Surah Al-Jathiyah (Crouching) — سورة الجاثية - **Verse:** 10 / 37 · **Juz:** 25 · **Mushaf page:** 498 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-jathiyah/verse-10 ## Arabic مِنْ وَرَٓائِهِمْ جَهَنَّمُۚ وَلَا يُغْن۪ي عَنْهُمْ مَا كَسَبُوا شَيْـٔاً وَلَا مَا اتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللّٰهِ اَوْلِيَٓاءَۚ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظ۪يمٌۜ ## Transcription Min wara-ihim jahannamu walayughnee AAanhum ma kasaboo shay-an wala maittakhathoo min dooni Allahi awliyaa walahumAAathabun AAatheem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Hell is right at their heels. Nothing they have earned will be of any use to them, nor will those they took as protectors besides Allah. They will have a terrible punishment. ### Progressive Muslims Waiting for them is Hell. And that which they earned will not help them, nor those whom they have taken as allies besides God, and for them is a terrible retribution. ### Shabbir Ahmed Ahead of them is Hell, and what they have earned will not avail them, nor will the AWLIA (saints, sufis, imams) whom they had chosen besides Allah. Theirs will be an awesome suffering. (29:24), (79:36), (82:16). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Behind them is Gehenna; and that which they have earned will avail them nothing, nor what they took as allies besides God; and they have a great punishment. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Waiting for them is Hell. And that which they earned will not help them, nor those whom they have taken as allies besides God, and for them is a terrible retribution. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Awaiting them is Gehenna. Their earnings will not help them, nor the idols they had set up beside GOD. They have incurred a terrible retribution. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira There is Hell before them; and whatever they have earned will not avail them in the least, nor those whom they take as friends apart from God. There is great chastisement for them. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Before them is Hell, and what they had earned will not avail them at all nor what they had taken besides Allah as allies. And they will have a great punishment. ### Muhammad Asad Hell is ahead of them; and all that they may have gained [in this world] shall be of no avail whatever to them, and neither shall any of those things which, instead of God, they have come to regard as their protectors: for, awesome suffering awaits them. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Beyond them there is hell, and that which they have earned will naught avail them, nor those whom they have chosen for protecting friends beside Allah. Theirs will be an awful doom. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Hell is behind them.[1] Their worldly earnings shall not avail them, nor those whom they took as protectors instead of Allah.[2] An awesome chastisement lies in store for them. _Footnotes_ - [1] The word wara is used for every such thing as is hidden from man, whether it is before him or behind him. Therefore, another translation can be: They have Hell behind them. In the first case, the meaning would be: They are unconsciously running on this way and have no idea that there is Hell in front of them in which they would fall; in the second case, it would mean: They are engaged in this mischief of theirs, thoughtless of the Hereafter, and they have no idea that Hell is in pursuit of them. - [2] Here, the word wali (guardian) has been used in two meanings: ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Hell awaits them and asserts them as her own and shall beset them on all sides. There and then nothing they earned, accomplished or gained here will be of advantage to them nor will those whom they adopted besides Allah and held in reverence and veneration avail them benefit or afford them help, and they shall suffer grievously. ### Bijan Moeinian The Hell is waiting for such people. The idols that they worship, as well as whatever they have got, can not save them from an awful punishment which is waiting for them. ### Al-Hilali & Khan In front of them there is Hell. And that which they have earned will be of no profit to them, nor (will be of any profit to them) those whom they have taken as Auliyâ’ (protectors, helpers) besides Allâh. And theirs will be a great torment. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali In front of them is Hell: and of no profit to them is anything they may have earned, nor any protectors they may have taken to themselves besides Allah: for them is a tremendous Penalty. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Awaiting them is Hell. Their ˹worldly˺ gains will not be of any benefit to them whatsoever, nor will those protectors they have taken besides Allah. And they will suffer a tremendous punishment. ### Taqi Usmani In front of them, there is Jahannam (Hell). And whatever they have earned will not be of any use to them, nor the patrons they have adopted instead of Allah. And for them, there is a horrible punishment. ### Abdul Haleem Hell lurks behind them and their gains will not benefit them, nor will those beings they took as protectors beside God––a tremendous torment awaits them. ### Arthur John Arberry Behind them Gehenna; and that they have earned shall not avail them aught, nor those they took as protectors, apart from God; for them awaits a mighty chastisement. ### E. The wealth they have acquired shall not avail them, nor shall these (guardians of theirs) whom they have taken for (their) helping friends apart from Allâh (be of any help to them).
