Surah Al-Mujadila (The Pleading Woman) — سورة المجادلة - **Verse:** 5 / 22 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 541 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-mujadila/verse-5 ## Arabic اِنَّ الَّذ۪ينَ يُحَٓادُّونَ اللّٰهَ وَرَسُولَهُ كُبِتُوا كَمَا كُبِتَ الَّذ۪ينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ وَقَدْ اَنْزَلْـنَٓا اٰيَاتٍ بَيِّنَاتٍۜ وَلِلْكَافِر۪ينَ عَذَابٌ مُه۪ينٌۚ ## Transcription Inna allatheena yuhaddoona Allahawarasoolahu kubitoo kama kubita allatheena minqablihim waqad anzalna ayatin bayyinatinwalilkafireena AAathabun muheen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be subdued and overcome as those before them were also subdued and overcome. We have sent down Clear Signs. The kafirun will have a humiliating punishment. ### Progressive Muslims Those who oppose God and His messenger will be disgraced, like their previous counterparts were disgraced. We have sent down clear proofs, and the rejecters have incurred a shameful retribution. ### Shabbir Ahmed Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be disgraced as were disgraced those before their times. Thus, We have sent down Clear Messages, and for the rejecters is a shameful suffering. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Those who oppose God and His messenger will be abased even as those before them were abased. And We have sent down clear proofs; and for the false claimers of guidance is a humiliating punishment. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Those who oppose God and His messenger will be disgraced, like their previous counterparts were disgraced. We have sent down clear proofs, and the rejectors have incurred a shameful retribution. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Those who oppose God will be disgraced, as those before them were. We have sent down very clear signs. For unbelievers there is a shameful punishment. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Indeed, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment. ### Muhammad Asad Verily, those who contend against God and His Apostle shall be brought low even as those [evildoers] who lived before them were brought low after We had bestowed [on them] clear messages from on high. And [so,] for those who deny the truth there will be shameful suffering in store ### Marmaduke Pickthall Lo! those who oppose Allah and His messenger will be abased even as those before them were abased; and We have sent down clear tokens, and for disbelievers is a shameful doom ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Verily those who oppose Allah and His Messenger[1] shall be brought low even as those before them were brought low.[2] Surely We have sent down Clear Signs; and a humiliating chastisement awaits the unbelievers;[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] Those who oppose: Those who do not recognize the bounds set by Allah and instead set some other bounds for themselves. Ibn Jarir Tabari has given this commentary of this verse: That is, the people who resist Allah with regard to the bounds and duties enjoined by Him, and set for themselves some other bounds instead of the bounds set by Him. Baidawi has given this commentary of it: That is, they show hostility towards and dispute with Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him), or set other bounds for themselves than the bounds set by them, or adopt the bounds set by others. Alusi in his Ruh Al-Maani has concurred with Baidawi in this commentary and cited the statement of Shaikh-ul-Islam Sadullah Chalpi to the effect: In this verse a threat has been held out to those kings and evil rulers who have framed many such rules as are opposed to the bounds set by the Shariah, and called them law. Here, Allama Alusi has dwelt upon the constitutional status (i.e. constitutional from the Islamic viewpoint) of the man made laws as against the Shariah laws and concluded thus: - [2] There can be no doubt in the disbelief of the person who regards this law as commendable and superior to the Shariah and says that it is wiser and better suited to the genius of the people. And when the Shariah injunction in a particular matter is pointed out to him, he is angry, as we have seen some of those who are under the curse of Allah. - [3] The word used in the original is kubt, which means to disgrace, to destroy, to curse, to drive off, to push out, to debase. What is meant to be said is that the communities of the former Prophets who resisted Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) and rebelled against His commandments have already gone to their doom. Now those from among the Muslims who adopt the same attitude in life will also meet with the same evil end. Whenever the people made their own laws contradictory to divine law, or adopted laws made by others, they were deprived of Allah’s bounty and grace, with the result that their lives were filled with deviations, immoralities and moral and social evils, which caused them to be ultimately degraded and humiliated oven in this world. If the same error now is committed by the community of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there is no reason why it should continue to be regarded with favor by Allah and He may go on protecting it from a disgraceful destruction for ever and ever. Allah had neither any ill will against the communities of His former Messengers nor has He any special connection with the community of this Messenger (peace be upon him). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Those who challenge Allah and His Messenger are' cursed; they are beset by sin and covered with ignominy as were the like before them. We have revealed expounded revelations and lucid signs serving as evidence and ground for belief; and there awaits those who denied Allah a condign punishment. ### Bijan Moeinian Have no doubt that those who resist God and His messenger will be reduced to dust as the disbeliever before them were humiliated accordingly. God has sent down clear signs and there is an awful punishment in reserve for the disbelievers. