Such has been the way of those who went before them. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation They believe not in it; and the practice of the former peoples has passed away. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation They do not believe in it, while the way of the earlier generations has gone before. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Consequently, they cannot believe in him. This has been the system since the past generations. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira So, they will not believe in it: The example of former people is there. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) They will not believe in it, while there has already occurred the precedent of the former peoples. ### Muhammad Asad who do not believe in it, although the way which those [evildoers] of olden times had to go has long been within their ken. ### Marmaduke Pickthall They believe not therein, though the example of the men of old hath gone before. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary they do not believe in it.[1] This has been the wont of people of this kind from ancient times. _Footnotes_ - [1] The majority of the translators and commentators are of the opinion that the pronoun "it"( Ayat 12), refers to their mockery, occurring in (Ayat 11), and in “they would not believe in it” in(Ayat 13), refers to the admonition occurring in (Ayat 9). Then (Ayats 12-13) will be rendered like this: “Thus we cause mockery enter into the hearts of the criminals and they do not believe in the admonition”. Though grammatically there is nothing wrong with this version, yet our version of “it” will be better even grammatically. According to this (Ayat 12) will mean, when the admonition enters into the hearts of the believers it gives them peace of mind and comfort of heart.
