Surah Al-Isra (The Night Journey) — سورة الإسراء - **Verse:** 76 / 111 · **Juz:** 15 · **Mushaf page:** 289 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-isra/verse-76 ## Arabic وَاِنْ كَادُوا لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ مِنَ الْاَرْضِ لِيُخْرِجُوكَ مِنْهَا وَاِذاً لَا يَلْبَثُونَ خِلَافَكَ اِلَّا قَل۪يلاً ## Transcription Wa-in kadoo layastafizzoonaka minaal-ardi liyukhrijooka minha wa-ithan layalbathoona khilafaka illa qaleela ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They were very near to scaring you from the land with the object of expelling you from it. But had they done so they would only have remained there a short time after you. ### Progressive Muslims And they nearly frightened you to drive you out of the land. But in that case, they would have shortly been destroyed after you were gone. ### Shabbir Ahmed Since they saw that they could not persuade you, they wished to drive you out (of Madinah as well. ) If they had done that, (they would have lost the stabilizing force of your presence), and would have annihilated one another in a short while. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And they had almost driven thee out of the land, to turn thee out therefrom; and then would they not have tarried after thee save a little. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And they nearly intimidated you so they could drive you out of the land. And then [when they do], they will not remain [there] after you, except for a little. ### Muhammad Asad And [since they see that they cannot persuade thee, ] they endeavour to estrange thee from the land [of thy birth] with a view to driving thee away from, it-but, then, after thou wilt have left, they themselves will not remain [in it] for more than a little while: ### Marmaduke Pickthall And they indeed wished to scare thee from the land that they might drive thee forth from thence, and then they would have stayed (there) but a little after thee. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They were bent upon uprooting you from this land and driving you away from it. But were they to succeed, they would not be able to remain after you more than a little while.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] This was a clear prophecy which was made at the time when it appeared to be no more than a mere threat, but it was fulfilled literally in a decade or so. A year after the revelation of this Surah, the disbelievers of Makkah compelled the Prophet (peace be upon him) to leave his home. Then within eight years he entered Makkah as a conqueror, and within two years after this, the entire Arabia was totally freed from mushriks. Then whosoever stayed in that country, he remained there as a Muslim and not as a mushrik. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They were resolved to impel you to the feeling of fear to make you resolve to quit the land and depart from Macca. But then they would have been allowed to remain only for a short while to come to the end of their rope wherefore We vanquish them and reduce them into a useless form. ### Bijan Moeinian The disbelievers frightened you so much that you almost decided to flee. If it would have happened (as it happened a year later), they would not have stayed in power for a long time (as it took only eight years that Mohammad triumphantly returned to Mecca and after years everyone embraced Islam.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan And verily they were about to frighten you so much as to drive you out from the land. But in that case they would not have stayed (therein) after you, except for a little while. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Their purpose was to scare thee off the land, in order to expel thee; but in that case they would not have stayed (therein) after thee, except for a little while. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They were about to intimidate you to drive you out of the land ˹of Mecca˺, but then they would not have survived after you ˹had left˺ except for a little while. ### Taqi Usmani And they were likely to harass you in the land, so that they could expel you from there, and in that case, they will have not lived (there) after you, but a little. ### Abdul Haleem They planned to scare you off the land, but they would not have lasted for more than a little while after you. ### Arthur John Arberry Indeed they were near to startling thee from the land, to expel thee from it, and then they would have tarried after thee only a little -- ### E.
