Surah Al-Hadid (The Iron) — سورة الحديد - **Verse:** 14 / 29 · **Juz:** 27 · **Mushaf page:** 538 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-hadid/verse-14 ## Arabic يُنَادُونَهُمْ اَلَمْ نَكُنْ مَعَكُمْۜ قَالُوا بَلٰى وَلٰكِنَّكُمْ فَـتَنْتُمْ اَنْفُسَكُمْ وَتَرَبَّصْتُمْ وَارْتَبْتُمْ وَغَرَّتْكُمُ الْاَمَانِيُّ حَتّٰى جَٓاءَ اَمْرُ اللّٰهِ وَغَرَّكُمْ بِاللّٰهِ الْغَرُورُ ## Transcription Yunadoonahum alam nakun maAAakum qaloobala walakinnakum fatantum anfusakum watarabbastumwartabtum wagharratkumu al-amaniyyu hattajaa amru Allahi wagharrakum billahialgharoor ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They will call out to them, ‘Were we not with you?’ They will reply, ‘Indeed you were. But you made trouble for yourselves and hung back and and doubted and false hopes deluded you until Allah’s command arrived. The Deluder deluded you about Allah. ### Progressive Muslims They will call upon them: "Were we not with you" They will reply: "Yes, but you led yourselves into temptation, and you hesitated, and doubted, and became misled by wishful thinking, until God's judgment came. You were diverted from God by arrogance." ### Shabbir Ahmed They will cry unto them, "Were we not with you?" The believers will answer, "Yes, verily - but you let your "Self" succumb to temptation. And you tempted one another, hesitated (watching which side was prevailing), and doubted (Allah's promise). And your fantasies misled you until there issued the Command of Allah. And indeed, the deceiver deceived you concerning Allah. They will reply: "Yes, but you led yourselves into temptation, and you hesitated, and doubted, and became misled by wishful thinking, until the judgment of God came. They will answer, "Yes, but you cheated your souls, hesitated, doubted, and became misled by wishful thinking, until GOD's judgment came. You were diverted from GOD by illusions. ### Mohamed Ahmed - Samira They will call to them: "Were we not with you?" They will answer: "Certainly; but then you let yourselves be tempted, and waited in expectation but were suspicious and were deceived by vain desires, till the decree of God came to pass, and the deceiver duped you in respect of God. ### Sahih International — (Umm Muhammad, Mary Kennedy, Amatullah Bantley) The hypocrites will call to the believers, "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes, but you afflicted yourselves and awaited [misfortune for us] and doubted, and wishful thinking deluded you until there came the command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah . ### Muhammad Asad They [who will remain without] will call out to those [within], "Were we not with you?" - [to which] the others will answer: “So it was! But you allowed yourselves to succumb to temptation, and you were hesitant [in your faith], and you were doubtful [of resurrection]; and your wishful thinking beguiled you until God’s command came to pass: for, [indeed, your own] deceptive thoughts about God deluded you ### Marmaduke Pickthall They will cry unto them (saying): Were we not with you? They will say: Yea, verily; but ye tempted one another, and hesitated, and doubted, and vain desires beguiled you till the ordinance of Allah came to pass; and the deceiver deceived you concerning Allah; ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary The hypocrites will call out to the believers: "Were we not with you?"