Surah Al-Insan (Man) — سورة الانسان - **Verse:** 3 / 31 · **Juz:** 29 · **Mushaf page:** 577 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-insan/verse-3 ## Arabic اِنَّا هَدَيْنَاهُ السَّب۪يلَ اِمَّا شَا‌كِراً وَاِمَّا كَفُوراً ## Transcription Inna hadaynahu assabeelaimma shakiran wa-imma kafoora ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley We guided him on the Way, whether he is thankful or unthankful. ### Progressive Muslims We have guided him to the path, either to be thankful or to reject. ### Shabbir Ahmed Verily, We it is Who have shown him the Way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation We guided him on the path, be he grateful or be he ungrateful. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation We have guided him to the path, either to be thankful or to reject. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament We showed him the two paths, then he is either appreciative, or unappreciative. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira We surely showed him the way that he may either be grateful or deny. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful. ### Muhammad Asad Verily, We have shown him the way: [and it rests with him to prove himself] either grateful or ungrateful. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Lo! We have shown him the way, whether he be grateful or disbelieving. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Surely We showed him the Right Path, regardless of whether he chooses to be thankful or unthankful[1] (to his Lord). _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, We did not just leave him to himself after giving him the powers of knowledge and reason, but We also guided him so that he knows which is the path of gratefulness and which of ungratefulness, so that whichever path he chooses in his later life, he himself is responsible for it. In Surah Al-Balad, the same subject has been expressed, thus "And We showed him both the conspicuous ways (of good and evil)." And in Surah Ash-Shams, thus: “By the human self, and by Him Who balanced it (with all the external and internal powers), then inspired it with its wickedness and its piety.” When all these explanations are kept in view, and also those detailed statements of the Quran in which it has been stated what arrangements Allah has made for man’s guidance in the world, it becomes evident that in this verse “We guided him to the way” does not imply any one form of guidance but many forms of it which are limitless and countless. For example: ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab We guided him and conducted him to the right way which We ordained to be the course of life and conduct, and left him to choose to be grateful or to deviate from what is just and right. ### Bijan Moeinian God has showered mankind indiscriminately with His favor, by showing the right path; no matter how grateful or ungrateful man is. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Verily, We showed him the way, whether he be grateful or ungrateful. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali We showed him the Way: whether he be grateful or ungrateful (rests on his will). ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran We already showed them the Way, whether they ˹choose to˺ be grateful or ungrateful. ### Taqi Usmani We have shown him the way to be either grateful or ungrateful. ### Abdul Haleem We guided him to the right path, whether he was grateful or not. ### Arthur John Arberry Surely We guided him upon the way whether he be thankful or unthankful. ### E.
