Surah Al-Hadid (The Iron) — سورة الحديد - **Verse:** 19 / 29 · **Juz:** 27 · **Mushaf page:** 539 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-hadid/verse-19 ## Arabic وَالَّذ۪ينَ اٰمَنُوا بِاللّٰهِ وَرُسُلِـه۪ٓ اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الصِّدّ۪يقُونَۗ وَالشُّهَدَٓاءُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْۜ لَهُمْ اَجْرُهُمْ وَنُورُهُمْۜ وَالَّذ۪ينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِاٰيَاتِنَٓا اُو۬لٰٓئِكَ اَصْحَابُ الْجَح۪يمِ۟ ## Transcription Wallatheena amanoo billahiwarusulihi ola-ika humu assiddeeqoona washshuhadaoAAinda rabbihim lahum ajruhum wanooruhum wallatheenakafaroo wakaththaboo bi-ayatina ola-ikaas-habu aljaheem ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley Those who have iman in Allah and His Messengers – such people are the truly sincere – and the martyrs who are with their Lord will receive their wages and their light. But those who are kafir and deny Our Signs, will be Companions of the Blazing Fire. ### Progressive Muslims And those who believed in God and His messengers are the truthful ones. And the martyrs at their Lord will have their reward and their light. As for those who disbelieved and rejected Our revelations, they are the dwellers of Hell. ### Shabbir Ahmed For, those who (thus) believe in Allah and His Messengers, it is they - they who are indeed true, and they who are the witnesses to (the Glory of) their Lord. For them is their reward and their light. But, those who openly reject Our Messages and those who deny them in practice - it is they who will be companions of the Insurmountable Barrier (that bars their "Self" from developing). ### Sam Gerrans — The Qur'an: A Complete Revelation And those who believe in God and His messengers: it is they who are the men of truth and the witnesses in the sight of their Lord — they have their reward, and their light. But those who ignore warning and deny Our proofs: those are the companions of Hell. ### The Monotheist Group — The Quran: A Monotheist Translation And those who believed in God and His messengers are the truthful ones. And the martyrs at their Lord will have their reward and their light. As for those who disbelieved and denied Our revelations, they are the dwellers of Hell. ### Rashad Khalifa — The Final Testament Those who believed in GOD and His messengers are the saints and martyrs. Reserved for them at their Lord are their rewards and their light. As for those who disbelieved and rejected our revelations, they have incurred Hell. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira Those who believe in God and His apostles are true of word and deed; and by their Lord are considered testifiers of the truth. They have their guerdon and their light. As for those who do not believe and reject Our revelations, are the people of Hell. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) And those who have believed in Allah and His messengers - those are [in the ranks of] the supporters of truth and the martyrs, with their Lord. For them is their reward and their light. But those who have disbelieved and denied Our verses - those are the companions of Hellfire. ### Muhammad Asad For, they who have attained to faith in God and His Apostle - it is they, they who uphold the truth, and they who bear witness [thereto] before God: [and so] they shall have their reward and their light! But as for those who are bent on denying the truth and on giving the lie to Our messages - it is they who are destined for the blazing fire! ### Marmaduke Pickthall And those who believe in Allah and His messengers, they are the loyal, and the martyrs are with their Lord; they have their reward and their light; while as for those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, they are owners of hell-fire. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary In Allah's sight only those who truly believe in Allah and His Messengers[1] are utterly truthful[2] and true bearers of witness(for the sake of Allah).[3] For them is their reward and their light.[4] As for those who gave the lie to Our Signs, they are the people of Hell. _Footnotes_ - [1] Here, the believers imply those people of true faith whose attitude and conduct was absolutely different from that of the people of weak faith and the false claimants to Islam, and who were at that time vying with one another in making monetary sacrifices and were struggling with their lives in the cause of the true faith. - [2] Siddiq (most truthful) is the superlative from sidq; however, one should clearly understand that sidq is not merely a statement conforming to the truth, but a statement which is not only true in itself but its speaker also upholds it as a truth sincerely. For instance, if a person says that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is Allah’s