Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) — سورة الحج - **Verse:** 39 / 78 · **Juz:** 17 · **Mushaf page:** 336 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-hajj/verse-39 ## Arabic اُذِنَ لِلَّذ۪ينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِاَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُواۜ وَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَد۪يرٌۙ ## Transcription Othina lillatheena yuqataloonabi-annahum thulimoo wa-inna Allaha AAalanasrihim laqadeer ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Permission to fight is given to those who are fought against because they have been wronged – truly Allah has the power to come to their support – ### Progressive Muslims It is permitted for those who have been persecuted to fight. And God is able to give them victory. ### Shabbir Ahmed Permission to fight is granted to those against whom war is wrongfully waged. And Allah is indeed Most Powerful for their aid. ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation Leave is given those who are fought because they were wronged: — and God is able to help them — ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Permission has been given to those who are being fought - for they have been wronged. And God is able to give them victory. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Permission is granted to those who are being persecuted, since injustice has befallen them, and GOD is certainly able to support them. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Permission is granted those (to take up arms) who fight because they were oppressed. God is certainly able to give help to those ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory. ### Muhammad Asad PERMISSION [to fight] is given to those against whom war is being wrongfully waged and, verily, God has indeed the power to succour them -: ### Marmaduke Pickthall Sanction is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory; ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Permission (to fight) has been granted to those for they have been wronged.[1] Verily Allah has the power to help them:[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] This (verse 39) is the first verse of the Quran in which permission to tight was given in the month of Zil-Hajj in the first year after Hijrah according to our research. Then the command to fight was given in (verse 190, 191, 193, 216 and 244 of Surah Al-Baqarah) in Rajab or Shaban of A.H. 2. - [2] "Allah surely has Power over giving them victory": this assurance was urgently needed by the persecuted Muslims whose fighting strength at that time was very meager, not even a thousand including all the migrants and the Muslims of Al-Madinah. On the other hand, the fighting strength of the Quraish by themselves was much greater. Besides, they had all the other mushrik clans of Arabia at their back and were joined later by the Jews as well. Therefore, this assurance was most opportune and the challenge to the disbelievers was very significant, for it meant to say that they were not fighting against a small number of the Muslims but against Allah. Therefore, “You are welcome to fight if you dare”. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Those who have been attacked by the infidels who waged war against them for their belief in Allah are permitted to fight in defense of the wrong inflicted on them; Allah is indeed Qadirun (Omnipotent) enough to afford them help. ### Bijan Moeinian Thus, permission (to fight and defend themselves) to those who have been subject to an injustice and God certainly is capable of helping them. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Permission to fight (against disbelievers) is given to those (believers) who are fought against, because they have been wronged; and surely, Allâh is Able to give them (believers) victory - ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged;- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid;- ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Permission ˹to fight back˺ is ˹hereby˺ granted to those being fought, for they have been wronged.[1] And Allah is truly Most Capable of helping them ˹prevail˺. ### Taqi Usmani Permission (to fight) is given to those against whom fighting is launched, because they have been wronged, and Allah is powerful to give them victory. ### Abdul Haleem Those who have been attacked are permitted to take up arms because they have been wronged- God has the power to help them- ### Arthur John Arberry Leave is given to those who fight because they were wronged -- surely God is able to help them -- ### E. Henry Palmer Permission is given to those who fight because they have been wronged, - and, verily, God to help them has the might,- ### Hamid S. Aziz Verily, Allah will defend those who are true; verily, Allah loves not any treacherous ingrate (or traitor and ingrate). ### Mahmoud Ghali The ones who are (forced to) fight are permitted (to defend themselves) for that they are unjustly (attacked); and surely Allah is indeed Ever- Determiner over giving them victory. ### George Sale Permission is granted unto those who take arms against the unbelievers, for that they have been unjustly persecuted by them: -- (and God is certainly able to assist them): ### Syed Vickar Ahamed Permission (to fight) is given to those believers against whom war is made, because they (the righteous) have been wronged— And surely, Allah is Most Powerful (Khad’ir) for their help and (He) grants them the victory; ### Amatul Rahman Omar Permission (to fight in self-defense) is (now) given to those (Muslims) against whom war is waged (for no reason), because they have been done injustice to, and Allâh has indeed might and power to help them; ### Ali Quli Qarai Those who are fought against are permitted [to fight] because they have been wronged, and Allah is indeed able to help them. ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali İzin verildi o kendilerine kıtal edilenlere, çünkü onlara zulm olundu ve şübhesiz ki Allah onları muzaffer kılmağa her halde kadirdir ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Kendileri ile savaşılan kimselere, (savaş için) izin verilmiştir. . . Zulme uğradıkları içindir bu! Şübhesiz ki Allah onlara yardım etmiye elbette kemaliyle kaadirdir. ### İbni Kesir Zulmedildikleri için savaşanlara izin verildi. Allah, onlara yardım etmeye elbette Kadir'dir. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Kendilerine haksız yere saldırılan kimselere (savaşma) izni verilmiştir -ve şüphesiz Allah onlara yardım ulaştıracak güçtedir-: ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Zulme uğrayan kimselere savaşmaları için izin verildi. Allah, onlara yardım etmeye elbette kadirdir. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Kendileriyle savaşılan(mü'min)lere (karşı koyma) izn(i) verildi. Çünkü onlara zulmedilmiştir ve şüphesiz Allah, onlara yardım etmeğe kadirdir. ### Yaşar Nuri Öztürk — Kur'an-ı Kerim Meali Kendilerine savaş açılanlara savaşma izni verilmiştir. Çünkü onlar zulme uğratıldılar.
