Surah Al-Isra (The Night Journey) — سورة الإسراء - **Verse:** 59 / 111 · **Juz:** 15 · **Mushaf page:** 287 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-isra/verse-59 ## Arabic وَمَا مَنَعَنَٓا اَنْ نُرْسِلَ بِالْاٰيَاتِ اِلَّٓا اَنْ كَذَّبَ بِهَا الْاَوَّلُونَۜ وَاٰتَيْنَا ثَمُودَ النَّاقَةَ مُبْصِرَةً فَظَلَمُوا بِهَاۜ وَمَا نُرْسِلُ بِالْاٰيَاتِ اِلَّا تَخْو۪يفاً ## Transcription Wama manaAAana an nursila bil-ayatiilla an kaththaba biha al-awwaloona waataynathamooda annaqata mubsiratan fathalamoobiha wama nursilu bil-ayatiilla takhweefa ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Nothing has prevented Us sending you Signs except the fact that the previous peoples denied them. We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible Sign, and then they mistreated her. We do not send Signs except to frighten people. ### Progressive Muslims And what stopped Us from sending the signs except that the previous people disbelieved in them. And We sent to Thamud the camel with foresight, but they did her wrong. And We do not send the signs except to make them fearful. ### Shabbir Ahmed Nothing has changed Our Plan to send down this Final Revelation, even though the previous nations have often denied or distorted Our Verses. The most blatant example is of Thamud who violated the clear sign of their submission, and failed the crucial test by killing the she-camel. (7:73), (11:89), (26:141), (27:45). We continued to send Messages for mankind to establish the Order in which peace would replace fear. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And there prevented Us from sending proofs only that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamūd the she-camel as a visible proof, but they wronged her. And We sent to Thamud the camel with foresight, but they did her wrong. And We do not send the signs except to make them fearful. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament What stopped us from sending the miracles is that the previous generations have rejected them. For example, we showed Thamoud the camel, a profound (miracle), but they transgressed against it. We sent the miracles only to instill reverence. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Nothing could stop Us from sending signs except that the earlier people had rejected them as lies. We sent to Thamud the she-camel as a token to make it clear to them, but they treated her cruelly; and We send signs only to deter. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning. ### Muhammad Asad And nothing has prevented Us from sending [this message, like the earlier ones,] with miraculous signs [in its wake], save [Our knowledge] that the people of olden times [only too often] gave the lie to them: thus, We provided for [the tribe of] Thamud the she-camel as a light-giving portent, and they sinned against it. And never did We send those signs for any other purpose than to convey a warning. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Naught hindereth Us from sending portents save that the folk of old denied them. And We gave Thamud the she-camel - a clear portent save to warn. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Nothing hindered Us from sending Our Signs[1] except that the people of olden times rejected them as lies. We publicly sent the she-camel to the Thamud to open their eyes but they wronged her.[2] We never send Our Signs except to cause people to fear.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] Here signs mean those visible miracles which are presented as a proof of Prophethood. The disbelievers from among the Quraish were demanding such signs over and over again. - [2] This is to warn the disbelievers, as if to say: It is the mercy of Allah that He is not showing such a sign so that you might mend your ways but in your folly you presume that such a sign cannot be presented. You should know that a sign is not being sent because its denial inevitably brings chastisement and the community is annihilated. You can learn from the past history that those communities which disbelieved in the open signs were utterly destroyed, such as the people of Thamud. - [3] That is, miracles are not shown for fun. These are meant to warn the people that the Prophet is being helped by the Almighty and that they should realize the terrible consequences of disobedience. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab In fact nothing prevented Us from sending you O Muhammad to the people with the power of working miracles to evince both your mission and Allah's Omnipotence and Rightful Authority except that people of bygone times refused to acknowledge them. Among them were the Thamudites to whom We sent the she –camel- as an evident and undoubted sign, but they mistreated her without due regard and wronged themselves. We only authorize the work of miracles so that the people be moved with a mingled feeling of dread and reverence toward Allah and realize the evil consequence of disobeying or denying Him. ### Bijan Moeinian Nothing can prevent the Lord from sending His miracles (that you are repeatedly asking for) to you. The fact is, the previous nations (such as the people of Pharaoh) denied such miracles (sending miracles, therefore, is not efficient.) I sent the famous camel (as a miracle) to the people of Thamood (for example;) they responded (to this miracle) by killing her! The main reason for sending the (past) miracles was to warn the people (so that they wake up from the hypnotic dream induced by Satan and come to their senses. What was needed in the time of Mohammad was a Book to relay the Lord’s Message to the entire humanity and to the generations to come, with a guarantee that it will never be falsified.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan And nothing stops Us from sending the Ayât (proofs, evidence, signs) but that the people of old denied them. And We sent the she-camel to Thamûd as a clear sign, but they did her wrong. And We sent not the signs except to warn, and to make them afraid (of destruction). ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And We refrain from sending the signs, only because the men of former generations treated them as false: We sent the she-camel to the Thamud to open their eyes, but they treated her wrongfully: We only send the Signs by way of terror (and warning from evil). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Nothing keeps Us from sending the ˹demanded˺ signs except that they had ˹already˺ been denied by earlier peoples. And We gave Thamûd the she-camel as a clear sign, but they wrongfully rejected it.[1] We only send the signs as a warning. ### Taqi Usmani Nothing made us refrain from sending the signs (demanded by the pagans,) except that the earlier people had rejected them. (For example,) We gave Thamūd the she-camel, as an eye-opener, then they did wrong to her, and We do not send signs but as a warning. ### Abdul Haleem Nothing prevents Us from sending miraculous signs, except the fact that previous peoples denied them. Nitekim Semud kavmine gözle görülebilen bir mucize olarak dişi deveyi vermiştik de, onu haksız yere öldürmüşlerdi. Oysa Biz, mucizeleri yalnız korkutmak için göndeririz. ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali Bizi, (Kureyş'in istediği) mucizeleri göndermekten, ancak, öncekilerin onları yalanlamış olması alıkoydu. (Nitekim) Semud kavmine o dişi deveyi açık bir mucize olarak verdik de onlar bu yüzden zalim oldular. Oysa biz mucizeleri sırf korkutmak için göndeririz. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali O istenilen ayetler (mu'cizeler) le risalet vermekten bizi men'eden de yoktur, ancak onları evvelki ümmetler tekzib ettiler, Semude gözleri göre göre o nakayı verdik de onunla kendilerine zulmettiler, halbuki biz o ayetleri ancak korkutmak için göndeririz ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) Bizi mucizelerle peygamber göndermekten alıkoyan şey, ancak önceki milletlerin onları yalanlamış olmalarıdır. Semud'a dişi deveyi görünür (bir mucize) olarak gönderdik; fakat onlar bununla (onu boğazlamakla) zulmetmiş oldular. Oysa biz ayetleri ancak korkutmak için göndeririz. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Bizi (Kureyşe) ayetler (mucizeler) göndermemizden alıkoyan (sebeb başka değil) ancak evvelki (ümmet) lerin onları tekzib etmiş olduklarıdır. Biz, Semuda gözleri göre göre o dişi deveyi verdik de (onu öldürdüler ve) bu yüzden (kendilerine) zulmetdiler. Halbuki bir ayetleri (azab ve ihlak için değil) ancak (ahiret azabından) korkutmak için göndeririz. ### İbni Kesir Bizi ayetlerle göndermekten alıkoyan şey; ancak öncekilerin onları yalanlamış olmalarıdır. Semud'a da gözleri göre göre bir dişi deve vermiştik de, ona zulmetmişlerdi. Halbuki Biz; ayetleri ancak korkutmak için göndeririz. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Bizi (öncekiler gibi, bu mesajı da) mucizevi belirtilerle birlikte göndermekten alıkoyan tek sebep, önceki toplumların onları hep yalanlamış olmalarıdır; nitekim, Semud kavmine uyarıcı, aydınlatıcı bir belirti olarak o dişi deveyi verdik, ama onlar bunu kale almadılar. Oysa biz bu kabil belirtileri yalnızca korkutup uyarmak amacıyla göndermişizdir. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Bizi mucize göndermekten alıkoyan, ancak öncekilerin onları yalanlamış olmalarıdır. Semud kavmine mucize olarak gözleri önündeki Deve'yi vermiştik. Ama ona zulmettiler. Oysa biz mucizeyi sadece korkutmak için göndeririz. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Bizi ayetler (mu'cizeler) göndermekten alıkoyan şey, evvelkilerin, (onları) yalanlamış olmasıdır. Semud(kavmin)e açık bir mu'cize olarak dişi deveyi verdik, o zulmetmelerine sebeb oldu (deveyi boğazlayarak kedilerine yazık etmiş oldular). Biz mu'cizeleri, yalnız korkutmak için göndeririz. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Bizi, mucizeler göstermekten alıkoyan, daha öncekilerin onları yalanlamış olmasından başka bir şey değildir.