[1] The believers will reply: “Yes; but you allowed yourselves to succumb to temptations,[2] and you wavered[3] and you remained in doubt[4] and false expectations deluded you until Allah's command came to pass,[5] and the Deluder[6] deluded you concerning Allah. _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, did we not live with you together in the same Muslim society? Did we not affirm the faith? Did we not offer the Prayers along with you and observe the Fast and perform the Hajj and pay the Zakat? Did we not sit with you in your assemblies and were we not bound in marriage ties and kinship with you? Then, how is it that we have been separated from you today? - [2] That is, in spite of your claim to be Muslims, you never believed like true and sincere Muslims and remained suspended between belief and unbelief. You still had your interests attached to disbelief and the disbelievers and you never gave yourselves up wholly to Islam. - [3] Tarabbus (from which tarabbastum of the text is derived) means to wait and tarry for an opportunity. When a person is unable to decide which of the two alternative ways he should choose but stands and waits to consider which way should be more favorable for him to follow, he is involved in tarabbus. The hypocrites had adopted the same attitude during the critical time of the conflict between Islam and un-Islam. Neither were they siding with disbelief openly nor were spending their energy to support and help Islam with full conviction. They were sitting on the fence, waiting to see which party in the conflict became dominant, so that if it was Islam they may join it on the basis of their affirmation of the faith, and if it was unbelief they may side with its supporters taking advantage of their neutral position in the conflict. - [4] This implies different kinds of doubts that a hypocrite suffers from, and the same also are the actual causes of his hypocrisy. He doubts the existence of God, the Prophethood of the Prophet, the Quran’s being Allah’s book, the Hereafter, its accountability, and its rewards and punishments, and he doubts whether the conflict between the truth and falsehood is real, or a mere delusion; as for himself he considers the only truth to be that one should enjoy life and its pleasures to the full. For unless a person is involved in such doubts he can never be a hypocrite. - [5] This can have two meanings: - [6] (1) Until death came to him, you could not shed this delusion till the last moment. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab Then they -the hypocrites- call out to those who are blessed and say to them: "Had we not been together Here and Hereafter and together we attended assemblies of prayers and pilgrimage and together we fought". Indeed we were together, say the virtuous "but you counseled deaf and you closed your hearts' ears and your minds' eyes and did not keep back from the forbidden. You were illuded with the false hopes that gratifying your appetite was something instinctively felt to be right and fair, and with Satanic deceit you had forgotten calling Allah to mind." ### Bijan Moeinian They will cry out to the believers: "Were we not with you [in all religious activities]?" The believers will reply:… ### Al-Hilali & Khan (The hypocrites) will call the believers: "Were we not with you?" The believers will reply: "Yes! But you led yourselves into temptations, you looked forward for our destruction; you doubted (in Faith) and you were deceived by false desires, till the Command of Allâh came to pass. And the chief deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect of Allâh." ### Abdullah Yusuf Ali (Those without) will call out, "Were we not with you?" (The others) will reply, "True! but ye led yourselves into temptation; ye looked forward (to our ruin); ye doubted (Allah's Promise); and (your false) desires deceived you; until there issued the Command of Allah. And the Deceiver deceived you in respect of Allah. ### Mustafa Khattab — The Clear Quran The tormented will cry out to those graced, "Were we not with you?" They will reply, “Yes ˹you were˺. But you chose to be tempted ˹by hypocrisy˺, ˹eagerly˺ awaited ˹our demise˺, doubted ˹the truth˺, and were deluded by false hopes until Allah’s decree ˹of your death˺ came to pass. And ˹so˺ the Chief Deceiver[1] deceived you about Allah. ### Taqi Usmani They (the hypocrites) will call out to them (the believers), "Were we not with you?" They will say, “Yes, (you were,) but you led your souls to a wrong way, and kept waiting (for an evil end to the Muslims), and remained in doubt, and were deluded by fancies, until Allah’s command came to pass, and you were deceived about Allah by the Big Deceiver (Iblīs). ### Abdul Haleem The hypocrites will call out to the believers, ‘Were we not with you?’ They will reply, ‘Yes. But you allowed yourselves to be tempted, you were hesitant, doubtful, deceived by false hopes until God’s command came- the Deceiver tricked you about God. ### Arthur John Arberry They shall be calling unto them, 'Were we not with you?' They shall say, 'Yes indeed; but you tempted yourselves, and you awaited, and you were in doubt, and fancies deluded you, until God's commandment came, and the Deluder deluded you concerning God. ### E. Henry Palmer They shall cry out to them, 'We were not with you!' they shall say, 'Yea, but ye did tempt yourselves, and did wait, and did doubt; and your vain hopes beguiled you; and the beguiler beguiled you about God. ### Hamid S. Aziz They will cry unto them, "Were we not with you?" They shall say, "Yea! But you caused yourselves to fall into temptation, and you waited and doubted, and vain desires deceived you till the ordinance (punishment) of Allah came, while the Arch-deceiver deceived you about Allah. " ### Mahmoud Ghali They will be calling out to them, "Were we not with you?" They will say, "Yes indeed, but you tempted yourselves, and you awaited, and you were suspicious, and fancies deluded you until the Command of Allah came, and the Deluder deluded you concerning Allah. ### George Sale The hypocrites shall call out unto the true believers, saying, were we not with you? They shall answer, yea; but ye seduced your own souls by your hypocrisy: And ye waited our ruin; and ye doubted concerning the faith; and your wishes deceived you, until the decree of God came, and ye died: And the deceiver deceived you concerning God. ### Syed Vickar Ahamed (Those hypocrites outside) will call the believers, "Were we not with you?" (The others) will reply, "True! But you led yourselves into temptation; You looked forward (to our destruction); And you doubted (Allah’s Promise); And (your false) desires deceived you; Until the Command of Allah became true. And the Deceiver (Satan) deceived you in respect to (Almighty) Allah. ### Amatul Rahman Omar These (hypocrites) will call out to these (believers), `Were we not with you (in the worldly life)?' They will reply, `Yes, but you let yourselves fall into temptations and you waited (uselessly for our destruction), and you doubted (about the truth). Infact, your vain desires deceived you till the decree of Allâh (about your punishment) came to be implemented. And the arch-deceiver deceived you in respect of Allâh. ### Ali Quli Qarai They will call out to them, ‘Did we not use to be with you?’ They will say, ‘Yes! But you cast yourselves into temptation, and you awaited and were doubtful, and [false] hopes deceived you until the edict of Allah arrived, and the Deceiver deceived you concerning Allah. ### Ahmed Hulusi — Türkçe Kur'an Çözümü (İkiyüzlüler) onlara (iman edenlere): "Sizinle beraber değil miydik?" diye seslenirler. "Evet ama siz, Allah'ın emri (ölüm) gelesiye kadarki süreçte, nefslerinizi fitneye düşürdünüz (imanı yaşamadınız), gözetleyip durdunuz, şüphe ettiniz, kuruntular da sizi aldattı ve o çok aldatıcı da (bilincinizdeki şartlanmışlık fikirleri) Allah'la (siz O'ndan var oldunuz ne yapsanız bir şey olmaz size, kuruntusuyla) sizi aldattı!" ### Ali Bulaç — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Türkçe Anlamı (Münafıklar) Onlara seslenirler: "Biz