Surah Al-Mulk (The Sovereignty) — سورة الملك - **Verse:** 5 / 30 · **Juz:** 29 · **Mushaf page:** 561 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-mulk/verse-5 ## Arabic وَلَقَدْ زَيَّنَّا السَّمَٓاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَاب۪يحَ وَجَعَلْنَاهَا رُجُوماً لِلشَّيَاط۪ينِ وَاَعْتَدْنَا لَهُمْ عَذَابَ السَّع۪يرِ ## Transcription Walaqad zayyanna assamaaaddunya bimasabeeha wajaAAalnaharujooman lishshayateeni waaAAtadna lahumAAathaba assaAAeer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made some of them stones for the shaytans for whom We have prepared the punishment of the Blaze. ### Progressive Muslims And We have adorned this universe with lamps, and We made it with projectiles against the devils; and We prepared for them the retribution of the blazing Fire. ### Shabbir Ahmed And indeed, We have beautified the sky of the world with shining lamps. It means: We have not created this universe dark, dismal and desolate, but have beautified and decorated it with stars, the glory and grandeur of which at night strike man with amazement. - [3] This does not mean that the stars themselves are pelted at the Satans, nor that the meteorites shoot out only to drive away the Satans, but it means that the countless meteorites which originate from the stars and wander in space at tremendous speeds and which also fall to the earth in a continuous shower prevent the Satans of the earth from ascending to the heavens. Even if they try to ascend heavenward these meteorites drive them away. This thing has been mentioned here because the Arabs believed about the soothsayers, and this also was the claim made by the soothsayers themselves, that the Satans were under their control, or that they had a close contact with them, and through them they received news of the unseen, and thus, could foretell the destinies of the people. That is why at several places in the Quran, it has been stated that there is absolutely no possibility for the Satans ascending to the heavens and bringing news of the unseen. (For explanation, see (E.Ns 9-12 of Surah Al-Hijr), (E.Ns 6, 7 of Surah As- Saaffat). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And We decorated the lowermost heaven with lamps (or heavenly bodies), some of them adapted to be like weapons in pursuit of the evil ones for whom We have prepared torture in the blazes of Hell. ### Bijan Moeinian God has adorned the lowest universe with the sources of light [probably a reference to the Quasars], being used as missiles against the devils [perhaps the reference is to anti-matter which will be destroyed immediately in contact with the matter] and prepared for them a blazing fire. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And indeed We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps[1], and We have made such lamps (as) missiles to drive away the Shayâtîn (devils), and have prepared for them the torment of the blazing Fire. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And we have, (from of old), adorned the lowest heaven with Lamps, and We have made such (Lamps) (as) missiles to drive away the Evil Ones, and have prepared for them the Penalty of the Blazing Fire. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran And indeed, We adorned the lowest heaven with ˹stars like˺ lamps, and made them ˹as missiles˺ for stoning ˹eavesdropping˺ devils, for whom We have also prepared the torment of the Blaze.[1] ### Taqi Usmani And We have decorated the nearest sky with lamps, and have made them devices to stone the devils, and We have prepared for them the punishment of Hell. ### Abdul Haleem We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps and made them [missiles] for stoning devils for whom We have also prepared the torment of a blazing fire. ### Arthur John Arberry And We adorned the lower heaven with lamps, and made them things to stone Satans; and We have prepared for them the chastisement of the Blaze. ### E.