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Verily, those who oppose Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم)[1] will be disgraced, as those before them (among the past nation) were disgraced. And We have sent down clear Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). And for the disbelievers is a disgracing torment. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Those who resist Allah and His Messenger will be humbled to dust, as were those before them: for We have already sent down Clear Signs. And the Unbelievers (will have) a humiliating Penalty,- ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Indeed, those who defy Allah and His Messenger will be debased, just like those before them. We have certainly sent down clear revelations. And the disbelievers will suffer a humiliating punishment. ### Taqi Usmani Surely those who oppose Allah and His Messenger shall be disgraced, just as those before them were disgraced. We have sent down clear verses, and for the disbelievers there is a humiliating punishment ### Abdul Haleem Those who oppose God and His Messenger will be brought low, like those before them: We have revealed clear messages, and humiliating torment awaits those who ignore them, ### Arthur John Arberry Surely those who oppose God and His Messenger shall be frustrated as those before them were frustrated. Now We have sent down signs, clear signs; and for the unbelievers awaits a humbling chastisement, ### E. Henry Palmer Verily, those who oppose God and His Apostle shall be upset, as those before them were upset. We have sent down manifest signs: for the misbelievers is shameful woe ### Hamid S. Aziz Surely those who act in opposition to Allah and His Messenger shall be abased even as those before them were abased; and indeed We have revealed clear revelations, and the unbelievers shall have a shameful doom. ### Mahmoud Ghali Surely (the ones) who contravene Allah and His Messenger will be suppressed, even as the ones even before them were suppressed. And We have already sent down signs, supremely evident (signs), and for the disbelievers is a degrading torment. ### George Sale Verily they who oppose God and his apostle, shall be brought low, as the unbelievers who preceded them were brought low. And now have We sent down manifest signs: And an ignominious punishment awaiteth the unbelievers. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Verily, those who oppose Allah and His Messenger will be disgraced down to dust, like those who were disgraced before them: For We have already sent down clear Signs. And the unbelievers (will suffer) a shameful penalty— ### Amatul Rahman Omar Surely, those who oppose Allâh and His Messenger shall be laid low and humbled as those (opponents of the truth) who were before them were laid low and humble. And We have already revealed clear ordinances (as to how to uplift the status of women). And the deniers of (these ordinances) shall receive a humiliating punishment. ### Ali Quli Qarai Indeed those who oppose Allah and His Apostle will be subdued just as were subdued those before them. We have certainly sent down manifest signs, and there is a humiliating punishment for the faithless. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Muhakkak ki Allah ve O'nun Rasulüne zıtlaşanlar, kendilerinden öncekilerin aşağılandıkları gibi aşağılandılar! Halbuki gerçekten apaçık işaretler inzal ettik. . . Hakikat bilgisini inkar edenler için aşağılayıp rezil duruma düşürücü bir azap vardır. ### Ali Bulaç — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Türkçe Anlamı Gerçekten Allah'a ve Resulü'ne karşı (onların koydukları sınırları tanımayıp kendileri sınır koymaya kalkışmakla) başkaldıranlar, kendilerinden öncekilerin alçaltılması gibi alçaltılmışlardır. Kafirler için alçaltıcı bir azap vardır. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Muhakkak ki Allah ve Resulüne had yarışına kalkanlar çarpıldılar, tıpkı onlardan evvelkilerin çarpıldıkları gibi, halbuki açık açık ayetler de indirmiştik, kafirlere hem de hakaretli bir azab var. ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Muhakkak ki, Allah ve peygamberine had yarışına (onların koyduğu sınırlardan başka sınırlar koymağa) kalkanlar, tıpkı kendilerinden öncekilerin çarpıldıkları gibi (helaka) çarpılırlar. Oysa Biz açık açık ayetler de indirmiştik. Kafirlere ise alçaltıcı bir azap vardır. ### Gültekin Onan Gerçekten Tanrı'ya ve Resulü'ne karşı [onların koydukları sınırlan tanımayıp kendileri sınır koymaya kalkışmakla] başkaldıranlar, kendilerinden öncekilerin alçaltılması gibi alçaltılmışlardır. Oysa biz apaçık ayetler indirdik. Kafirler için küçültücü bir azap vardır. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Allaha ve peygamberine muhaalefet etmekde olanlar, kendilerinden evvelkilerin uğratıldıkları zillet gibi zillete (ve helake) giriftar edilmişlerdir. Halbuki biz (onlara) açık açık ayetler de indirmişizdir. (Bunları inkar eden) kafirlere horlayıcı bir azab vardır, ### İbni Kesir Allah'a ve Rasulüne muhalefet edenler; kendilerinden öncekiler nasıl alçaltıldı ise öyle alçaltılacaklardır. Halbuki Biz, apaçık ayetler indirmişizdir. Ve küfredenlere horlayıcı bir azab vardır. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Allah'a ve Elçisi'ne karşı gelenler, onlardan önce yaşamış olup da Biz (kendilerine) açık mesajlar gönderdikten sonra aşağılanmış bulunan (zalim)ler kadar aşağılanacaklardır. Ve (böylece,) hakikati inkar edenleri utanç verici bir azap bekleyecektir, ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Allah'a ve Peygamberine muhalefet edenler, kendilerinden öncekilerin alçaltıldıkları gibi alçaltılacaklardır.
