Surah Al-Furqan (The Criterion) — سورة الفرقان - **Verse:** 42 / 77 · **Juz:** 19 · **Mushaf page:** 362 - **Source:** https://quran.so/surah-al-furqan/verse-42 ## Arabic اِنْ كَادَ لَيُضِلُّنَا عَنْ اٰلِهَتِنَا لَوْلَٓا اَنْ صَبَرْنَا عَلَيْهَاۜ وَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ ح۪ينَ يَرَوْنَ الْعَذَابَ مَنْ اَضَلُّ سَب۪يلاً ## Transcription In kada layudillunaAAan alihatina lawla an sabarnaAAalayha wasawfa yaAAlamoona heena yarawna alAAathabaman adallu sabeela ## Translations ### Aisha Bewley He might almost have misled us from our gods had we not stuck to them steadfastly!’ They will soon know, when they see the punishment, whose way is the most misguided. ### Progressive Muslims "He nearly diverted us from our gods had we not been patient for them. But in time, when they see the suffering [that awaits them], they will come to know who it was that went farthest astray from the path [of truth]! ### Marmaduke Pickthall He would have led us far away from our gods if we had not been staunch to them. They will know, when they behold the doom, who is more astray as to the road. ### Abul A'la Maududi — Tafhim commentary Had we not firmly persevered in our devotion to them[1] (he had almost) led us astray from our gods." But soon, when they see the chastisement, they will come to know who had strayed too far from the Right Way. _Footnotes_ - [1] Obviously there is a contradiction between the question posed by the disbelievers and the assertion made by them about their deities. The question was meant to bring the Prophet (peace be upon him) into contempt, as if to say: You are making a claim that is far above your low position. On the other hand, their assertion shows that they indirectly admitted the force of the arguments and the high character of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and were even afraid of the effectiveness and success of his message, because, according to them, it was going to turn them away from their false gods. ### Abdel Khalek Himmat — Al- Muntakhab "He almost succeeded", they add, "in influencing our thoughts against our gods and he nearly made us err and our sober wishes almost learned to stray, had it not been for our firmness and constancy". But on the day they are confronted with the torment laid upon the damned they shall then realize who had been lost in the blind mazes of entangled wood. ### Bijan Moeinian They will continue: "He almost succeeded in misleading us.
