Give him the news of a painful punishment. ### Progressive Muslims He hears God's revelations being recited to him, then he persists arrogantly, as if he never heard them. Give him news of a painful retribution. ### Shabbir Ahmed (The impostor) who hears Allah's Verses conveyed to him, yet he is haughtily obstinate, as though he never heard them. Hence, announce unto him grievous punishment. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Who hears the proofs of God recited to him then persists in waxing proud as if he heard them not! Then give thou him tidings of a painful punishment. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation He hears the revelations of God being recited to him, then he persists arrogantly, as if he never heard them. Give him news of a painful retribution. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament The one who hears GOD's revelations recited to him, then insists arrogantly on his way, as if he never heard them. Promise him a painful retribution. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Who hears the revelations of God being recited to him, yet persists in denying with arrogance as though he had never heard them! So warn him of a painful punishment. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Who hears the verses of Allah recited to him, then persists arrogantly as if he had not heard them. So give him tidings of a painful punishment. ### Muhammad Asad who hears God’s messages when they are conveyed to him, and yet, as though he had not heard them, persists in his haughty disdain! Hence, announce unto him grievous suffering – ### Marmaduke Pickthall Who heareth the revelations of Allah recited unto him, and then continueth in pride as though he heard them not. Give him tidings of a painful doom. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary who hears Allah's Signs being rehearsed to him, and yet persists in his pride, as though he had not heard it.[1] Announce to him, then, the tidings of a grievous chastisement. _Footnotes_ - [1] In other words, there is a marked difference between the person who listens to Allah’s revelations sincerely with an open mind and ponders over them seriously and the person who listens to them resolved that he would deny them, and then persists in the resolve already made without any serious thought. If the first person does not believe in the revelations immediately, it does not mean that he wants to remain an unbeliever, but because he wants to have greater satisfaction. Therefore, even if he is taking time to believe, it is just possible that another revelation might enter his heart and he might believe sincerely with full satisfaction. As for the other person, he would never believe in any revelation whatsoever, for he has already locked his heart up to every revelation of Allah. In this state such people generally are involved as are characterized by the following three qualities: ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab A vesture of wickedness that makes him counsel deaf to Allah's revelations when they are recited, declaring to him what is in conformity with truth and in agreement with reality. He intentionally closes his heart's ears and exercises inordinate self-esteem as though he lacked his sense of hearing. Tell him O Muhammad to expect a condign punishment, ### Bijan Moeinian These sinful people listen to the word of God recited to them, then turn they back and proudly denounce it. Let them know that a terrible punishment is waiting for them. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Who hears the Verses of Allâh (being) recited to him, yet persists with pride as if he heard them not. So announce to him a painful torment! ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali He hears the Signs of Allah rehearsed to him, yet is obstinate and lofty, as if he had not heard them: then announce to him a Penalty Grievous! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They hear Allah’s revelations recited to them, then persist ˹in denial˺ arrogantly as if they did not hear them. So give them good news of a painful punishment. ### Taqi Usmani who hears Allah’s verses being recited to him, then he remains adamant out of arrogance, as if he never heard them. So give him the ‘good news’ of a painful punishment. ### Abdul Haleem who hears God’s revelations being recited to him, yet persists in his arrogance as if he had never heard them––[Prophet] bring him news of a painful torment!–– ### Arthur John Arberry who hears the signs of God being recited to him, then perseveres in waxing proud, as if he has not heard them; so give him the good tidings of a painful chastisement. ### E. Henry Palmer who hears God's signs sent to him, then persists in being big with pride as though he heard them not - so give him the glad-tidings of grievous woe - ### Hamid S. Aziz Who hears the Signs of Allah recited to him, then persists proudly as though he had not heard them; so announce to him a grievous punishment. ### Mahmoud Ghali (Who) hears the signs (i. e. ayat, signs or verses) of Allah recited to him; thereafter he persists in waxing proud, as if he has not heard them; so give him the (good) tidings of a painful torment. ### George Sale who heareth the signs of God, which are read unto him, and afterwards proudly persisteth in infidelity, as though he heard them not: -- Denounce unto him a painful punishment: -- ### Syed Vickar Ahamed (To him) who hears the Signs (verses) of Allah recited to him yet, is unchanging (stubborn, haughty) and alone, as if he had not heard them: So tell him about a painful penalty! ### Amatul Rahman Omar Who hears the Messages of Allâh which are recited to him and then he very proudly persists (in his disbelief) as though he has not heard these (Messages). So give him the tidings of a woeful punishment. ### Ali Quli Qarai who hears the signs of Allah being recited to him, yet persists disdainfully, as if he had not heard them. Artık sen onu acı bir azabla müjdele. ### İbni Kesir Kendisine okunan Allah'ın ayetlerini dinleyip de sonra onları hiç duymamış gibi büyüklük taslamakta direnir. Ona elim bir azabı müjdele. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı o ki, kendisine iletilen Allah'ın mesajlarını duyar ama sanki onları duymamış gibi küstahça umursamazlığında devam eder! Bu sebeple ona acıklı bir azabı haber ver! ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Kendisine okunan Allah'ın ayetlerini duyar da, sonra büyüklenerek sanki onları hiç duymamış gibi ısrar eder.
