characteristics: (1) They were the chiefs of their people. (2) They denied life in the Hereafter. (3) They were prosperous in the worldly life. Obviously, they loved the life of this world and could never conceive that their way of life, which had made them chiefs and brought prosperity, could ever be wrong. Therefore they opposed their Messengers, who took away their peace of mind, by preaching that there was a life-after-death and they shall have to render an account to Allah of what they did in this world. And this was exactly what was happening at Makkah. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab The leaders among his people who denied Allah and rejected the idea of having audience of Him in Day of Judgement said: " But he is only a human like yourselves. He eats the same food you eat and drinks of what you drink." thereby denying what We bestowed on them of what ministered to their enjoyment and content in life. ### Bijan Moeinian A disbeliever leader of them who had rejected the Hereafter (in spite of having received a good portion in this world) said: "This guy is a human being like yourselves. He eats the same thing that you eat and drinks the same thing that you drink!" ### Al-Hilali & Khan And the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and whom We had given the luxuries and comforts of this life, said: "He is no more than a human being like you, he eats of that which you eat, and drinks of what you drink. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And the chiefs of his people, who disbelieved and denied the Meeting in the Hereafter, and on whom We had bestowed the good things of this life, said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: he eats of that of which ye eat, and drinks of what ye drink. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran But the chiefs of his people—who disbelieved, denied the meeting ˹with Allah˺ in the Hereafter, and were spoiled by the worldly luxuries We had provided for them—said ˹to the masses˺, "This is only a human like you. Sizin yediklerinizden yiyor, içdiklerinizden içiyor". ### İbni Kesir Onun kavminden; kendilerine dünya hayatında rızık verdiğimiz halde küfr ederek ahirete kavuşmayı yalanlayan ileri gelenler dediler ki: Bu, sizin gibi bir beşerden başka bir şey değildir.
