Surah Al-Mu'minun (The Believers) — سورة المؤمنون - **Verse:** 24 / 118 · **Juz:** 18 · **Mushaf page:** 342 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-muminun/verse-24 ## Arabic فَقَالَ الْمَلَؤُا الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ قَوْمِه۪ مَا هٰذَٓا اِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْۙ يُر۪يدُ اَنْ يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْۜ وَلَوْ شَٓاءَ اللّٰهُ لَاَنْزَلَ مَلٰٓئِكَةًۚ مَا سَمِعْنَا بِهٰذَا ف۪ٓي اٰبَٓائِنَا الْاَوَّل۪ينَۚ ## Transcription Faqala almalao allatheenakafaroo min qawmihi ma hatha illa basharunmithlukum yureedu an yatafaddala AAalaykum walaw shaaAllahu laanzala mala-ikatan ma samiAAnabihatha fee aba-ina al-awwaleen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley The ruling circle of those of his people who were kafir said, ‘This is nothing but a human being like yourselves who simply wants to gain ascendancy over you. If Allah had wanted He would have sent angels down. We never heard of anything like this among our ancestors, the earlier peoples. ### Progressive Muslims But the leaders who rejected from among his people said: "What is this but a human like you He wants to make himself better than you! And if it was indeed God's will, He would have sent down Angels. We did not hear such a thing among our fathers of old." ### Shabbir Ahmed But the leaders among his community who refused to acknowledge the Truth, said, "This is only a man like you who wants to become prominent among you. God could have sent angels if He willed (to convey a message to us). We never heard this from our forefathers. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Then said the eminent ones who disbelieved among his people: “This is only a mortal like you, desiring to take precedence over you. And had God willed, He would have sent down angels. He wishes to acquire ascendancy over you. If God had willed He would have sent down angels. We never heard this from our elders. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) But the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to take precedence over you; and if Allah had willed [to send a messenger], He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers. ### Muhammad Asad But the great ones among his people, who refused to acknowledge the truth, replied: "This [man] is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who wants to make himself superior to you! For, if God had willed [to convey a message unto us], He would surely have sent down angels; [moreover,] we have never heard [any­thing like] this from our forebears of old! ### Marmaduke Pickthall But the chieftains of his folk, who disbelieved, said: This is only a mortal like you who would make himself superior to you. Had Allah willed, He surely could have sent down angels. We heard not of this in the case of our fathers of old. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary But the notables among his people had refused to believe, and said: "This is none other than a mortal like yourselves[1] who desires to attain superiority over you.[2] Had Allah wanted (to send any Messengers) He would have sent down angels.[3] We have heard nothing like this in the time of our forebears of old (that humans were sent as Messengers). _Footnotes_ - [1] There has been a common deviation that a human being cannot be a Prophet, and a Prophet cannot be a human being. That is why the Quran has refuted this wrong conception over and over again, and has stated forcefully that all the Prophets were human beings and that a human being only could be sent as a Prophet to human beings. Their opponents always accused them of exploiting religion to gain domination in the land. Prophets Moses, Aaron and Jesus were accused of the same and so was Muhammad (peace be upon them all). So much so that the disbelievers of Makkah offered to make the Prophet (peace be upon him) their king, if he gave up his message. - [3] As a matter of fact, the people who exhaust themselves in pursuit of worldly benefits and gains cannot believe that somebody in this world could also exert himself sincerely and selflessly for the sake of human welfare. They regard deceptive slogans, which they raise to capture power, and false promises, which they make day and night to bring about reforms as natural. They think that sincerity and selflessness can be employed only to deceive people and these cannot be put to any better use. That is why the epithet of power hungry for the reformers in all ages has been used by those already in power as if their own power and domination in the land was their birth right, and they were in no way blame worthy for struggling for it and achieving it. (For further explanation, see (E.N. 36 )below) ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab But the leaders of infidelity among his people exclaimed: "He is only a human like yourselves" They added "he simply wishes to take precedence of you and to claim supereminence for holiness and high virtues". "And had Allah willed", they added, "He would have sent down angels to serve as His Messengers." "We never heard of such a notion voiced by our ancestors" ### Bijan Moeinian The leaders of the disbelievers said: "This guy is a human being like yourselves. His only intention is to become your ruler. Had God willed, He would have sent the angels down. We have never heard none senses like this from our forefathers." ### Al-Hilali & Khan But the chiefs of his people who disbelieved said: "He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you. Had Allâh willed, He surely could have sent down angels. Never did we hear such a thing among our fathers of old. