Surah Al-Isra (The Night Journey) — سورة الإسراء - **Verse:** 73 / 111 · **Juz:** 15 · **Mushaf page:** 288 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-isra/verse-73 ## Arabic وَاِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الَّـذ۪ٓي اَوْحَيْنَٓا اِلَيْكَ لِتَفْتَرِيَ عَلَيْنَا غَيْرَهُۗ وَاِذاً لَاتَّخَذُوكَ خَل۪يلاً ## Transcription Wa-in kadoo layaftinoonaka AAani allatheeawhayna ilayka litaftariya AAalayna ghayrahuwa-ithan lattakhathooka khaleela ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They were very near to enticing you away from some of what We have revealed to you, hoping that you would invent something against Us. Then they would have taken you as their intimate. ### Progressive Muslims And they nearly diverted you from what We inspired to you so that you would fabricate something different against Us, and then they would have taken you as a friend! ### Shabbir Ahmed And, behold, they endeavor to tempt you away (O Prophet) from what We reveal to you (and make compromises in return for accepting you as the King of Arabia and a Prophet) if you invented something of their liking (like authorizing the worship of their false deities or taking back the equality of humans) in Our Name. They wanted you to fabricate something else, in order to consider you a friend. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They had almost led you away from what has been revealed to you, that you may invent things about Us besides those revealed, when they would have taken you as friend. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you in order to [make] you invent about Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a friend. ### Muhammad Asad AND,. behold, they [who have gone astray] endeavour to tempt thee away from all [the truth] with which We have inspired thee, [O Prophet,] with a view to making thee invent something else in Our name - in which case they would surely have made thee their friend! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And they indeed strove hard to beguile thee (Muhammad) away from that wherewith We have inspired thee, that thou shouldst invent other than it against Us; and then would they have accepted thee as a friend. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary (O Muhammad), they had all but tempted you away from what We have revealed to you that you may invent something else in Our Name.[1] Had you done so, they would have taken you as their trusted friend. _Footnotes_ - [1] In order to understand the significance of this verse, we should keep in view the circumstances through which the Prophet (peace be upon him) had been passing at Makkah during the preceding decade or so. The disbelievers of Makkah were exerting their utmost to turn the Prophet (peace be upon him) away, somehow or other, from his message of Tauhid, which he was presenting, and to force him to make a compromise with shirk and the customs of ignorance. In order to achieve this end, they tempted him in several ways. They practiced deception upon him, and tempted him with greed, held out threats, and raised a storm of false propaganda against him, and persecuted him and applied economic pressure and social boycott against him. In short, they did all that could be done to defeat his resolve. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab They -the infidels- tried their best to tempt you O Muhammad and incite you to make some concessions. They thought they almost seduced you into a course of action totally undivine. ### Bijan Moeinian They almost succeeded in convincing you to walk away from My Revelations and falsify them in order to gain their friendship. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed (the Qur’ân) unto you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم), to fabricate something other than it against Us, and then they would certainly have taken you a Khalîl (an intimate friend)! ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And their purpose was to tempt thee away from that which We had revealed unto thee, to substitute in our name something quite different; (in that case), behold! they would certainly have made thee (their) friend! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran They definitely ˹thought they˺ were about to lure you away from what We have revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺, hoping that you would attribute something else to Us falsely—and then they would have certainly taken you as a close friend.[1] ### Taqi Usmani (O Prophet,) Surely, they were about to lure you away from what We have revealed to you, so that you forge something else against Us, and in that case they would have certainly made you a bosom friend. ### Abdul Haleem [Prophet], the disbelievers tried to tempt you away from what We revealed to you, so that you would invent some other revelation and attribute it to Us and then they would have taken you as a friend. ### Arthur John Arberry Indeed they were near to seducing thee from that We revealed to thee, that thou mightest forge against Us another, and then they would surely have taken thee as a friend; ### E. Aziz They strove hard to beguile you from what We inspired you with, that you should invent against Us something else, and then they would have taken you for a friend; ### Mahmoud Ghali And decidedly they were indeed almost about to tempt you (The Prophet) from (that) which We have revealed to you, that you might fabricate against Us another, and lo, they would have indeed taken you to themselves a (close) fellow. ### George Sale It wanted little but the unbelievers had tempted thee to swerve from the instructions which We had revealed unto thee, that thou shouldest devise concerning Us a different thing; and then would they have taken thee for their friend: ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Verily, their purpose was to tempt you away from what We had revealed to you, (and) to replace in it (the Quran) something quite different against Us: And then, they would certainly have made you a close friend! ### Amatul Rahman Omar And they had spared nothing in causing you (the severest) affliction with the purpose to turn you away from the revelations given to you, that you might forge in Our name something different from that which We have revealed to you.
