Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) — سورة الحج - **Verse:** 47 / 78 · **Juz:** 17 · **Mushaf page:** 337 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-hajj/verse-47 ## Arabic وَيَسْتَعْجِلُونَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ وَلَنْ يُخْلِفَ اللّٰهُ وَعْدَهُۜ وَاِنَّ يَوْماً عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ كَاَلْفِ سَنَةٍ مِمَّا تَعُدُّونَ ## Transcription WayastaAAjiloonaka bilAAathabiwalan yukhlifa Allahu waAAdahu wa-inna yawman AAindarabbika kaalfi sanatin mimma taAAuddoon ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They ask you to hasten the punishment. Allah will not break His promise. A day with your Lord is equivalent to a thousand years in the way you count. ### Progressive Muslims And they seek you to hasten the retribution; and God will not break His promise. And a day with your Lord is like one thousand of the years you count. ### Shabbir Ahmed And so (O Prophet) they challenge you to hasten the doom, but Allah never fails to fulfill His Promise. A day of your Lord is like a thousand of your years. (32:5), (70:40). (Before your Lord, is the eternal Now. And indeed, a day with your Lord is like a thousand years of those which you count. ### Muhammad Asad And [so, O Muhammad,] they challenge thee to hasten the coming upon them of [God’s] chastisement: but God never fails to fulfill His promise - and, behold, in thy Sustainer’s sight a day is like a thousand years of your reckoning. ### Marmaduke Pickthall And they will bid thee hasten on the Doom, and Allah faileth not His promise, but lo! a Day with Allah is as a thousand years of what ye reckon. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They ask you to hasten the punishment.[1] Allah shall most certainly not fail His promise; but a Day with your Lord is as a thousand years of your reckoning.[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] This refers to the oft-repeated challenge by the disbelievers: Well, if you are a true prophet, why does not that chastisement come with which you have been threatening us, for we have been rejecting your claim of being a true Prophet of Allah. - [2] That is, the decisions of Allah do not follow your time and calendar, nor do the consequences of your wrong attitudes appear immediately after the deeds. Therefore it will be very foolish for the part of a people to argue that the threat of punishment was empty just because a decade or a century had passed since they had adopted a wicked attitude and conduct with impurity. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And they -the infidels- ask you O Muhammad to hasten on the promised retributive punishment. But never shall Allah break His promise nor go back on His word. And a day in your Creator's calendar is as a thousand years of your earthly calendar. ### Bijan Moeinian They challenge you as to when God will punish them. God never reneges His promise.
