Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) — سورة الحج - **Verse:** 44 / 78 · **Juz:** 17 · **Mushaf page:** 336 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-hajj/verse-44 ## Arabic وَاَصْحَابُ مَدْيَنَۚ وَكُذِّبَ مُوسٰى فَاَمْلَيْتُ لِلْكَافِر۪ينَ ثُمَّ اَخَذْتُهُمْۚ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَك۪يرِ ## Transcription Waas-habu madyana wakuththibamoosa faamlaytu lilkafireena thumma akhathtuhumfakayfa kana nakeer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley and the companions of Madyan; and Musa was denied as well. I allowed time to the kafirun but then I seized them. How terrible was My denial! ### Progressive Muslims And the dwellers of Median; and Moses was denied. So I granted respite to the rejecters then I took them, how then was My punishment ### Shabbir Ahmed And the dwellers of Midyan. And Moses was also denied (by Egyptians). So I allowed the infidels respite and then seized them. How was My reprobation then! ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And the inhabitants of Madyan. And Moses was denied, so I prolonged enjoyment for the disbelievers; then I seized them, and how [terrible] was My reproach. ### Muhammad Asad and the dwellers of Madyan; and [so, too,] Moses was given the lie [by Pharaoh]. And [in every ease] I gave rein, for a while, to the deniers of the truth: but then I took them to task - and how awesome was My denial [of them,]! ### Marmaduke Pickthall (And) the dwellers in Midian. And Moses was denied; but I indulged the disbelievers a long while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My abhorrence! ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary and so did the dwellers of Midian, and Moses too was branded a liar. Initially I granted respite to the unbelievers for a while and then seized them.[1] How dreadful was My punishment![2] _Footnotes_ - [1] The instances of some peoples who rejected their Prophets have been cited to impress that they were given respite to reform themselves before they were punished. Therefore: O people of Makkah, you should not be deluded by the delay in your punishment. When the term of respite comes to an end, you shall also be punished like the former people, if you do not mend your ways in the meantime. - [2] The Arabic word nakeer is very comprehensive and implies two meanings: ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And those of Madyan and those of as Mussa (Moses). In consequence I granted them respite up to a predetermined point of time, then I cast them down from a position of prosperity and power and brought them to ruin, and how unbearable was the change of disposition and how intolerable was the fitting retribution! ### Bijan Moeinian So did the people of Midyan. Moses was also rejected. I gave ample time to disbelievers and then I called them to account; how terrible was My punishment. ### Al-Hilali & Khan And the dwellers of Madyan (Midian); and belied was Mûsâ (Moses). But I granted respite to the disbelievers for a while, then I seized them, and how (terrible) was My punishment (against their wrong-doing)! ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And the Companions of the Madyan People; and Moses was rejected (in the same way). But I granted respite to the Unbelievers, and (only) after that did I punish them: but how (terrible) was my rejection (of them)! ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran and the residents of Midian. And Moses was denied ˹too˺. But I delayed ˹the fate of˺ the disbelievers ˹until their appointed time˺ then seized them. And how severe was My response! ### Taqi Usmani and the people of Madyan as well. Mūsā was (also) rejected. So, I gave some respite to the disbelievers, then seized them. So how was My censure? ### Abdul Haleem Midian. Moses too was called a liar. I gave the disbelievers time, but in the end I punished them. How I condemned them! ### Arthur John Arberry and the men of Midian; to Moses also they cried lies. And I respited the unbelievers, then I seized them; and how was My horror! ### E. And I granted a long respite unto the unbelievers: But afterwards I chastised them; and how different was the change I made in their condition! ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And the companions of the Madyan people; And Musa (Moses) was rejected (like this). But I gave (some) relief to the disbelievers, and (only) after that I did punish them: But how (terrible) was My rejection (of them)! ### Amatul Rahman Omar And the inhabitants of Midian. And Moses (also) was cried lies to. But I granted respite the disbelievers for long, then I took them to task. (Imagine) how (terrible) was (the result of their) denial of Me! and how (awful) the change I effected (in them). ### Ali Quli Qarai and the inhabitants of Midian, and Moses was also impugned. Nasılmış benim inkarım? ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim (42-43-44) Eğer (kafirler) seni tekzib ediyorlarsa onlardan evvel Nuuh kavmi, Aad, Semuud (kavmleri), İbrahim kavmi, Lut kavmi ve Medyen Yaranı da (peygamberlerini) tekzib etmişlerdir.
