Surah Al-Hajj (The Pilgrimage) — سورة الحج - **Verse:** 38 / 78 · **Juz:** 17 · **Mushaf page:** 335 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-hajj/verse-38 ## Arabic اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يُدَافِـعُ عَنِ الَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُواۜ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يُحِبُّ كُلَّ خَوَّانٍ كَفُورٍ۟ ## Transcription Inna Allaha yudafiAAu AAaniallatheena amanoo inna Allaha la yuhibbukulla khawwanin kafoor ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Allah will defend those who have iman. Allah does not love any thankless traitor. ### Progressive Muslims God defends those who believe. God does not like any betrayer, rejecter. ### Shabbir Ahmed Verily, Allah will defend the community of true believers. Behold, Allah does not love those who betray the Divine System ordained in this Book and thus show ingratitude for the magnificent Guidance they have received. (Hence, His Promise to defend will not apply to such people). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation God defends those who heed warning; God loves not every treacherous ingrate. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation Goddefends those who believe. Surely God does not like the traitors who deny the truth. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful. ### Muhammad Asad Verily, God will ward off [all evil] from those who attain to faith; [and,] verily, God does not love anyone who betrays his trust and is bereft of gratitude. ### Marmaduke Pickthall Lo! Allah defendeth those who are true. Lo! Allah loveth not each treacherous ingrate. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Surely[1] Allah defends those who believe.[2] Certainly Allah has no love for the perfidious, the thankless.[3] _Footnotes_ - [1] From here the address for the first time prepares the Muslims for Jihad. In order to understand this, we should keep in view the preceding portion (verses 19-24) in which the ideological conflict between the two parties (believers and disbelievers) and the result thereof have been described. This naturally serves as a prelude to the armed conflict between the two parties. That is why in (verses 26- 37) the immediate causes which necessitated war have been stated to serve as an introduction and justification for war with the disbelievers of Makkah. - [2] After the migration to Al-Madinah, when the first Hajj season approached, it naturally brought along with it anguish and anger both for the Muhajirs and the Ansar, who had been debarred froth visiting Makkah and performing Hajj, That is why, in this passage (verse 26-37), the rituals and the objects of Hajj have been described to bring home to the disbelievers that they had no right to debar anyone from Hajj. On the other hand, the Muslims are being prepared to fight not with the intention of wreaking vengeance but for the sake of reform. At the same time sacrifice on the occasion of Hajj has been prescribed as a permanent rite to enable them (and the Muslims of the whole world) to commemorate Hajj and the rites connected with it, so that they might refrain from wreaking vengeance on the people of Makkah for the persecution to which they had been subjected. They have, therefore, been enjoined to fight to bring about better conditions and not to take revenge on their persecutors. - [3] The Arabic word mudafiat implies two things. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Indeed, Allah defends those whose hearts are imprinted with the image of religious and spiritual virtues whereas He simply detests the dishonest, the unfaithful and the treacherous given to infidelity and ingratitude. ### Bijan Moeinian God will defend those who have chosen to believe for the simple reason that He does not like the treacherous unappreciative people. ### Al-Hilali & Khan Truly, Allâh defends those who believe. Verily, Allâh likes not any treacherous ingrate to Allâh [those who disobey Allâh but obey Shaitân (Satan)]. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali Verily Allah will defend (from ill) those who believe: verily, Allah loveth not any that is a traitor to faith, or show ingratitude. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran Indeed, Allah defends those who believe. Surely Allah does not like whoever is deceitful, ungrateful. ### Taqi Usmani Surely, Allah defends those who believe. Allah does not love any treacherous, ungrateful. ### Abdul Haleem God will defend the believers; God does not love the unfaithful or the ungrateful. ### Arthur John Arberry Assuredly God will defend those who believe; surely God loves not any ungrateful traitor. ### E. Aziz Their meat will never reach to Allah, nor yet their blood, but the piety from you will reach Him. Gerçekten Tanrı hain ve (pek) kafir olan kimseyi sevmez. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Şübhesiz ki Allah (müşriklerin ezasını) iman edenlerden defedecekdir. Çünkü Allah hıyanetkar ve nankör olan herkesi sevmez. ### İbni Kesir Muhakkak ki Allah; iman edenleri savunur. Muhakkak ki Allah; hainleri ve nankörleri sevmez. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı ki, Allah inananları (bütün kötülüklere karşı) mutlaka koruyacaktır; çünkü, Allah, hangi türden olursa olsun, hainleri ve nankörleri asla sevmez. ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Şüphesiz Allah, iman edenleri savunur ve hiç bir hain kafiri sevmez. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Allah inananları savunur.
