How evil is the metaphor of those who deny Allah’s Signs! Allah does not guide wrongdoing people. ### Progressive Muslims The example of those who were given the Torah, but then failed to uphold it, is like the donkey that is carrying a burden of books. Miserable indeed is the example of people who denied God's revelations. Wretched is the example of the people who deny the signs of Allah. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. ### Muhammad Asad THE PARABLE of those who were graced with the burden of the Torah, and thereafter failed to bear this burden, is that of an ass that carries a load of books [but cannot benefit from them]. Calamitous is the parable of people who are bent on giving the lie to God's messages - for God does not bestow His guidance upon such evildoing folk! ### Marmaduke Pickthall The likeness of those who are entrusted with the Law of Moses, yet apply it not, is as the likeness of the ass carrying books. Wretched is the likeness of folk who deny the revelations of Allah. And Allah guideth not wrongdoing folk. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The parable of those who were charged with the Torah and then they failed to live up to it[1] is that of a donkey[2] laden with books. Even more evil is the parable of the people who gave the lie to the Signs of Allah.[3] Allah does not direct such wrong-doers to the Right Way. _Footnotes_ - [1] This sentence has two meanings, a general meaning and a special meaning. The general meaning is that the people who were entrusted with the knowledge and practice of the Torah and with the responsibility of guiding the world according to it, neither understood this responsibility nor discharged it as they should have. The special meaning is being the bearers of the Torah these people should have been foremost to join hands with the Messenger (peace be upon him), good news about whose advent had been already given in the Torah, but, instead, they have been in the forefront to oppose him and have thus failed to fulfill the demand of the teaching of the Torah. - [2] That is, just as a donkey loaded with books does not know what it is loaded with, so are these people loaded with the Torah and they do not know what this Book was sent for and what are its demands. - [3] That is, they are even worst than a donkey, who is without sense and therefore is excusable. But these people have intelligence, they read and teach the Torah and are fully aware of its meaning. Yet they are turning away from its guidance and refusing willfully to acknowledge and believe in the Prophet (peace be upon him) who even according to the Torah teaches the truth. They are guilty not because of ignorance but because of denying Allah’s revelation deliberately. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab The simile of those who were given AL-Tawrah to carry in their hearts and in their thoughts and it did not reach their innermost being, nor did they absorb it In their minds or profit by it, speaks of a donkey carrying a load of books full of knowledge and learning but the donkey does not understand it nor does it Profit by it. Evil is the simile of a people who have refused to admit the truth of Allah's revelations and signs, and Allah does not impress piety on the hearts of the perverse who are wrongful of actions. ### Bijan Moeinian The Jews [who treated their book like a piece of museum without making it the center of their lives] are not different from a donkey that carries tons of books without knowing what it is loaded with; what a bad example for those who reject My revelations. God indeed will not guide those who are unjust. ### Al-Hilali & Khan The likeness of those who were entrusted with the (obligation of the) Taurât (Torah) (i.e. to obey its commandments and to practise its laws), but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is as the likeness of a donkey which carries huge burdens of books (but understands nothing from them). How bad is the example of people who deny the Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, signs, revelations) of Allâh. And Allâh guides not the people who are Zâlimûn(polytheists, wrong-doers, disbelievers). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali The similitude of those who were charged with the (obligations of the) Mosaic Law, but who subsequently failed in those (obligations), is that of a donkey which carries huge tomes (but understands them not). Evil is the similitude of people who falsify the Signs of Allah: and Allah guides not people who do wrong. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The example of those who were entrusted with ˹observing˺ the Torah but failed to do so, is that of a donkey carrying books.[1] How evil is the example of those who reject Allah’s signs! Allah'ın mesajlarını yalanlamaya şartlanmış olanların durumu ne acıdır, çünkü Allah rehberliğini böyle zalim bir halka ihsan etmez! ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Tevrat'la yükümlü tutulup ta daha sonra taşımayanların örneği, kitap yüklü eşeğe benzer. Yaratılış 49:15 pasajında Yisahar'ın hamallık için boynunu uzatacağı ve gönüllü bir hizmetkar olacağı yazılmıştır. Bu sözler, Yisahar'ın, 'Tora'nın boyunduruğunu kabul etme ve halkın manevi hazinesini geliştirme' şeklindeki manevi görevini yansıtır (Rashi). Buna göre, Yisahar kabilesinin görevini yerine getirmesi için, öğrendiklerini uygulayıp bunu halka da öğretmesi gereklidir. Eğer bu görevi yerine getirmezlerse görevlerini tamamlayamayacak ve bu yüzden de sırtlarındaki yükten asla kurtulamayacaklardır. Bu yükün ne olduğu konusunda 15. pasajın Saadya Gaon tefsirinde şu bilgiler bulunur: "İsrailoğullarını tarihlerinde yaptıkları ahide bağlı kalmayı davet eden Kur'an, Yahudilere Allah'ın peygamberleri aracılığıyla bildirdiklerine sahip çıkma, onları gizlememe ve gereğini yerine getirme taahhütlerini hatırlatmıştır (bk.