sizlerle birlikte değil miydik?" Derler ki: "Evet, ancak siz kendinizi fitneye düşürdünüz, (müslümanları acıların ve yıkımların sarmasını) gözetip beklediniz, (Allah'a ve İslam'a karşı) kuşkulara kapıldınız. Sizleri kuruntular yanıltıp aldattı. Sonunda Allah'ın emri (olan ölüm) geliverdi; ve o aldaltıcı da sizi Allah ile (Allah'ın adını kullanarak, hatta masumca sizden görünerek) aldatmış oldu." ### Bayraktar Bayraklı — Yeni Bir Anlayışın Işığında Kur'an Meali Münafıklar müminlere, "Biz sizinle beraber değil miydik?" diye seslenirler. Müminler derler ki: "Evet, ama siz kendi başınızı belaya soktunuz, gözlediniz, şüpheye düştünüz ve kuruntular sizi aldattı. Şeytan, Allah ile sizi aldattı. Nihayet Allah'ın emri geldi çattı." ### Diyanet İşleri — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Meali (Münafıklar) mü'minlere şöyle seslenirler: "Biz de (dünyada) sizinle beraber değil miydik?" (Mü'minler de) derler ki: "Evet, fakat siz kendinizi yaktınız. Başımıza musibetler gelmesini gözlediniz, şüphe ettiniz. Allah'ın emri gelinceye kadar kuruntular sizi aldattı. O çok aldatıcı (şeytan) Allah hakkında da sizi aldattı." ### Elmalılı Hamdi Yazır — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali Onlara şöyle bağırışırlar: Bizler sizinle beraber değil miydik? Evet, derler: Ve lakin sizler kendilerinize fitne yaptınız, gözettiniz, işkillendiniz, o kuruntular sizi aldattı, ta Allahın emri gelinciye kadar, hem sizi Allaha mağrurlandırdı o aldatıcı mağrur. ### Elmalılı (sadeleştirilmiş) (Münafıklar) onlara şöyle bağrışırlar: "Bizler sizinle beraber değil miydik?" (Mü'minler): "Evet, ama siz kendilerinizi fitneye soktunuz, gözettiniz, şüpheye düştünüz ve Allah'ın emri gelinceye kadar kuruntular sizi aldattı. O aldatıcı şeytan sizi (günahın zararı yoktur diye) Allah'a güvendirdi. ### Gültekin Onan (Münafıklar) Onlara seslenirler: "Biz sizlerle birlikte değil miydik?" Derler ki: "Evet, ancak siz kendinizi fitneye düşürdünüz, (müslümanları acıların ve yıkımların sarmasını) gözetip beklediniz, (Tanrı'ya ve İslama karşı) kuşkulara kapıldınız. Sizleri kuruntular yanıltıp aldattı. Sonunda Tanrı'nın buyruğu geliverdi; ve o aldaltıcı da sizi Tanrı ile aldatmış oldu." ### Hasan Basri Çantay — Kur'an-ı Hakim ve Meal-i Kerim (Münafıklar) onlara bağrışırlar: "Biz sizinle beraber değil miydik"? "Evet, dediler (derler, beraberdik). Fakat kendinizi siz kendiniz yakdınız. (Hep mü'minlerin felaketini) gözetdiniz. (İslam dini hakkında) şübhe etdiniz. Sizi kuruntular aldatdı. Sizi o çok aldatan, Allaha karşı bile aldatdı". Nihayet (işte) Allahın emri gelib çatdı. ### İbni Kesir Onlara: Biz sizinle beraber değil miydik? diye seslenirler. Onlar da: Evet, ama siz kendinizi aldattınız, pusu kurdunuz, şüpheye düştünüz ve kuruntular sizi aldattı. O çok aldatan, sizi Allah'a karşı bile aldattı. Nihayet Allah'ın emri gelip çattı. ### Muhammed Esed — Kur'an Mesajı O(nun dışında kala)nlar, şu (içindeki)lere, "Sizinle değil miydik?" diye seslenecekler. Berikiler, "Evet öyleydi!" diye cevap verecekler, "Ama siz kendi kendinizi ayarttınız, (inancınızda) tereddüt gösterdiniz; (yeniden dirilme konusunda) şüpheye kapıldınız ve Allah'ın buyruğu ulaşıncaya kadar kuruntunuz sizi yoldan çıkardı çünkü, Allah hakkındaki ayartıcı düşünceler(iniz) sizi yanılgıya sürükledi! ### Şaban Piriş — Kur'an-ı Kerim Türkçe Anlamı Münafıklar, müminlere: -Sizinle beraber değil miydik? diye seslenecekler. -Evet, ama, siz kendinizi aldattınız. Çekinceli davrandınız, şüphe ettiniz ve Allah'ın emri gelinceye kadar kuruntular sizi aldattı. Aldatıcı da sizi Allah ile aldattı, derler. ### Süleyman Ateş — Kur'an-ı Kerim ve Yüce Meali (Münafıklar) onlara seslenirler: "Biz de sizinle beraber değil miydik?" (Mü'minler) derler ki: "Evet ama, siz kendi canlarınıza kötülük ettiniz, beklediniz (hemen tevbe etmediniz) kuşkulandınız, kuruntular sizi aldattı.
