_In the name of God, the Almighty, the Merciful._

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّح۪يمِ

## Verse 1

سَاَلَ سَٓائِلٌ بِعَذَابٍ وَاقِعٍۙ

Saala sa-ilun biAAathabin waqiAA

A petitioner asked about a punishment to come

## Verse 2

لِلْـكَافِر۪ينَ لَيْسَ لَهُ دَافِعٌۙ

Lilkafireena laysa lahu dafiAA

To the false claimers of guidance — there is none to avert it —

## Verse 3

مِنَ اللّٰهِ ذِي الْمَعَارِجِۜ

Mina Allahi thee almaAAarij

From God, Owner of the Means of Ascent: —

## Verse 4

تَعْرُجُ الْمَلٰٓئِكَةُ وَالرُّوحُ اِلَيْهِ ف۪ي يَوْمٍ كَانَ مِقْدَارُهُ خَمْس۪ينَ اَلْفَ سَنَةٍۚ

TaAAruju almala-ikatu warroohuilayhi fee yawmin kana miqdaruhu khamseena alfasana

The angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in a day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years

## Verse 5

فَاصْبِرْ صَبْراً جَم۪يلاً

Fasbir sabran jameela

So be thou patient with comely patience.

## Verse 6

اِنَّهُمْ يَرَوْنَهُ بَع۪يداًۙ

Innahum yarawnahu baAAeeda

They see it as far off,

## Verse 7

وَنَرٰيهُ قَر۪يباًۜ

Wanarahu qareeba

But We see it as near: —

## Verse 8

يَوْمَ تَكُونُ السَّمَٓاءُ كَالْمُهْلِۙ

Yawma takoonu assamao kalmuhl

The day the sky will be like molten brass,

## Verse 9

وَتَكُونُ الْجِبَالُ كَالْعِهْنِۙ

Watakoonu aljibalu kalAAihn

And the mountains like wool,

## Verse 10

وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَم۪يمٌ حَم۪يماًۚ

Wala yas-alu hameemun hameema

And no loyal friend will ask of a loyal friend.

## Verse 11

يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْۜ  يَوَدُّ الْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَد۪ي مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَن۪يهِۙ

Yubassaroonahum yawaddu almujrimu lawyaftadee min AAathabi yawmi-ithin bibaneeh

They will be given sight of them: — the lawbreaker will wish that should he be ransomed from the punishment of that day by his sons,

## Verse 12

وَصَاحِبَتِه۪ وَاَخ۪يهِۙ

Wasahibatihi waakheeh

And his consort, and his brother,

## Verse 13

وَفَص۪يلَتِهِ الَّت۪ي تُـْٔو۪يهِۙ

Wafaseelatihi allatee tu/weeh

And his kinsmen who sheltered him,

## Verse 14

وَمَنْ فِي الْاَرْضِ جَم۪يعاًۙ ثُمَّ يُنْج۪يهِۙ

Waman fee al-ardi jameeAAan thummayunjeeh

And whoso is in the earth all together — then might it deliver him.

## Verse 15

كَلَّاۜ اِنَّهَا لَظٰىۙ

Kalla innaha latha

No, indeed! It is a blazing fire,

## Verse 16

نَزَّاعَةً لِلشَّوٰىۚ

NazzaAAatan lishshawa

Removing the scalp,

## Verse 17

تَدْعُوا مَنْ اَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلّٰىۙ

TadAAoo man adbara watawalla

Calling him who turned and went away

## Verse 18

وَجَمَعَ فَاَوْعٰى

WajamaAAa faawAAa

And gathered and hoarded.

## Verse 19

اِنَّ الْاِنْسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوعاًۙ

Inna al-insana khuliqa halooAAa

Man was created anxious

## Verse 20

اِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوعاًۙ

Itha massahu ashsharrujazooAAa

— When evil touches him, impatient,

## Verse 21

وَاِذَا مَسَّهُ الْخَيْرُ مَنُوعاًۙ

Wa-itha massahu alkhayru manooAAa

And when good touches him, withholding —

## Verse 22

اِلَّا الْمُصَلّ۪ينَۙ

Illa almusalleen

Save the performers of duty:

## Verse 23

اَلَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ عَلٰى صَلَاتِهِمْ دَٓائِمُونَۖ

Allatheena hum AAala salatihimda-imoon

Those who are constant in their duty,

## Verse 24

وَالَّذ۪ينَ ف۪ٓي اَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَعْلُومٌۙ

Wallatheena fee amwalihimhaqqun maAAloom

And those in whose wealth is a due known

## Verse 25

لِلسَّٓائِلِ وَالْمَحْرُومِۖ

Lissa-ili walmahroom

For the petitioner and the one deprived,

## Verse 26

وَالَّذ۪ينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ الدّ۪ينِۖ

Wallatheena yusaddiqoonabiyawmi addeen

And are those who confirm the Day of Judgment,

## Verse 27

وَالَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ مِنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِمْ مُشْفِقُونَۚ

Wallatheena hum min AAathabirabbihim mushfiqoon

And are those who, of the punishment of their Lord, are in dread,

## Verse 28

اِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍۚ

Inna AAathaba rabbihim ghayru ma/moon

(The punishment of their Lord is not that from which there is safety)

## Verse 29

وَالَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَۙ

Wallatheena hum lifuroojihim hafithoon

And are those who preserve their chastity

## Verse 30

اِلَّا عَلٰٓى اَزْوَاجِهِمْ اَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ اَيْمَانُهُمْ فَاِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُوم۪ينَۚ

Illa AAala azwajihim awma malakat aymanuhum fa-innahum ghayru maloomeen

Save with their wives, or what their right hands possess — for then are they not blameworthy,

## Verse 31

فَمَنِ ابْتَغٰى وَرَٓاءَ ذٰلِكَ فَاُو۬لٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَۚ

Famani ibtagha waraa thalikafaola-ika humu alAAadoon

(But whoso seeks beyond that: it is they who are the transgressors)

## Verse 32

وَالَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ لِاَمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَاعُونَۖ

Wallatheena hum li-amanatihimwaAAahdihim raAAoon

And are those who are to their trusts and their covenant attentive,

## Verse 33

وَالَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَٓائِمُونَۖ

Wallatheena hum bishahadatihimqa-imoon

And are those who, in their witness, are upright,

## Verse 34

وَالَّذ۪ينَ هُمْ عَلٰى صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَۜ

Wallatheena hum AAala salatihimyuhafithoon

And are those who preserve their duty:

## Verse 35

اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ ف۪ي جَنَّاتٍ مُكْرَمُونَۜ ۟

Ola-ika fee jannatin mukramoon

Those are in gardens, honoured.

## Verse 36

فَمَالِ الَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا قِبَلَكَ مُهْطِع۪ينَۙ

Famali allatheena kafarooqibalaka muhtiAAeen

Then what ails those who ignore warning that they, before thee, are straining forward

## Verse 37

عَنِ الْيَم۪ينِۙ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ عِز۪ينَ

AAani alyameeni waAAani ashshimaliAAizeen

On the right, and on the left, in separate groups?

## Verse 38

اَيَطْمَعُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ اَنْ يُدْخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَع۪يمٍۙ

AyatmaAAu kullu imri-in minhum anyudkhala jannata naAAeem

Does every man among them hope to be made to enter a garden of bliss?

## Verse 39

كَلَّاۜ  اِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُمْ مِمَّا يَعْلَمُونَ

Kalla inna khalaqnahummimma yaAAlamoon

No, indeed! We have created them from what they know.

## Verse 40

فَلَٓا اُقْسِمُ بِرَبِّ الْمَشَارِقِ وَالْمَغَارِبِ اِنَّا لَقَادِرُونَۙ

Fala oqsimu birabbi almashariqiwalmagharibi inna laqadiroon

Then do I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests that We are able

## Verse 41

عَلٰٓى اَنْ نُبَدِّلَ خَيْراً مِنْهُمْۙ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوق۪ينَ

AAala an nubaddila khayran minhum wamanahnu bimasbooqeen

To exchange them for better than they; and We will not be outdone.

## Verse 42

فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتّٰى يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذ۪ي يُوعَدُونَۙ

Fatharhum yakhoodoowayalAAaboo hatta yulaqoo yawmahumu allatheeyooAAadoon

So leave thou them to discourse vainly and play until they meet their day which they are promised:

## Verse 43

يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ الْاَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعاً  كَاَنَّهُمْ اِلٰى نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَۙ

Yawma yakhrujoona mina al-ajdathi siraAAankaannahum ila nusubin yoofidoon

The day they will come forth from the graves in haste, as though towards an idol, running,

## Verse 44

خَاشِعَةً اَبْصَارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌۜ ذٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الَّذ۪ي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ

KhashiAAatan absaruhumtarhaquhum thillatun thalika alyawmu allatheekanoo yooAAadoon

Their eyes humbled, humiliation covering them. That is the day which they are promised.
