Surah Al-Jathiyah (Crouching) — سورة الجاثية - **Verse:** 24 / 37 · **Juz:** 25 · **Mushaf page:** 500 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-jathiyah/verse-24 ## Arabic وَقَالُوا مَا هِيَ اِلَّا حَيَاتُنَا الدُّنْيَا نَمُوتُ وَنَحْيَا وَمَا يُهْلِكُنَٓا اِلَّا الدَّهْرُۚ وَمَا لَهُمْ بِذٰلِكَ مِنْ عِلْمٍۚ اِنْ هُمْ اِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ ## Transcription Waqaloo ma hiya illa hayatunaaddunya namootu wanahya wamayuhlikuna illa addahru wama lahum bithalikamin AAilmin in hum illa yathunnoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They say, ‘There is nothing but our existence in this world. We die and we live and nothing destroys us except for time.’ They have no knowledge of that. They are only conjecturing. ### Progressive Muslims And they said: "There is nothing but this worldly life; we die and we live and nothing destroys us except the passing of time!" And they have no knowledge about this; they only conjecture. ### Shabbir Ahmed And yet they say, "There is nothing beyond our life of this world. We die as we come to life (per chance) and nothing destroys us but Time." But of that they have no knowledge. They do nothing but make a wild guess. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And they say: “There is only our life of this world: we die, and we live, and there destroys us only time.” But they have no knowledge of that; they are only guessing. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And they said: "There is nothing except this worldly life; we die and we live and nothing destroys us except the passing of time!" They have no sure knowledge about this; they only conjecture. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Yet they say: "There is nothing but the life of this world. We die and we live, and only time annihilates us." Yet they have no knowledge of this: They only speculate. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And they say, "There is not but our worldly life; we die and live, and nothing destroys us except time. " And they have of that no knowledge; they are only assuming. ### Muhammad Asad And yet they say: "There is nothing beyond our life in this world. We die as we come to life, and nothing but time destroys us." But of this they have no knowledge whatever: they do nothing but guess. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And they say: There is naught but our life of the world; we die and we live, and naught destroyeth us save time; when they have no knowledge whatsoever of (all) that; they do but guess. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They say: "There is no life other than our present worldly life: herein we live and we die, and it is only (the passage of) time that destroys us. Yet the fact is that they know nothing about this and are only conjecturing.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This is, there is no means of knowledge by which they might have known with certainty that after this life there is no other life for man, and that man's soul is not seized by the command of God, but he dies and perishes merely in the course of time. The deniers of the Hereafter say these things not on the basis of any knowledge but on mere conjecture. The maximum that they could say scientifically is: We do not know whether there is any life after death or not; but they cannot say: We know that there is no other life after this life. Likewise, they cannot make the claim of knowing scientifically that man’s soul is not seized by God’s command but he perishes after death just like a watch which suddenly stops functioning. The most they can say is just this: We do not know what exactly happens in either case. Now the question is: When to the extent of the means of human knowledge there is an equal possibility of there being life after death or there being no life after death, and the soul’s being seized by Allah’s command, or man’s dying of himself in the course of time, what is the reason that these people abandon the probability of the possibility of the Hereafter and give their judgment in favor of its denial? Do they have any other reason than this that they, in fact, decide this question on the basis of their desire and not by any argument? As they do not like that there should be any life after death and death should mean total annihilation and not seizure of the soul by Allah’s command, they make their heart’s desire their creed and deny the other probability. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And those who deny future life think aloud the thoughts passing through their minds: "There is only this present life " they say, " we die and as the grass upon the earth shall our posterity be ", then they shall also die and their posterity live, until time does away with life and reduces this world into a useless form and all time shall appear but short time, but indeed as no time". So they think, and with their ignorance of the facts, their action of evidence fails to convince their minds, and their supposition is formed on grounds admittedly insufficient. ### Bijan Moeinian The disbelievers say: "We only live this life; as time goes, by we become old and die. " They have no knowledge about the subject and their saying is merely a guess. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And they say: "There is nothing but our life of this world, we die and we live and nothing destroys us except Ad-Dahr (time).[1] And they have no knowledge of it: they only conjecture. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And they say: "What is there but our life in this world? We shall die and we live, and nothing but time can destroy us." But of that they have no knowledge: they merely conjecture: ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran And they argue, "There is nothing beyond our worldly life. We die; others are born. And nothing destroys us but ˹the passage of˺ time." Yet they have no knowledge ˹in support˺ of this ˹claim˺. They only speculate. ### Taqi Usmani And they say, "There is no life but our worldly life. We die and live, and nothing destroys us except time." They have no knowledge about that; they do nothing but make conjectures. ### Abdul Haleem They say, ‘There is only our life in this world: we die, we live, nothing but time destroys us.’ They have no knowledge of this; they only follow guesswork. Their only argument, ### Arthur John Arberry They say, 'There is nothing but our present life; we die, and we live, and nothing but Time destroys us. ' Of that they have no knowledge; they merely conjecture. ### E. Henry Palmer They say, 'It is only our life in this world, we die and we live, and naught destroys us but time!' But they have no knowledge of this; they do but suspect. ### Hamid S. Aziz And they say, "There is nothing but our life in this world; we live and die and nothing destroys us but time", and they have no knowledge of that; they only conjecture. ### Mahmoud Ghali And they have said, "In no way is there anything except our present life; (Literally: lowly life, i. e., the life of this world) we die and we live, and in no way is there anything that causes us to perish except Time." And in no way do they have any knowledge about that; decidedly they do nothing except surmise. ### George Sale They say, there is no other life, except our present life: We die, and we live; and nothing but time destroyeth us. But they have no knowledge in this matter; they only follow a vain opinion. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And they say: "What is there other than our life in this world? We shall die and we live, and nothing except time can destroy us. " And they have no knowledge of that: They only presume (and imagine): ### Amatul Rahman Omar They say, `We have only this our present life (to live). We (people of one generation) die and we (people of a new generation from among us) come to life again (here in this very world). It is (the passage of) time alone that deals us death. But they have no real knowledge whatsoever about the matter (- the Hereafter). They merely make conjectures. ### Ali Quli Qarai They say, ‘There is nothing but the life of this world: we live and we die, and nothing but time destroys us. ’ But they do not have any knowledge of that, and they only make conjectures. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Dediler ki: "Yaşam dünya hayatından ibarettir! Ölüm, yaşam; hepsi buradadır! Bizi sadece zaman yok eder!" Bu konuda onların hiçbir delilleri yoktur! Ölüyoruz, yaşıyoruz. Bizi o sürekli zamandan başkası helak etmez". Halbuki onların buna dair de hiçbir bilgisi yokdur. Onlar (başka değil) sade (öyle) sanıyorlar. ### İbni Kesir Hayat; ancak bu dünyada yaşadığımızdır. Ölürüz ve yaşarız. Bizi ancak Dehr helak eder, dediler. Oysa onların bu konuda bilgileri yoktur. Başka değil, onlar sadece zannediyorlar. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Onlar hala: "Bu dünyadaki hayatımızdan başka bir şey yok!" derler, "Dünyaya geldiğimiz gibi ölürüz ve bizi ancak zaman yok eder".