Messenger, this is by itself precisely according to the truth, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) is truly Allah’s Messenger, but the person would be true in his statement only if he also believed and upheld him as Allah’s Messenger. Therefore, a thing would be sidq if what was said was in conformity with the truth as well as with the speaker’s own conscience. Likewise, sidq also contains the sense of faithfulness, sincerity and practical righteousness. Sadiq-ul-waad would be the person who kept his promise practically, who never broke it. Sadiq (true friend) would be he who did full justice to friendship in the time of need, and who never proved faithless to anybody in any way. In war, sadiq-fil-qital (true soldier) would be the one who fought with all his heart and body and established his valor practically. Thus, sidq in essence implies that one’s deed should fully conform to his word. The one who acts contrary to his word cannot be sadiq. On that very basis, the one who preaches one thing and acts contrary to it is regarded as a false preacher. With this meaning of sidq and sadiq in view one can fully appreciate the meaning of the superlative sadiq. It would inevitably imply a righteous person who is free from every impurity, who has never swerved from the truth and piety, who could never be expected to say anything against his conscience. Who believed in whatever he believed with full sincerity and remained faithful to it under all circumstances, and who has practically proved that he is a true believer in the full sense of the word. (For further explanation, see (E.N. 99 of Surah An-Nisa). - [3] The early commentators have differed about the explanation of this verse. Ibn Abbas, Masruq, Dahhak, Muqatil bin Hayyan and others say that the previous sentence ended with humsssiddiqun; and wash-shuhadauinda Rabbihim la-hum ajru-hum wa nuru-hum is a separate and independent sentence According to this explanation, the translation of the sentence would be: Those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger, are indeed the most truthful (as siddiqun); as for the true witnesses (ash-shuhada), they will have their reward and their light from their Lord. Contrary to this, Mujahid and several other commentators regard this whole expression as one sentence. According to them the translation would be that which we have given in the text above. The two commentaries differ because the first group has taken the word shahid in the meaning of the martyr in the way of Allah and seeing that every believer is not a shahid in this sense, has taken wash-shuhadau inda Rabbi-him as a separate sentence. But the other group takes shahid in the meaning of the witness of the truth, and not in the sense of the martyr, and in this sense every believer is a shahid. We are of the opinion that this second commentary is preferable and this is; - [4] And thus We have made you a middle nation that you may be witnesses against mankind, and the messenger may be a witness against you. (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 143). ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And those whose breasts have been filled with reverential. awe and their hearts with the image of religious and spiritual virtues and their deeds with wisdom and piety on the ground of their sincere belief in Allah and His Messenger and the promotion Of their purpose, are they who are titled with the dignified rank of the "pure", the "veracious". Then come the pious who carried the banners of truth at odds and have acquired the glorious privilege of "Martyrs" through resisting to blood with their spiritual armour. Both of them are they who have been destined to enjoy such designations in the heavens realm There await them a meritorious reward and light emanating from Allah's countenance to glow in their faces and proceed ahead of them But those who denied Allah and refused to recognize His revelations are those who shall make their abode in hell. ### Bijan Moeinian Those who have believed in God and His Prophets are the ones who have truthfully believed in truth. As the true witnesses, they will receive their light [the energy which will give them enough power to fly to Heaven] and a great reward (paradise.) ### Al-Hilali & Khan And those who believe in (the Oneness of) Allâh and His Messengers - they are the Siddiqûn (i.e. those followers of the Prophets who were first and foremost to believe in them), and the martyrs with their Lord, they shall have their reward and their light. But those who disbelieve (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and deny Our Ayât (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) - they shall be the dwellers of the blazing Fire. ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali And those who believe in Allah and His messengers- they are the Sincere (lovers of Truth), and the witnesses (who testify), in the eyes of their Lord: They shall have their Reward and their Light. But those who reject Allah and deny Our Signs,- they are the Companions of Hell-Fire. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran ˹As for˺ those who believe in Allah and His messengers, it is they who are ˹truly˺ the people of truth. And the martyrs, with their Lord, will have their reward and their light. But ˹as for˺ those who disbelieve and reject Our signs, it is they who will be the residents of the Hellfire. ### Taqi Usmani And those who believed in Allah and His messengers, - those are the Siddīqs (the most righteous after prophets) and the Shuhadā’ (martyrs) in the sight of your Lord. For them shall be their reward and their light. As for those who disbelieved and rejected Our verses, they are the inmates of Hell. ### Abdul Haleem Those who believe in God and His messengers are the truthful ones who will bear witness before their Lord: they will have their reward and their light. But those who disbelieve and deny Our revelations are the inhabitants of Hell. ### Arthur John Arberry And those who believe in God and His Messengers -- they are the just men and the martyrs in their Lord's sight; they have their wage, and their light. But the unbelievers, who have cried lies to Our signs, they are the inhabitants of Hell. ### E. Henry Palmer And those who believe in God and His Apostle, they are the confessors and the martyrs with their Lord; for them is their hire and their light! But those who misbelieve and call our signs lies, they are the fellows of hell! ### Hamid S. Aziz And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers, these it is that are the truthful and the faithful ones in the sight of their Lord: they shall have their reward and their light, and as for those who disbelieve and reject Our revelations, these are the inmates of Hell. ### Mahmoud Ghali And the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messengers, those are they who are the most sincere; and the martyr-witnesses in the Providence of their Lord will have their reward and their light. And the ones who have disbelieved and cried lies to Our signs, those will be the companions (i.e., inhabitants) of Hell-Fire. ### George Sale And they who believe in God and his apostles, these are the men of veracity, and the witnesses in the presence of their Lord: They shall have their reward, and their light. But as to those who believe not, and accuse our signs of falsehood, they shall be the companions of hell. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed And those who believe in Allah and His messengers— They are the sincere (caretakers of Truth), and the witnesses (who testify), in the eyes of their Lord: They shall have their reward and their light. But those who reject Allah and deny Our Signs (verses), they are the companions of Hell-Fire. ### Amatul Rahman Omar And for those who believe in Allâh and His Messengers they alone are the truthful people and faithful witnesses in the sight of their Lord, they will have their full reward and their light. But those who disbelieve and cry lies to Our commandments are the very inmates of Hell. ### Ali Quli Qarai Those who have faith in Allah and His apostles —it is they who are the truthful and the witnesses with their Lord; they shall have their reward and their light. But as for those who are faithless and deny Our signs, they shall be the inmates of hell. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü Esma'sıyla hakikatleri olan Allah'a ve Rasulüne iman edenlere gelince, işte onlar sıddıkların ve Rablerinin indinde şehidlerin (Al-u İmran: 18'de belirtilen şehadet; halk anlayışına göre şehit değil. Onlara, onların mükafatları ve nurları vardır. Ayetlerimizi yalan diyenlere gelince, işte onların tümü cehennemin adamlarıdır. ### Gültekin Onan Tanrı'ya ve O'nun Resulü'ne inananlar; işte onlar rableri katında sıddıklar ve şehidler (veya şahid)lerdir. Onların ecirleri ve nurları vardır. Küfredip ayetlerimizi yalanlayanlar ise; işte onlar da cehennem halkıdır. ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim Allaha ve peygamberlerine iman edenler (yok mu?) Onlar sözü özü doğru olanlar, Allah için şahidlik edenlerdir. Onların hem mükafatları, hem nuurları vardır. Küfredenler (e), ayetlerimizi yalan sayanlar (a gelince:) Onlar da cehennemin yaranıdırlar. ### İbni Kesir Allah'a ve peygamberlerine iman edenler; işte onlar, Rabbları katında doğrular ve şahidlerdir. Küfredip de ayetlerimizi yalanlayanlara gelince; onlar da cehennem yaranıdırlar. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı Allah'a ve Elçisi'ne inananlar, işte onlardır hakikate sahip çıkan ve Allah'ın huzurunda (ona) tanıklık edenler. (Böylece) onlar ödüllerini ve nurlarını elde edecekler.
