Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave) — سورة الكهف - **Verse:** 86 / 110 · **Juz:** 16 · **Mushaf page:** 302 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-kahf/verse-86 ## Arabic حَتّٰٓى اِذَا بَلَغَ مَغْرِبَ الشَّمْسِ وَجَدَهَا تَغْرُبُ ف۪ي عَيْنٍ حَمِئَةٍ وَوَجَدَ عِنْدَهَا قَوْماًۜ قُلْنَا يَا ذَا الْقَرْنَيْنِ اِمَّٓا اَنْ تُعَذِّبَ وَاِمَّٓا اَنْ تَتَّخِذَ ف۪يهِمْ حُسْناً ## Transcription Hatta itha balaghamaghriba ashshamsi wajadaha taghrubu fee AAaynin hami-atinwawajada AAindaha qawman qulna ya thaalqarnayni imma an tuAAaththiba wa-imma antattakhitha feehim husna ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley until he reached the setting of the sun and found it setting in a muddy spring and found a people by it. We said, ‘Dhu’l-Qarnayn! You can either punish them or else you can treat them with gentleness.’ ### Progressive Muslims Until he reached the setting of the sun, and he found it setting at a boiling lake, and he found near it a people. Either punish or show them kindness. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary until when he reached the very limits where the sun sets,[1] he saw it setting in dark turbid waters;[2] and nearby he met a people. We said: "O Dhu al-Qarnayn, you have the power to punish or to treat them with kindness."[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] "The setting place of the sun" does not mean the place of the setting of the sun. According to Ibn Kathir, it means that he marched to the west conquering one country after the other till he reached the last boundary of the land, beyond which there was ocean. - [2] "He found it setting in a muddy spring": If Zul Qarnain was Cyrus, then that place would be the western limit of Asia Minor and the black waters would be the Aegean Sea. This interpretation is supported by the use of the word ain instead of bahr in the Quran. - [3] "We said" does not necessarily mean that Allah directly revealed to him these words, and that Zul-Qarnain was a Prophet or was the one who received inspiration from Allah, and the same is the reasonable conjecture. This concerns the time when Zul-Qarnain had taken possession of the land as a conqueror and the conquered people were utterly at your mercy. Then Allah posed a question before his conscience, as if to say: Now is the time of your trial. These people are utterly at your mercy, and you have the option either to behave unjustly towards them or to treat them generously. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab He took the lead in an expedition toward he west until he reached a body of water -said to be the Atlantic Ocean, or more likely a mirky land abounding in swamps– where -he thought when viewing the horizon- the sun sets and where he found a -disorderly and unruly- people over whom We gave him authority. We left to him the manner of dealing with them. Either you punish them, We said or show them kindness; ### Bijan Moeinian If you want, punish them (for their wrongdoings and style of life) or (forgive their past behavior and) rule them with kindness. Dedik ki: "Ey Zulkarneyn, ya onları cezalandırırsın veya haklarında bir güzel muamelede bulunursun." ### Gültekin Onan Sonunda güneşin battığı yere kadar ulaştı ve onu kara çamurlu bir gözede batmakta buldu, yanında bir kavim gördü. Dedik ki: "Ey Zu'l-Karneyn, (istiyorsan onları) ya azaba uğratırsın veya içlerinde güzeliği (geçerli ilke) edinirsin." ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Nihayet güneşin batdığı yere ulaşınca onu kara bir balçıkda batar buldu. Bunun yanında da bir kavm buldu. Dedik ki: "Zülkarneyn, (onları) ya azaba uğratmanda, yahud haklarında güzellik (tarafını) tutman (da serbestsin)". ### İbni Kesir En sonunda güneşin battığı yere vardığı zaman; onu kara bir suda batıyor buldu. Orada bir kavme rastladı. Zülkarneyn, onlara azab da edebilirsin, iyi muamelede de bulunabilirsin, dedik. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı (Batıya doğru giderek) günün birinde güneşin battığı yere vardı; (güneş) ona kopkoyu, bulanık bir suya dalıyormuş gibi göründü. Ve orada (kötülüğün her çeşidine gömülüp gitmiş) bir kavme rastladı. Onun yanında (orada) bir toplum bulmuştu. Bunun üzerine "Ey Zülkarneyn! Allah'ın Zülkarneyn ile yaptığı bu konuşma da onun nebi olduğunu göstermez.
