Surah Al-Mujadila (The Pleading Woman) — سورة المجادلة - **Verse:** 16 / 22 · **Juz:** 28 · **Mushaf page:** 543 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-mujadila/verse-16 ## Arabic اِتَّخَذُٓوا اَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّةً فَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَب۪يلِ اللّٰهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُه۪ينٌ ## Transcription Ittakhathoo aymanahum junnatanfasaddoo AAan sabeeli Allahi falahum AAathabunmuheen ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They made their oaths into a cloak and barred the Way of Allah, so they will have a humiliating punishment. ### Progressive Muslims They used their oaths as a means of repelling from the path of God. Consequently, they have incurred a shameful retribution. ### Shabbir Ahmed They use their oaths as cover and bar others from the Path of Allah. So theirs will be a shameful doom. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation They took their oaths as a cover, and turned away from the path of God; so for them is a humiliating punishment. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation They used their oaths as a means of repelling from the path of God. Consequently, they have incurred a shameful retribution. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament They used their oaths as a means of repelling from the path of GOD. Consequently, they have incurred a shameful retribution. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They have made their oaths a shield, and obstruct people from the way of God. There is shameful punishment for them. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allah, and for them is a humiliating punishment. ### Muhammad Asad they have made their oaths a cover [for their falseness], and thus they turn others away from the path of God: hence, shameful suffering awaits them. ### Marmaduke Pickthall They make a shelter of their oaths and turn (men) from the way of Allah; so theirs will be a shameful doom. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They have taken their oaths as a shield by means of which they hinder people from the Way of Allah.[1] Theirs shall be a humiliating chastisement. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, on the one hand, they swear oaths to their faith and fidelity to make the Muslims believe that they belong to them, and on the other, they sow doubts and suspicions against Islam and the followers of Islam and the Prophet (peace be upon him) of Islam in the hearts of the people, so that they should turn away from Islam in disgust taking their word to be a true inside picture of Islam, coming from the Muslims themselves. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They used their oaths to hide, under the garb of truth, their extreme vanity and evil deeds, and many among the believers were deceived, and so their policy achieved its necessary ends. Consequently they have blocked the path of Allah, the path of righteousness and persistently opposed the progress in purpose and in action. There awaits them a humiliating and condign punishment; ### Bijan Moeinian Their oath of allegiance to Islam is just a cover so that they may turn the Muslims from the path of God. For this they will have a disgraceful punishment. ### Al-Hilali & Khan They have made their oaths a screen (for their evil actions). Thus they hinder (men) from the Path of Allâh: so they shall have a humiliating torment. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali They have made their oaths a screen (for their misdeeds): thus they obstruct (men) from the Path of Allah: therefore shall they have a humiliating Penalty. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They have made their ˹false˺ oaths as a shield, hindering ˹others˺ from the cause of Allah. So they will suffer a humiliating punishment. ### Taqi Usmani They have taken their oaths as a shield, and then have prevented (people) from the way of Allah. Therefore, for them there is a humiliating punishment. ### Abdul Haleem They have used their oaths to cover up [their false deeds], and barred others from the path of God. A humiliating torment awaits them- ### Arthur John Arberry They have taken their oaths as a covering, and barred from God's way; so there awaits them a humbling chastisement. ### E. Henry Palmer They take their faith for a cloak; and they turn men aside from the path of God; and for them is shameful woe! ### Hamid S. Therefore they shall have a shameful penalty. ### Amatul Rahman Omar They have taken shelter behind their oaths (for their falsehood) so that they turn (people) away from Allâh's way. So there awaits them a humiliating punishment. ### Ali Quli Qarai They make a shield of their oaths and bar [people] from the way of Allah; so there is a humiliating punishment for them. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Yeminlerini kalkan edindiler de Allah yolundan alıkoydular. . .