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The chiefs of the Unbelievers among his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves: his wish is to assert his superiority over you: if Allah had wished (to send messengers), He could have sent down angels; never did we hear such a thing (as he says), among our ancestors of old." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran But the disbelieving chiefs of his people said ˹to the masses˺, "This is only a human like you, who wants to be superior to you. Had Allah willed, He could have easily sent down angels ˹instead˺. We have never heard of this in ˹the history of˺ our forefathers. ### Taqi Usmani So, said the disbelieving chiefs from among his nation, "This (man) is nothing but a human being like you. He wishes to impose his superiority over you. Had Allah willed, He would have sent down angels (instead of him). We have not heard of such a thing among our forefathers. ### Abdul Haleem But the leading disbelievers among his people said, ‘He is merely a mortal like you, trying to gain some superiority over you. God would have sent down angels if He had wished; besides, we never heard of anything like this from our forefathers. ### Arthur John Arberry Said the Council of the unbelievers of his people, 'This is naught but a mortal like yourselves, who desires to gain superiority over you. And if God willed, He would have sent down angels. We never heard of this among, our fathers, the ancients. ### E. Henry Palmer Said the chiefs of those who misbelieved among his people, 'This is nothing but a mortal like yourselves who wishes to have preference over you, and had God pleased He would have sent angels; we have not heard of this amongst our fathers of yore: ### Hamid S. Aziz We sent Noah unto his people, and he said, "O my people! Serve Allah, you have no God but Him; do you then not fear (evil)?" ### Mahmoud Ghali Then said the chiefs who disbelieved among his people, "In no way is this anything except a mortal like yourselves, who would like to be graced with (superiority) (Literally: assume graciousness) over you. And if Allah had (so) decided, He would indeed have sent down Angels. In no way did we hear of this among our earliest fathers. ### George Sale And the chiefs of his people, who believed not, said, this is no other than a man, as ye are: He seeketh to raise himself to a superiority over you. If God had pleased to have sent a messenger unto you, He would surely have sent angels: We have not heard this of our forefathers. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed The leaders of the disbelievers from his people said: "He is no more than a man like yourselves; His wish is to make his superiority over you: If Allah had wished, He could have sent down angels: We never heard any such thing (like he says), from our forefathers of the old. " ### Amatul Rahman Omar But the chiefs of those who disbelieved from among his people said, `He is nothing but a human being like yourselves, (only) he seeks to assert (his) superiority over you. And if Allâh had so willed He could have certainly sent down angels (with him). Biz eski atalarımız içinde bunu işitmedik. ### Gültekin Onan Bunun üzerine, kavminden küfreden önde gelenler dediler ki: "Bu, sizin benzeriniz olan bir beşerden başkası değildir. Size karşı üstünlük elde etmek istiyor. Eğer Tanrı (öne sürdüklerini) dilemiş olsaydı, muhakkak melekler indirirdi. Hem biz geçmiş atalarımızdan da bunu işitmiş değiliz." ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Bunun üzerine kavminden ileri gelen kafir bir güruh (şöyle) dedi: "Bu, sizin gibi bir insandan başkası değildir. Size karşı şereflenmek, üstünlük (sağlamak) istiyor o. Eğer Allah (peygamber göndermek) dileseydi elbette (bize) melekler indirirdi. Biz evvelki atalarımızdan bunu duymadık". ### İbni Kesir Bunun üzerine kavminin önde gelen kafirlerinden bir grup dediler ki: Bu, sizin gibi bir insandan başka bir şey değildir. Sizden üstün olmak istiyor. Şayet Allah dilemiş olsaydı; melekler indirirdi. İlk atalarımızdan da böyle bir şey işitmedik. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Ama o'nun kavmi içinde hakkı kabule yanaşmayan seçkinler çevresi: "Bu (adam) kendine sizin üstünüzde bir yer sağlamak isteyen, sizin gibi ölümlü bir kişiden başka biri değil ki!" dediler, "Çünkü, Allah (bize bir mesaj ulaştırmak) isteseydi, herhalde melekleri gönderirdi; (üstelik,) biz atalarımızdan asla bu(na benzer herhangi bir) şey işitmedik! ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Kavminden ileri gelen kafirler: -Bu, sizin gibi bir insandan başka bir şey değil. Biz ilk atalarımız arasında böyle bir şey duymadık." ### Mustafa İslamoğlu — Hayat Kitabı Kur’an Bunun üzerine, kavminin seçkinlerinden inkarda ısrar eden kimseler şöyle dedi: "Bu da, sadece sizin gibi ölümlü bir insan, onun amacı size üstünlük sağlamak; hem eğer Allah isteseydi, gökten bir melek indiriverirdi; (üstelik) bizler, bu konuda önder atalarımızdan bir şey işitmiş de değiliz. ### Erhan Aktaş (Eski Baskı) — Kerim Kur'an Bunun üzerine halkından gerçeği yalanlayan nankörlerin meleleri:[1] "Bu, sizin gibi bir beşerden başka bir şey değildir. Buna göre şae (شاء) fiilinin öznesi Allah olursa "gerekeni yaptı veya yarattı", insan olursa "gerekeni yaptı" anlamında olur. Allah insanlara, tercihlerine göre davranma hürriyeti vermeseydi hiç kimse yanlış bir şey yapamaz ve imtihan diye bir şey de olmazdı ([Nahl 16/93](https://quran.so/16/93)). Yanlış kader anlayışını imanın bir esası gibi İslam'a yerleştirmek isteyenler, büyük bir çarpıtma yaparak şae (شاء) fiiline irade yani isteme ve dileme anlamı vermiş; bunu, tefsirlere hatta sözlüklere bile yerleştirerek birçok ayetin mealini bozmuşlardır.
