Surah Al-Furqan (The Criterion) — سورة الفرقان - **Verse:** 7 / 77 · **Juz:** 18 · **Mushaf page:** 359 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-furqan/verse-7 ## Arabic وَقَالُوا مَالِ هٰذَا الرَّسُولِ يَأْكُلُ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْش۪ي فِي الْاَسْوَاقِۜ لَوْلَٓا اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فَيَكُونَ مَعَهُ نَذ۪يراًۙ ## Transcription Waqaloo mali hatha arrasooliya/kulu attaAAama wayamshee fee al-aswaqilawla onzila ilayhi malakun fayakoona maAAahu natheera ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley They say, ‘What is the matter with this Messenger, that he eats food and walks in the market-place? Why has an angel not been sent down to him so that it can be a warner along with him? ### Progressive Muslims And they said: "What is with this messenger that he eats the food and walks in the market places If only an Angel were sent down to him so that he would jointly be a warner. " ### Shabbir Ahmed Yet they say, "What sort of Messenger is this who eats food and goes about in the market-places? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner? ### Muhammad Asad Yet they say: What sort of apostle is this [man] who eats food [like all other mortals] and goes about in the market places? Why has not an angel [visibly] been sent down unto him, to act as a warner together with him?" ### Marmaduke Pickthall And they say: What aileth this messenger (of Allah) that he eateth food and walketh in the markets? Why is not an angel sent down unto him, to be a warner with him. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary They say: "What sort of a Messenger is this: he eats food and walks about in the markets?[1] Why was an angel not sent down to him so that he may remain with the Messenger and warn those that do not believe in him?[2] _Footnotes_ - [1] That is, he cannot be a Messenger of Allah because he is a human being like us. Had Allah willed to send a Messenger, He would have sent an angel, and if at all a human being was to be sent, he should have been a king or a millionaire, who would have resided in a castle and been guarded by attendants. A Messenger could not be an ordinary person who has to move about in the market places like the common people, for it is obvious that such a human Messenger cannot attract the attention of the people. In other words, they thought that a Messenger was not meant to guide the people to the right path but to coerce them to obedience by show of worldly power and grandeur. For details, see (E.N. 26 of Surah Al-Mominoon). - [2] That is, if a human being was to be sent as a Messenger, an angel should have been appointed to accompany him to proclaim: If you do not believe in him, I will scourge you. But what kind of a Messenger is he, who has to suffer from abuse and persecution? ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab And they foolishly say: "What kind of a Messenger is this who eats food and moves about and comes and goes from place to place on foot!" "if only an angel be sent down to accompany him and share his duty and help him accomplish his purpose of warning people against infidelity. " ### Bijan Moeinian And they say: "What kind of Prophet is Mohammad who eats and goes to the market like all of us? Why has not an Angle been sent down with him to make people at awe as a helper in his mission?" ### Al-Hilali & Khan And they say: "Why does this Messenger (Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) eat food, and walk about in the markets (as we).
