Surah Al-Ma'idah (The Feast) — سورة المائدة - **Verse:** 17 / 120 · **Juz:** 6 · **Mushaf page:** 109 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-maidah/verse-17 ## Arabic لَقَدْ كَفَرَ الَّذ۪ينَ قَالُٓوا اِنَّ اللّٰهَ هُوَ الْمَس۪يحُ ابْنُ مَرْيَمَۜ قُلْ فَمَنْ يَمْلِكُ مِنَ اللّٰهِ شَيْـٔاً اِنْ اَرَادَ اَنْ يُهْلِكَ الْمَس۪يحَ ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ وَاُمَّهُ وَمَنْ فِي الْاَرْضِ جَم۪يعاًۜ وَلِلّٰهِ مُلْكُ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَاۜ يَخْلُقُ مَا يَشَٓاءُۜ وَاللّٰهُ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَد۪يرٌ ## Transcription Laqad kafara allatheena qalooinna Allaha huwa almaseehu ibnu maryama qul famanyamliku mina Allahi shay-an in arada an yuhlikaalmaseeha ibna maryama waommahu waman fee al-ardijameeAAan walillahi mulku assamawatiwal-ardi wama baynahuma yakhluqu mayashao wallahu AAala kulli shay-inqadeer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those who say, ‘Allah is the Messiah, son of Maryam,’ are kafir. Say: ‘Who possesses any power at all over Allah if He desires to destroy the Messiah, son of Maryam, and his mother, and everyone else on earth?’ The kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything between them belongs to Allah. He creates whatever He wills. Allah has power over all things. ### Progressive Muslims Rejecters indeed are those who have said: "God is the Messiah the son of Mary. " Say: "Who has any power against God if He had wanted to destroy the Messiah son of Mary, and his mother, and all who are on Earth!" And to God is the sovereignty of heavens and Earth and all that is in-between; He creates what He pleases. God is capable of all things. ### Shabbir Ahmed They indeed have denied the Truth who say, "God is the Messiah, son of Mary. " Say, "Who could oppose God if He willed to annihilate the Messiah son of Mary, and his mother and everyone on earth, all of them?" Allah's is the Dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them. He creates all things according to His Laws. GOD is Omnipotent. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Verily they are unbelievers who say: "The Messiah, son of Mary, is God. " You ask them: "Who could prevail against God if He had chosen to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, and his mother, and the rest of mankind?" For God's is the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever lies between them. He creates what He please, for God has the power over all things. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is Christ, the son of Mary. Say, "Then who could prevent Allah at all if He had intended to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, or his mother or everyone on the earth?" And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent. ### Muhammad Asad Indeed, the truth deny they who say, "Behold, God is the Christ, son of Mary. " Say: "And who could have prevailed with God in any way had it been His will to destroy the Christ, son of Mary, and his mother, and everyone who is on earth-all of them? For, God's is the dominion over the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; He creates what He wills: and God has the power to will anything!" ### Marmaduke Pickthall They indeed have disbelieved who say: Lo! Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary. Say: Who then can do aught against Allah, if He had willed to destroy the Messiah son of Mary, and his mother and everyone on earth? Allah's is the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them. He createth what He will. And Allah is Able to do all things. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Indeed those who said: 'Christ, the son of Mary, he is indeed God', disbelieved.[1] Say (O Muhammad!): 'Who could have overruled Allah had He so willed to destroy Christ, the son of Mary, and his mother, and all those who are on earth?' For to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; He creates what He wills.[2] Allah is All-Powerful. _Footnotes_ - [1] The original mistake committed by the Christians in declaring Jesus to be a combination of human and divine essences turned Jesus into a mystery for them, and the more the Christian scholars tried to solve this mystery by resorting to conjecture and rhetorical extravagance the more involved the whole matter became. Those who were more impressed by the humanity of Jesus stressed his being the son of God and considered him to be one of the three gods. Those who were more impressed by the divinity of Jesus considered him to be none other than God, stressing that he was the human incarnation of God, and worshipped him as God. Those who tried to strike a middle path spent all their efforts hammering out subtle verbal formulations of the Trinity that would allow people to consider the Messiah to be God and man at one and the same time, to affirm that God and the Messiah are independent and simultaneously constitute an inseparable whole see (Surah 4, nn. 212, 213, 215) above. - [2] This statement hints at the childishness of those who have been misled into believing that the Messiah himself is God either because of his miraculous birth or because of his flawless moral character or because of the miracles which he performed. The Messiah is merely a sign of the innumerable wonders of God's creation; a sign which somehow dazzled the eyes of those superficial people. Had their perception been wider they would have been able to see that there are even more inspiring examples of His creation and infinite power. If anything their attitude was indicative of the intellectual puerility of those who were so overawed by the excellence of a creature as to mistake him for the Creator. Those whose intelligence penetrates through the excellence of creatures, who look upon them merely as signs of the magnificent power of God, and who are led by such observations to a reinforcement of faith in the Creator are truly wise. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Infidels indeed are those who declare: " Allah is the Messiah, ‘Isa, the son of Maryam". Say to them O Muhammad "Who then can restrain Allah if He willed to do away with the Messiah, ‘Isa, the son of Maryam, his mother and all those domiciled on earth! To Allah, alone, belong all that is in the heavens and on earth and all in between; He brings into being whatever He will; He is indeed Qadirun (Omnipotent) to effect all things. ### Bijan Moeinian Those who say that Jesus, son of Mary, is God Himself [incarnated], have indeed forged a great lie. If God decides to destroy Jesus, his mother, and all the inhabitants of the earth, who has the power to prevent Him from doing so? To God belongs the Kingdom of the earth and the heavens and whatever is between. He creates whatever He decides [including Jesus] and has power over His realm of creation. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Surely, in disbelief are they who say that Allâh is the Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary)[1]. Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Who then has the least power against Allâh, if He were to destroy the Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), his mother, and all those who are on the earth together?" And to Allâh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them. He creates what He wills. And Allâh is Able to do all things. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. Say: "Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all every - one that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseth. For Allah hath power over all things." ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Indeed, those who say, "Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary," have fallen into disbelief. Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “Who has the power to prevent Allah if He chose to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone in the world all together?” To Allah ˹alone˺ belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and everything in between. He creates whatever He wills. And Allah is Most Capable of everything. ### Taqi Usmani Certainly, infidels are those who say, "God is the MasīH, son of Maryam (Jesus son of Mary)." Say, “Who then has the power to do anything against Allah, if He wills to eliminate the MasīH son of Maryam and his mother and all those on earth?” Unto Allah belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and what lies between them. He creates what He wills. Allah is powerful over everything. ### Abdul Haleem Those who say, ‘God is the Messiah, the son of Mary,’ are defying the truth. Say, ‘If it had been God’s will, could anyone have prevented Him from destroying the Messiah, son of Mary, together with his mother and everyone else on earth? Control of the heavens and earth and all that is between them belongs to God: He creates whatever He will. God has power over everything.’ ### Arthur John Arberry They are unbelievers who say, 'God is the Messiah, Mary's son. Aziz They, indeed, have disbelieved who say, "Verily, Allah is the Messiah the son of Mary. Onun Allah'ın oğlu olduğu iddiasını Pavlus ortaya attı. Bunu doğru sayan karar, üçüncü yüzyıldan sonra Antakya'da alındı (Par. 465.) 325'te toplanan Ökümenik İznik Konsili de İsa'nın yaratılmış olmadığına, Baba'dan doğduğuna ve onunla aynı özden olduğuna karar verdi (Par. 465). Üçüncü Ökümenik Efes konsili 431'de şu kararı aldı: "İsa, kendi kişiliğini, akıllı ruhla canlandırılmış bir bedenle birleştirerek insan olmuştur. Meryem Ana ise, gerçek anlamda Tanrı'nın anasıdır." 451'de toplanan dördüncü ökümenik Kadıköy konsili onun gerçek tanrı olduğunu şöyle ilan etti: "Rabbimiz Mesih İsa'nın mükemmel Tanrılığa ve mükemmel insanlığa sahip, gerçek Tanrı ve gerçek insan olduğunu, akıllı bir ruhtan ve bedenden oluştuğunu, Tanrılık açısından Baba ile, insanlık açısından da bizimle aynı özde olduğunu, günah dışında hepimize her şeyde benzer olduğunu, Tanrılık açısından yüzyıllar öncesinden Baba'dan doğduğunu, insanlık açısından bizim esenliğimiz için bakire Meryem'den doğduğunu oybirliği ile kabul ettiğimizi resmen beyan ederiz (Par. 467)." - [2] Şae (شاء) fiili, "bir şey yapmak" anlamındaki şey (شيء) mastarından türemiştir. Allah'ın yapması o şeyi var etmesi, insanın yapması da o şey için gereken çabayı göstermesidir (Müfredat). Allah, her şeyi bir ölçüye göre var eder ([Kamer 54/49,](https://quran.so/54/49) [Ra'd 13/8](https://quran.so/13/8)). İmtihanla ilgili şeyleri iyi ve kötü diye ikiye ayırmıştır ([Enbiya 21/35](https://quran.so/21/35)). Allah, herkesin doğru yolda olmasını ister ([Nisa 4/26](https://quran.so/4/26)) ama sadece doğru şeyler yapanı doğru yolda sayar ([Nur 24/46](https://quran.so/24/46)). Yaptığının doğru veya yanlış olduğunu da kişiye ilham eder. Onun için doğru davrananın içi rahat, yanlış davrananın içi de sıkıntılı olur ([Şems 91/7](https://quran.so/91/7)-[10](https://quran.so/91/10)). Buna göre şae (شاء) fiilinin öznesi Allah olursa "gerekeni yaptı veya yarattı", insan olursa "gerekeni yaptı" anlamında olur. Allah insanlara, tercihlerine göre davranma hürriyeti vermeseydi hiç kimse yanlış bir şey yapamaz ve imtihan diye bir şey de olmazdı ([Nahl 16/93](https://quran.so/16/93)).
