Surah Al-Isra (The Night Journey) — سورة الإسراء - **Verse:** 12 / 111 · **Juz:** 15 · **Mushaf page:** 282 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-isra/verse-12 ## Arabic وَجَعَلْنَا الَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ اٰيَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَٓا اٰيَةَ الَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْـنَٓا اٰيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً لِتَبْتَغُوا فَضْلاً مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَلِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّن۪ينَ وَالْحِسَابَۜ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ فَصَّلْنَاهُ تَفْص۪يلاً ## Transcription WajaAAalna allayla wannaharaayatayni famahawna ayata allayliwajaAAalna ayata annahari mubsiratanlitabtaghoo fadlan min rabbikum walitaAAlamoo AAadada assineenawalhisaba wakulla shay-in fassalnahutafseela ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We made the night and day two Signs. We blotted out the Sign of the night and made the Sign of the day a time for seeing so that you can seek favour from your Lord and will know the number of years and the reckoning of time. We have made all things very clear. ### Progressive Muslims And We made the night and the day as two signs, so We erased the sign of night and We made the sign of day to see-in, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the count. And everything We have detailed completely. ### Shabbir Ahmed (Right and Wrong have been made distinct as day and night. ) We have appointed the Night and the Day as two of Our Signs. The Sign of the Night We have made darkness (of ignorance) while the Sign of the Day we have made brightness (of Guidance). You shall seek the Bounty from your Lord, and be aware of the passing years and make your calendars. (6:97), (10:5). (Reckon every day, month and year to see what you have gained and what you have lost in your self-development). We have expounded most distinctly everything. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail. ### Muhammad Asad And We have established the night and the day as two symbols; and thereupon We have effaced the symbol of night and set up [in its place] the light giving symbol of day, so that you might seek to obtain your Sustainer's bounty and be aware of the passing years and of the reckoning [that is bound to come]. For clearly, most clearly, have We spelt out everything! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And We appoint the night and the day two portents. Then We make dark the portent of the night, and We make the portent of the day sight-giving, that ye may seek bounty from your Lord, and that ye may know the computation of the years, and the reckoning; and everything have We expounded with a clear expounding. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary We have made night and day as two signs. We made the sign of the night devoid of light, and made the sign of the day radiant that you may seek the bounty of your Lord and know the computation of years and numbers. Thus We have expounded everything in detail to keep everything distinct from the other.[1] _Footnotes_ - [1] Allah invites man to study the wisdom that underlies variety in the world and not get confused and long for monotonous uniformity. In fact, the whole system is based on variety, distinctiveness and diversity in things. For the sake of illustration let us take the case of the signs of day and night: You see these opposite things daily in your life. If you just consider the underlying wisdom, you will find that without this variety there would have been hardly any activity in the world. Likewise great wisdom lies in the creation of the people with different temperaments, thoughts and inclinations. If Allah had made all men righteous by birth or annihilated disbelievers and wicked people and left only believers and submissive people in the world, the purpose of men’s creation could not leave been realized. Therefore, it is wrong to desire that there should only be day and no night. The righteous thing is that these people, who have the light of guidance, should exert their utmost to remove the darkness of deviation. It is their duty that if they find darkness like that of night, they should pursue it like the sun so that the light of guidance should reappear. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab We made the night and the day two outward and visible signs of an inward and spiritual grace. We effaced the light from the entity of the night and put it out in obscure darkness to hide things from view. We made the day a visible entity for objects to be perceptible by the sense of sight in order to betake yourselves to Providence, for His bounty, and in order to know the number of the years. Also to reckon the time occupied by the sun in its apparent passage through the signs of the Zodiac and the period of the earth's revolution round the sun forming a natural unit of time and you be able to compute time and determine it by calculation. And everything did We expound and make plain and abounding in detail. ### Bijan Moeinian I offer the night and the day as two miracles of Mine to you. I have prevailed darkness at night and lighted the day so that you may look for your God given blessings. They also are used by you as a mean of calculation and the basis for keeping track of time. Then, We have obliterated the sign of the night (with darkness) while We have made the sign of the day illuminating, that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number of the years and the reckoning. And everything We have expounded with (a distinct) expounding. ### George Sale We have ordained the night and the day for two signs of our power: Afterwards We blot out the sign of the night, and We cause the sign of the day to shine forth, that ye may endeavour to obtain plenty from your Lord by doing your business therein, and that ye may know the number of years, and the computation of time; and every thing necessary have We explained by a perspicuous explication. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And, We have fixed the night and the day as two Signs: The Sign of the night We have hidden away, whereas the Sign of the day, We have made to give you light; So that you may seek the Bounty from your Lord, and that you may know the number (of days) and count of the years: And all things We have fully explained (in detail). ### Amatul Rahman Omar And We have made the night and the day (such as they became) two signs, (in a way that) We obliterated the sign of the night (- darkness of ignorance and disbelief) and We displayed the sign of the day as sight - giving that you may seek the bounty of your Lord and that you may learn (from the alternation of night and day) the computation of years and (the science of) all sorts of counting and measuring. Çünkü gece ve gündüz tıpkı güneş ve ay gibi ayrı birer varlıktırlar(Enbiya 21/33).  Mevsimlerin oluşması nedeniyle Allah'ın ikramını (yağmur, toprak,bitki ve hayvan ilişkisi) arayabiliriz. Çünkü tüm canlılar sudan yaratılmıştır (Enbiya 21/30) ve o suyun dünya üzerindeki çevrimi (buharlaşma, yoğunlaşma, yayılma, temizlenme) mevsimler sayesinde olur. ### Mehmet Okuyan — Kur’an Meal-Tefsir Biz geceyi ve gündüzü iki delil olarak yarattık.
